My club is about 90% casual players, or at least have personal limits, and that is where I was having fun with 40k before emigrating. With a like minded person, competitive or casual, you can still have fun with 40k, but I strongly bemoan the loss of the ability to "cross contaminate" so to speak, and how not all casual armies are created equally; ever try a foot marine list against a 25 psychic dice CSM army, or Daemons; could be super fluffy, won't be any fun.
And that's the damning point with 40k for me; it's still capable of being fun, there's good ideas in there, but when there are so many obstacles in the way of having fun, and how you have to play it "right" for your area, rather than how you prefer, that's far from ideal. In 5th, my super-sub-optimal Blood Ravens army, which was a total love letter to the DoW games, could fight my friend's "Grey Knights" army (re:inquisition with one squad of GKT and Draigo) and while I wouldn't often win, I at least felt I was contributing, versus now where my 1st Company Minotaurs don't inflict a single casualty versus Wraithdar before being tabled by the start of turn 3.
It fragments the community, and a fragmented community takes away the diversity which is 40k's most enjoyable component. I always have fun playing the local Tyranid, Dark Eldar, Ork and most CSM and SM armies, but I don't enjoy the fact I can't fight Eldar or Daemons at all, can only play against very specific Tau lists without getting tabled. Casual or no, bad core rules and completely imbalanced codexes are a damning sin.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

When I get a game, it's almost always good.
But, players are dwindling.

This is very much my experience as well.

I always have more fun casually then competitively. There is less complaining about balance, and everyone seems to have a better time overall.

40k is the hobby I spend the most time on, and have the most fun with.
It has problems. Boy, does it have problems. But the positives outweigh them enough that I keep spending an inordinate amount of time and money on it... and don't feel too bad about that.
A particular draw to me is the robust 40k community. I like my 40k friends, and the community is energetic and non-toxic compared to a lot of other gaming communities.

This. Few games have sucked me in like 40k

I've been playing very casually for the last few years. I tried to start playing at a local club - but the guys I played there had a different idea of what casual was to my own.
I plan on sticking to playing with my friend. Whenever we've played it's been great fun. My main problem is that he is far more competitive than me, so he gets annoyed when a rule doesn't go his way (but is happy to exploit any that will gain him an advantage!). I know to expect that now, so I try to work around it.

Casual games are great. No cheese, or spamming bs. This is why local store is fun and tournaments are rage-inducing.

I get stuck running the tournaments which is a totally thankless job, so a lot more of my games have been "casual" the last few months. And i have a great time.
now if I can just pawn if off onto some poor power hungry sod who doesn't know better, I'd get more competitive games in. And those are fun too.
