I have a 3500pt GK army that cost me about $900 to assemble.

It would cost me about $3000 to replace at current prices, though (none of the models in it were bought new at retail. Most were bought 2nd and 3rd hand, cleaned up and repainted.).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

About $700 for my Orks. Not sure how many points. Guessing 2,000+.

Aside: how do people tally up their points anyhow? Just base unit cost? WYSIWYG?

Base cost + Major WYSIWYG such as meltaguns, power fists, HB sponsons etc.

Son of a Runherder. Look what you made me do. OK, I started counting up my models. *drumroll* 3500 POINTS OF ORKS! And I don't own any Dakkajets, Battlewagons, Gorkanauts, or Stompas. I had no idea. Stupid eBay.
I keep pretty good records, and near as I can tell, that $700 includes all the models, rulebooks, codexes, paint and supplies I've bought since I got into this hobby. Not too shabby.

Lot's of hobbies tend to become very expensive over time. I've been interested in this but had to wait till I was ready. I know what expenses I'm getting into and will be jumping into this with both feet running. Although any game I ever get into will require me to travel, but it's actually not too big an issue since my sisters each live in cities where people play this. One of them being Ottawa which I know has plenty gamers (lived there for a couple yrs). My costs will always have to include a growing travel expense.
It's already cost me hundreds in paints and books and now the model collecting will begin. Ironically due to my isolated location, GW's free delivery makes shopping from their online site cheaper then all but best of deals out there.

To add a further big dent in the future, I'm actually considering buying all the Imperial game boards and scenery and doing a major Orky conversion project with it.

This sounds actually really neat. You can call it "looted Imperial City"

I'm just going to focus on my Steel Legion for this. I normally play 1250pts so that comes to about $500 with some FW. All together with a couple things free and some other stuff traded for its around $1800. Just one army, and I have many more...

And my other hobby is not any better. My Steyr AUG cost more than my Steel Legion lol.

Less than $550 for about 2500 points of Necrons. Obviously not including a case, paints, brushes and other aesthetics. The grand total is probably right above $700

This hobby has cost less than all my other pursuits over the years, yet yields far more satisfaction.
It's results have longevity and something tangible. I never got that from PC gaming, fishing, golf or drinking/partying. I enjoyed them for a time, but mini wargaming has outlasted them all.

In saying that, I don't want to tally my Nidz or DA, but my recent 2000 points of Orks were a mix of 2nd hand and new. All up cost me $1060 (saved about $1200).

As others have said, it's all relative to what you consider expensive or value for money.

A few examples of hobbies that I've played in the past but since cut down on because of time & money... my kingdom for more time & money

2x top end cricket bats per season. That could be £500+, then add in other equipment, travel etc and you're soon close to £1k per year

5aside football. 3 games per week @£5 a game. That's around £750 per year. Yes it has health benefits but I can't resell my financial investment if I need/want to at a later date.

Annual golf membership £1k+, then add in new equipment every couple of years, that's probably another £400+ each year.

If you consider classic cars, high end computer gaming(PC more so than console), holidays/traveling and other items as hobbies then 40k begins to look like quite a cheap option

I'm not sure what my 4.5k of Eldar are worth but at least I can probably sell them for several hundred pounds if I ever want to get rid of them, which I can't do with some of the money I've spent on other hobbies over the years.

I just wish my wife thought like I did

I've swore to myself that I'd never calculate how much I've spent. I've been in 40k for over a decade now, and I wouldn't be surprised if I'm over $10,000... hell, I've probably got close to 30k pts between all my armies, but I would rather remain blissfully ignorant.

Conservatively, if I were to replace my blood Angels army from the ground up, I would have to spend about $1,700 U.S. So not too bad. And I have spent less than a third of that in actual cash.

Lets see. When I first started out, I got a lot of stuff for my guard for real cheap and I scratchbuilt a lot of other stuff. Now since I have discovered the evils of e-bay, well..................
I think I have spent around $500 for my guard army, now with some Skitarii, I think about $700 all together for about 2.5k - 3.0k in points.

I have spent $520.50 before tax (not including my codex's) but I can field all my models for a minimum of 1,765 points, and a max of 2,055 points. That's about 3.4-3.9 points per Canadian dollar. That's all what you see is what you get.

2x crypteks
1x Illuminor Szeras
1x Anrakyr the Traveller
1x Imotekh the Stormlord
20x warriors
5x tesla immortals
5x gauss immortals
5x Deathmarks
1x Nightscythe (magnet job for doomscythe too)
1x ghost ark (with a darn fine magnet job for doomsday ark)
3x wraiths
5x scarab bases
1x monolith

I also have plans to spend up to $784.00 within the next 4-5 years. Thankfully my other hobby is going hiking off trail in the forest which only costs a couple of wet feet sometimes and once I missed a lecture.

I need to update my points...

Some of us who have been involved in the hobby for a long time have worked out the cost of our armies based on the amount actually spent and the amount adjusted to the value of today's currency.

It can be considerable. Like, year of college considerable.

I bought nearly all of my praetorian IG used, and there's no real way to figure out replacement cost since they are OOP. I'd guess I've spent north of $10,000 on the hobby as a whole. My IG has over 300 metal figs, so that's a lot right there. Add in about 30 tanks and 10 sentinels, plus four Valkyries, and that's a lot
