In my opinion, a much better system. But I am neither a game designer nor businessologist.

That's ok, neither are GW.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

It would be an exercise in masochism, but looking through a couple of codices I'm confident I could but out a workable balance errata for most of 40k in roughly 24hrs of work. Though, I'd be a bit shakier on some of the most recent releases that happened while I was on hiatus after NOVA.

It may be an exercise in masochism, but one I think I would enjoy... so long as someone got use out of it.

The best thing is I"m not looking at a full Rewrite, but some basic rule and army building changes that would be quite simple like changes to Battle Brothers, Invisibility, Summoning, Flyer/FMC frequency, SH/GC availability, and then a per army errata basically addressing the worst and the best bringing things more in line. Give every Faction access to all book pscyhic powers and their individual book powers, except only Chaos has access to Malefic and no access to Sanctic. Yes, even Tyranids! Fix the broken powers, and open up access.

I'm thinking Take Space Marines as a starting point, improve internal balance and use it as a gauge for external balance. I mean a change to Battle Brothers fixes Cent Stars, a simple fix for Chapter Tactics could balance out White Scars. Fix Terminator Pricing, Add 1HP for Dreadnoughts, Fix costs for some vehicles, and upgrades prices for special weapons and heavy weapons, fix Grav Weapon Profile, fix certain overcosted units like Predators and Assault Centurions and the Land Raider.

Once SM was done, it wouldn't be hard to bring DA, BA, SW, and GK in line with it, you've already got the base units and only need to reprice their special snowflakes or account for their special rules.

And some of the fixes would just be so easy to accomplish like for Eldar rewriting Shurken to be AP4 on a 6 and no longer Autowounding on a 6, Make Scatter Lasers S5, make Windriders, 4+AS, Redo the Wraithknight, make Warp SPiders 22ppm instead of 19ppm, Regress Wraithcannons and Dannons. Fix some of the formations a bit.

Daemons... well with a fix to 2+/++ rerollable and summoning and some limits to FMCs and Flyers, they've already come a long way. Add in a "the Grimiore may never be used to improve a model's invulnerable save to better than a 3++, if any affect(including the Warp Storm) would improve a an invulnerable save affected by the Grimiore to better than a 3++ it instead is improved to a 3++ instead. Most units would be priced just fine the way they are. Well, drop the base cost of DPs by 20pt and increase the cost of the Wings upgrade by 20pts to incentive and balance ground DPs.

Tyrandids, fix the base overcosted T6 3+AS MC Chassis, so decreasing the base cost of the MC, and add to the cost of "Wings", make Ground Tyrants viable just like for DPs, or anything with a "Wings" variant.

I mean anything in the center 2/3 or 3/4ths of the power spectrum is likely just fine and it would go a very long ways towards rebalancing armies and increasing the diversity in units we see.

I like a lot of the concepts you've come up with there. I would be interested in what you'd do with the Tau book.

Thank you, I'm seriously considering the project, if not for widespread use but for fun and the mental exercise.

Tau, I am very familiar with Tau. Off the top of my head....

Just like everyone Seargent upgrade should be 5pt
Limit Signature Systems to 2 per model
Riptide Ion Accleerator should be a 30pt Upgrade
Fix the Heavy Rail Rifle, Maybe Heavy 2 for a small price increase or making it S9.
Maybe increase the cost of the HYMP Broadside by 5pts or the cost of Missile Drones.
Reprice or rework Vespid.
Shave a few points off the Devilfish.
Reprice/Rework the Sunshark and Razorshark.
Reprice the Hammerhead.
Reprice Pathfinder Special Weapons
Reprice Stealth Suits
Flamer Price upgrade should be 5/7pts
Firebase Support Cadre needs a rework or small tax which IMO is accomplished with the Broadside and Riptide reprising.

I mean, it wouldn't take much more than that and they'd be pretty much good to go. It would limit the Buffmander and the IA Riptide. 7th has gone a long way to Balance Tau out. Their most competitive choices would be balanced a bit better and their weaker never seen units would gain much more use. Took me about five minutes to balance most of the Tau Codex out. A lot of the complaints would be alleviated about the Tau, and balance would be much better both internally and externally.

Your friend likes losing automatically on the first turn?

I do not know, apparently he will be deploying one unit on first turn and the other deepstrikes.

I have been in a club that attempted a highlander like system except they limited it to two of each unit type.

It did not work. The game remained unbalanced and my poor ork horde suddenly became unfieldable. Surprisingly, the people who organised the system's army lists were almost untouched.

A solution that I have seen tossed around for 2++ rerolls is to make the reroll a 4++ to make it more killable. Still hard to get through, but not impossible.

Still waiting for Godot.

Aid Unlooked For forces LotD units to be held in reserve. If his entire army is LotD, he tables himself on the first turn.
