How many other dakkanauts are suffering from this? As most of you have read from me, I work for a mobile company. I live in CT, and I was on the road. No flights, I'm stuck rental carring it home. But roads are closed with travel bans in effect, so I'm kinda holing it up in Hagerstown, Md until the storm clears. Anyone else having storm issues? Be safe, hopefully everyone stocked up on bread, peanut butter and bottled water!!

I fething hate the Weather Channel for naming winter storms and making it a thing.
One type of storm gets a name. Hurricanes (or the tropical equivalent throughout the world).

And politicans blaming it on "Changing Climate".

It's the north east...
It's winter...
It's cold...
And yet, they act like they haven't seen a snowstorm.

So there what like 2 feet of snow expected... whats the big deal sounds like a weekly thing up here lol. But after watching the news I expect atleast 30+ americans to die.... for reason?
Here is how to survive guys:
1: Buy a blanket
2: shut windows and doors
3: wrap in blanket and watch tv
4: once tv and power is off go to sleep
5: if still no power after a week and out of water boil snow.
6: you can go a month + with no food and a week + so have a blanket and shut your doors and move on.
Worse days of my life couple years ago -42 degrees with 3-4 feet of snow on the roads and weist deep in the lawn and drive way. Took me 5 hours to shovel my driveway. Went sleding then shot a deer. power was out for 2 weeks and had to stoke the fire in the barn to keep the house warm... and well 9 months later had another kid.

I mean, that sounds somewhat reasonable, but please understand, this might affect New Yorkers.

A little late but I would recommend to anyone to pick up one of those indoor propane lights for the house. One of them doesn't produce enough gas to kill ya makes warmth and light. the tanks cost 15$ and can burn for 12+ hours. But I might have been taught different then most lol. I was taught if stuck in the car and you know your stuck first thing first rip the seats apart and place the foam over the windows and the fabric in the trim of the doors. find any and all paper in the car and stuff your jacket. If you will be there for even longer you can get water by placing a wire between the battery pos/neg to create a spark and heat to burn things to get water ect ect lol. Oh and if food starts to go bad bury it in snow it like a fridge but out side :O

The issue is more like there's actual population along the eastern seaboard.
I don't know which advice to New Yorkers is most funny, conceptually speaking -- go hole up in your barn, go shoot a deer for food, or go boil urban snow to drink. Should someone tell him that gak is grey at its cleanest?

Shooting the deer wasn't for food it was for fun, the barn is not a hold up it is where I stoke the second fire for the kids to go to the barn to play, if it between dyeing from having no water and drinking grey snow and you choose death well.... darwin has a award for that, btw you can filter most bacteria by using a filter or even a bra and once boiled all contagions will be pretty much gone.

I thought New Yorkers could bad-ass their way through anything?
When moving to big cities, people should remember that when it comes to emergencies, there is nearly nothing positive about being in a city, especially in the winter for any place that has a decent winter. Hell, even the emergency care that is supposed to be "just around the corner" in the city has to be able to navigate the traffic or snow-filled roads to get to you, and most of the cities in the US have horrendously outdated infrastructures for utilities.
Plus, it's a storm, not a child. Snowstorm #76593 in a northern climate doesn't need a freaking name.

Thanks for the sympathy, all!
This is actually supposed to be the worst storm to ever hit NY. Not in the past 5 or 10 years...but ever. Since we started keeping track, anyway. It's bad enough that NY, CT, NJ and parts of MA have issued travel bans and such. 50mph wind mixed with heavy snowfall, visibility is completely gone.
And to be fair, yes, there are a ton of DR and PR natives. Most of my company is made up of such members of the Hispanic race.

That's the catch. Ten thousand years ago, New Yorks was at the bottom of a glacier.
Out here in California, we're three and a half years into the worst drought in recorded history, but if you go back in time, about a thousand years ago California suffered through like two hundred straight years of drought, and sixty million years ago California was at the bottom of the ocean.
Just some fun little factoids, since I'm not sure on the exact dates. I could be off a few million years .

I feel sorry for travelers caught out in the bad weather, stay safe.
For everyone else who lives in northern America, remember that winter is a thing and it's generally a good idea to have supplies on hand in case of emergency. Enough to get through a few days of heavy snow at least.
As much as cable news likes to sensationalize things and make it look like old man winter is launching surprise terrorist attacks on New York every January, it is what happens at this time of year and it's not difficult to make sure you've got a few extra cans of soup and a warm blanket ahead of time.

This storm is annoying me. They keep saying we're getting hammered, but they times keep getting pushed back. Juno is one of the dragons from Game of Thrones. You know it's coming, but no one knows when, but you wish it would hurry the hell up so you know if you can skip work tomorrow or not.

My wife's work already shut down tomorrow and Wednesday. My school has done the same. Only about 4" here so far but it's supposed to ramp up hard around midnight. Should be fun, stocked up at 9am and avoided all the mayhem that is Pre-storm shopping ;p
If buffalo can handle 75" of snow in a single storm 2 months ago I think we'll be fine ;p

I'm in RI and we're getting a hefty hit from it. I took the dog out for a roll in the snow for a while before coming back in. It really wok get bad until 5/6 am here, so at least most people should have power through the night.
My house has a coal burning stove, so it stays warm here.
No school is good, so I can get some painting done. But my station is in the basement, so if we lose power....

Makes me really glad I'm back in Kentucky for the time being.
Good luck guys, we would love to help, but I'm fairly convinced Kentucky only has 5 snowplows in the entire state. Not to mention we normally run out of salt after the first couple of dustings because snow scares the gak out of us.

They up to 5 plows now? If someone see two snowflakes falling at the same time, they call it a blizzard and immediately drive into a ditch. Then close the state. Winter preparedness was never something I could count on when I lived in Louisville. I much prefer the winter snows to the muggy summers now that I’m back north though.
Here upstate there is no sign of the storm. I was supposed to wake up to over a foot, if the doomsayers were to be believed.
