lol! My opponents reasoning that he told me at the beginning of the match is that he wanted to show people how unfun the game has become... he might have succeeded.

Game 2 Posted up to Mid-Game! This game was brutal and hard to enjoy. My opponent was from norway i think and seemed pretty nice and that was possibly the only upside to having to play against this list. I wasnt really expecting him to camp back and just template me to death.

Will post the rest of the report Friday or Saturday. Feel free to comment on how you would play the game out next.

I hate people like that and I'm about as competitive as it gets. "I want to show people how Unfun this is because I'm a complete tool and winning means more than anything" is really what he should have said. If you walk upto a table at a tournament with that list and say "it's strong" I have infinitely more respect for that statement. i probably would have gone into argumentative mode after that statement and made his game as unfun as possible so many kudos for keeping a cool head.

Often in doing that you would find that you are not enjoying the game either. I really like challenges so I kind of took it as a chance to overcome the obstacle. Its kind of like beating one of your buddies when he tailored a list to beat you. Your not really expecting to win but if you do then you earn those bragging rights.

Dozer Blades wrote:So true ! Saying you want to show how unfun the game can be is a total copout.

The one good thing is his army was nicely painted. As for the pre-game comment... I found it be painfully truthful. The first couple of turns were about as fun as staff duty if you have heard of it.

Chancetragedy wrote:Yah just makes no sense to me. Just come out and say "I want to win and I think it's strong" there is literally nothing wrong with that if your at a tournament.

But TK if adepticon had not ruled that gauss can't break through a void shield generator would you have taken the doomscythes? My friends are convinced their crap but I still think they can be useful.

The doom scythes are the real reason I was still in this game. They dropped a knight practically by them selves and nearly killed off the lynx. I will give a more complete assessment at the end of the report but I was very happy that I included them. They add the mobility and the deep range threat that the army kind of lacks. I can come in from any portion on my table edge and get an angle on a hidden enemy.

Alas, Game 2 is finished. Enjoy!

Fair enough. I just find myself having very little respect with people who are so disingenuous like that.

Your fine, such is this game we know and love.

Sorry for the delay gents. I feel like I keep having to say that of late but the battle reports are the first to go when I get busy. On top of that I just volunteered to run a campaign at the FLGS. I am looking forward to running the campaign but I understand it will be a lot of time and work for the greater good. Speaking of the greater good. Lets start up game three.

My opponents army will be nicknamed: For the Greater Fluff!

Farsight Enclaves:

HQ:
Command Farsight

Elite:
Riptide (Earth Caste Pilot Array, EWO, Heavy Burst Cannon, Twin-linked SMS)
Riptide (EWO, Ion Accelerator, Twin-Linked Plasa Rifle)

Troops:
Crisis Suit (Missile Pod; Plasma Rifle)
Crisis Suit (Missile Pod; Plasma Rifle)
Crisis Suit (Missile Pod; Plasma Rifle)
3 x Crisis Suit (2x Fusion w/ Target Lock, 2x Fusion w/ Target Lock, Missile Pod/Plasma RIfle)

Hive Fleet Detachment:

HQ:
Flyrant (Grubs; 2x TL Devourer; Wings)
Flyrant (Grubs; 2x TL Devourer; Wings)

Troops:
Mucolid
Mucolid
3x Ripper Swarm

Formation Detachment:

Skytyrant swarm:
Gargoyle Brood x 10
Gargoyle Brood x 10
Hive Tyrant (Lash Whip and Bonesword, The Ymgarl Factor, TL Devourer, Wings)

Mission:
Maelstrom of War: Each player generates 1 tactical objective at the start of his first turn. If, at the start of his turn, a player had fewer than 3 active tactical objectives, he must generate new tactical objectives until he has a total of 3. You score victory points for achieving Tactical Objectives at the end of your turn. Each player may discard 1 Tactical Objective at the end of his turn.

Deployment: Hammer and Anvil

Initiative: For the Greater Fluff!

Pre-Game Analysis:
Spoiler:
Alright so this army pains me to see. I have kind of become a fluff guy over the years and I am having trouble envisioning Tau teaming up with tyranids to take down Necrons. The mission is back to maelstrom which is nice. However, he has the mobility to take and hold objectives with 5 objective secure troops. His list is actually built pretty well for the mission with the crisis suits being excellent for maelstrom. I will need to kill them as soon as they come into the game. The crisis suits are there to score his points while the tyranids move around and kill off my army. My target priority must be on point throughout this game or I might find myself easily out of the running. I am already behind on the leader boards and I really need to max points in this game to stay alive. However that is easier said then done. He has the potential to really hurt me turn one as the harvest formation has to go a shooting phase without RP.

Deployment:

He places all of the crisis suits in reserves as expected. I reserve my unit of 3 tomb blades. He places his riptides on the right flank away from the nids. Even without RP I boldly deploy the wraiths directly across from them. I need the riptides silenced before my doom scythes come in. If not then I risk losing them from the start and I really need them to take down the hive tyrants. He deploys both hive tyrants on the right flank and I deploy both units of tomb blades to meet him. I hide zahndrekh in the middle behind the ruin along with the spyder and the scarabs.

I fail to seize so it is For the Greater Fluff's Turn! Sadly I failed to take any additional pictures of this game. I am not sure why this happened but will try and be more vigilant in the future. Sometimes when games get really close I focus more on the game and forget to take the pictures. I needed to play a flawless game in this one or I was going to have a disappointing finish. I made some bold statements the night before to some friends the night before about my confidence in my list. I said practically anyone could make the finals with my list. They spent the lunch break rubbing karma in my face. So I am a little motivated to redeem myself going into this game.

Combined Turn 1:
Spoiler:

My opponent is about to begin moving but I remind him that we should roll mysterious objectives first as it could effect movements. We roll mysterious objectives. The 2 on my side are -1 charge range and..... SKYFIRE Nexus! He moves up both flyrants despite the skyfire nexus. They had to the center of my lines in flight. His riptides both nova charge and fire into the wraiths along with one of the flyrants. I lose one wraith and another takes a wound. The skytyrant swarms begins moving up the middle 12". His psychic phase is relatively uneventful as he rolls low for dice and only gets on spell off that I mange to deny.

My tomb blades move up to maximise the skyfire objective. Between both units of tomb blades and the ghost ark I manage to kill a Flyrant outright. The harvest formation always takes RP. The wraiths move the max distance towards his riptides and then I manage to get the 10" charge to lock the Heavy Burst Cannon Riptide into combat. I roll poorly and only manage one wound. The ghost ark on the right flank starts to shoot at his Skytyrant formation and takes full advantage of majority toughness T3. The spyder spawns another scarab swarm which sits up top for the BLOS and 4+ cover.
I also manage to score my objective and take first blood. I am in great shape early in this one.

Combined Turn 2:
Spoiler:

He gets the fusion team with farsight in from reserves and a solo suit. He shoots the fusion team at the ghost arks splitting fire. He rolls poorly and I make some jinks. He only manages a glance on the right flank ghost ark but the left one explodes killing one warrior. The Flyrant moves off to the left flank and shoots the smaller unit of tomb blades and fires a warp blast into the ghost ark but fails to hit. He also gets a ripper swarm in that deep strikes on his far back right objective. Along with a mucolid which deep strikes on the middle objective. His Skytyrant formation avoids the riptides to avoid the rolls for one eye open. The remaining riptide moves back a little but is stuck on the side of the table thanks to the skytyrant advancing in the middle. The skytyrant formation attempts an 11" charge on my ghost ark but it fails. My opponent draws poorly on objectives again but manages I think 1 VP. My tomb blades make their leadership as I lost two of them. The wraiths manage another 2 wounds on the riptide and remained locked in combat.

I bring in a doom scythe in from reserves. The doom scythe moves to target his flyrant or the farsight squad. I spawn another scarab swarm and move them out to fight the skytyrant formation. The ghost ark on the right flank moves to fire at the skytyrant formation and the solo suit. I fire my tomb blades into the flyrant which I believe periled at this point. I manage 2 wounds and it falls to the ground for its final wound. The 9 warriors that are in the open move into the middle ruin and dakka his skytyrant formation as well. Even with look out sirs the hive tyrant is taking wounds as it is now up front. The doom scythe fires into his farsight squad but the death ray scatters off some and only manages two and then i fail to wound with one. I manage to instant kill one and kill another with tesla. Zahndrekh and his immortals fire into them and manage a few wounds on farsight. I at least killed the 2 fusion blaster suits. Lastly the scarabs charge into the skytyrant formation. He kills 2 bases but they stick and I manage 2 wounds on the squad. The wraith combat is still locked with the riptide.

Combined Turn 3:
Spoiler:

His last two solo suits come in. He deepstrikes one by his back objective but it scatters and he lands next to the mucolid and they both roll ones for looking at eachother and doing nothing. His riptide on the right flank moves towards the center finally as he tries to control some objectives and to get away from the wraith combat that is gradually coming to a close. Farsight and his remaining suit shoot at the last ghost ark and then assault it. Despite having armorbane farsight only manages one pen and only gets a shaken result. The wraiths and the riptide combat finally ends with the wraiths finishing the kill and consolidating towards the center.

The last night scythe comes in and targets the middle riptide. Zahndrekh and his squad kill off farsight and his friend. The other suit is killed off by dakka from the ghost ark. The small unit of tomb blades comes in and helps kill off the solo suit as well. The now 5 man squad of tomb blades turbo's to his side to hold an objective. The larger unit of tomb blades kill his solo suit that deep striked into the center. The spyder moves up to join the scarabs and spawn another. One doom scythe cannot get a shot on his riptide so it moves to kill off his ripper swarm in his backfield. The wraiths move to the center and charge a wounded riptide and finish it off. At this point we call the game as the only thing remaining is one mucolid and decreasing skytyrant formation. Not to mention the points are heavily in my favor.

Post Game Analysis and Results:
Spoiler:
Necrons: 30 VP
For the Greater Fluff: 0 VP

Analysis: That game went extremely well. Getting the skyfire nexus was a huge buff and an easy solution for his flyrants. My opponent advancing his riptides along with the rest of his forces was imo a tactical error on his part. Despite taking some casualties I should not have been able to charge them turn 1. That was another early victory for me. Once I locked up the riptide I was pretty confident I could pull this one out. It just seemed like everything went my way in this one. I wonder how the game would of went had I not got the favorable side and the skyfire nexus. My opponent was a great sport throughout the game despite the game getting lop sided early. I would not mind playing him again sometime even if I loathe CTA allies. This game brings me up to 60 of 90 total battle points. I am now in the thick of it for a possible qualification for the day two finals... pending I have a decent win in my next match.

Nope. Simply nope. I would rage, and rage hard. I would rule that my guys would never have to take leadership checks because they're robots. I would rule that the Tau would cower and run away before taking casualties and run home for their greater good. It has JUST AS MUCH justification as their BS ruling.

I've been trawling through dakka for the last 2 hours, and this is officially the thing that has made me the most upset...

Oh EMPEROR HELP US if the gun I use hurts the thing you have in a sci fi wargame.

Might as well rule that a plasma cannon can't hurt freshly deepstruck raptors because that would be unfair.

I think you'll find that the latter is actually backed a lot more by fluff than the former. Robots with command protocols which remove their free will are probably not too bothered by fear. Especially considering that most necrons minds have degraded to the point that they're basically devoid of higher thought. That and the fact that they most likely don't even feel pain makes a strong case for all necrons automatically passing leadership tests. Arnold never dropped his nuts.

For that matter, shouldn't 'crons be immune to a hell of a lot of psychic powers, being soulless living metal constructs and all?

Adepticon's rulings on the void shield were probably the worst made this year.

Yes my opponent wasnt rolling that great for his saves. The Flyrants should have survived a little more dakka then they did. It also helped that all 3 hive tyrants failed to get Catalyst for the FNP boost. That would of been great for his Skytyrant formation.

I have to agree with you in this one. Fortunately for me there were not that many at the event. I expected a lot of them given the ruling and their ability to null an armies shooting phase. Hopefully other events make their own separate ruling on the void shield generator.
