If you want an easy to paint horde army; play one of the undead armies and use skeletons instead of zombies. Brush them over in white, dab with black, THIN YOUR PAINTS; done.

Nahh, I think I'm gonna stay away from horde armies for a bit; it's the reason I chose to work on some high elves. I'll just pack my skaven up for a bit unless my gamestore decides to do some fun event with a large amount of points.
Plus, I really don't want to work on Skaven with 9th edition coming up.. at least if I work on high elves, I'll have a lot of pretty models to use in DnD/Pathfinder.

Yes I do believe in 'too many models', and have a strict regimen to avoid the problem....up to a point.
First I shouyldnt quantify 'too many'. To me that means either more than I can afford, and/or more than I can store. Both are dependent on home size and budget, so your mileage may vary, and so does mine from year to year.
My solution is to make a MASTER LIST for every army. This will be an arbitrary rounded number well in excess of that used in most games. I make lists for my armies to this total and dont allow myself to exceed it.
Now codex and army book changes will alter this a bit, but normally if I capped my list in a previous edition I dojnt change it for the new one, or allow myself one newly available unit, often years after I last invested in that army.
By and large the system works.
For Warhammer I called to 5000pts for High Elves, and 4000pts for all the other armies I collect. High elves being my main army has more, basically all the unit types from the army books.
For Warmachine I have 100pt armies, plus and unlimited number of Warcasters to choose from.
For 40K my cap is 3000pts, excluding titan class vehicles.
For BFG all my fleets but two are also 3000pts, though my Space Marine and Ork fleets are smaller (never completed them).
Having a master List and sticking to it means that I am never really tempted to splurge out on a faction I have already got. The only exceptions are solitary model which ar must haves and aren't really part of my army anyway. This included and Imperial Knight and an Arachnarok spider.
Its a system and ot works very well. The only problem is the 'up to a point' mentioned at the beginning, having a Masrter List and completing it and having the discipline not to exceed it doesn't prevent me from dumping cash on a new game. My 5K High elves done and dusted might have removed the urge to buy a new faction (though GW prices are also a large factor) it doesn't stop me from getting a brand new game system.
I am constantly buying stuff, and I really ought to stop.

That's actually a really good idea. I have a similar idea for the high elves I'm working on. Instead of 5000 points though, I basically just put together a competitive ETC/2500 point list with the help of some high elf veterans. My plan is to stick to it as best as I can. However, I know at my local gaming group, we also like doing tag-teams or T&T that consist of 1500-2000 points or so per person, so I also have a list for that.
I had that problem with Skaven haha. Problem is, I'm really not interested in any other system, so I don't really have to split up my spending.
If I had to fall back on another system, it'd probably end up being 40k or Warmachine.. But even then, I wouldn't enjoy it as much as Fantasy.

Haha, I just like the fact that I can say "Here are my 60 models that I painted.. I have 1500 points."
With Skaven it's more like, "Here are my 60 models that I painted.. I have one unit that costs a little over 100 points."

I've got over 300 DE models, for an estimated point value of 13K.
Somehow, the 7-800 skaven only total out around 6000.
Sigh.

The golden rule in Skaven listbuilding is "for every 10 points, you should have one model. Half of those should be slaves."
I follow that, as it really works well for making lists that work to the Skaven strengths and still allow me to bring fun stuff.
if I had a 20k point army, I would need 1000 slaves. I'm quite tired of painting them already at 180 finished slaves.

That's not grudge. That's a sickness.
I'm gonna be honest with you, that's one of the things that disturbs me most about GW fanboys. I know there such a thing as a lead mountain, I've got one myself. But when do you use even a fraction of all that for a game? Where do you store it all? Why do you need to buy more? How much of that expense would've gone towards a small force for about half a dozen other games?

You do have to be careful of the lead mountain. Things do build up, but as long as you keep working on it and not let things accumulate. Now I wouldn't say it is being a GW fanboy to have a large army. I buy the models I like. These days I don't give GW any of my money. IIRC the only models in my dwarf army that are in the current range is a few plastic organ guns, but I much prefer my metal ones. The vast bulk of my collections, dwarfs and other armies, are 5th & 6th ed. I for one don't care for the new GW style.
Now I haven't played a 10K game in a few years, but I have played several 5Ks. With large collections it is fun to do big campaigns with multiple large armies. Say you have 15K of any army break it into 3 different 5K forces and let each fight the campaign until it is exhausted. It makes for some fun times instead of recycling the same units over again.
As for storage, I currently have a 5x9 ping pong table that we play on at the house. I have about 20 some cases that slide right underneath, and the rest goes on shelves around the basement.

You're probably just burned out on skaven. Give it a few weeks/months and then come back to them, by then you'll have had a chance to build and paint something else and painting all those rats won't seem as daunting, it's what i did with my dwarf army.

Ya... You have to be really devoted to an army to paint that much of it... Happened with my VC army, just started it, but realized too late that the lore and models really didn't intrest me all too much and I hate painting zombies. Found my new love in beastmen though!

I painted my Vampires up one box at a time so I didn't get the overwhelmed feeling. Granted it took me well over a year before I had a big enough force to play a game, but painting hordes feels easier when I only have to finish 10 skeletons because those are the only unpainted models I have.
