Cheers everyone, this is all such useful info, it's much appriciated.

I think my plan of attack will be thus:

Go and have a demonstration game at GW

Get GW to put a 500pt list together for Space Marines and get help on deciding a chapter

Buy my 500pt list

Buy the rule book off e-bay

Put togther a 500pt Vostroyan army ( i seriously can;t resist thier fantastic massive hats )

Use hypnosis on a friened to get them to give me a game.

And again; thanks to everyone for the advise and knowlage, you guys have been so helpfull

Sounds like a plan!

If all else fails, I could join you at Fanboy3 roughly once a month for a pick up game. The back half of the store is a large gaming room with a maze of tables.
I'm pretty new and only own infantry (and that one tank), so I'm not about to stomp anyone.

Yea i'd definitely be up for that if you're okay with it.

I joke about tricking my mates into playing with me, but in truth, everyone i know is a bit of nerd in one way or another. I'm sure if i provided the armies i could get a game out of a few of them, kids and mortgages permitting.

But yea it would be great to meet up at Fanboy3 for a game, i'll have to get buying some stuff

Be mindful that the GW guys are there to sell models, and so may give some biased advice. Not true of everyone sure but worth consideration. Have a look at the lists on dakka to get a feel for what other people are doing, see the critique that they get, and piece together something you like from there.

As for choosing a chapter, seriously cannot recommend lexicanum enough. Alternatively create your own!! And if you're ever in the Leeds or Wakefield area, give me a shout

TBH if chosing SM - which you are going for I think I suggest to wait a bit untill the nex codes is out. That's just a friendly advise, I think you dont wanna run into spending money in Models that you are not gonna use.

Cheers for that, i've been having a look through the lists on dakka, to give me a bit of an idea of what i'm looking for, so hopefully i shouldn't come away from the shop with the GW equivalent of magic beans. Will definitely give you a shout if i'm over your neck of the woods, it's good to know there's folks out there looking for a game

When's the new codex due out? I was mainly thinking of getting some more of the basic squad guys, they should still be relevant in the future right? Though knowing me i am liable to come out of the shop with a massive expensive tank

Yep, Kitch has it right there, get the list and then post it on Dakka, and then be mindful that everyone here also has their own bent when commenting... One man's "useless" is another man's keystone.
Me, I want to look good, and thus some of my gear is wasteful. Others are very economic.

Certainly. I don't imagine either of us are capable of doing it in June, but I'll give you a holler in July when I know the dates, and if you don't have an army yet, I'll lend you some of my stuff to have a crack at. You could see if the different weapons appeal for your own guys.

I'm not sure why he said he thinks your going for SM (space marines) when you just said you were going to buy a vostroyan army
The new IG codex hasn't even appeared in rumours yet so its probably at least a year away.
However whatever he meant either space marines or imperial guard, don't worry about your vostroyan models being made redundant; the basic footsoldiers will always be in every guard codex as will Leman russ battle tanks (they are the core imperial guard units and the occasional models which are kicked from codexs are unusual, barely used ones like rough riders). Go ahead with the vostroyans! And post some pics if you like, I've always admired the army's look as a fellow IG player.

It's even worse than you think, as a couple of them are recovered wargamming addicts from childhood, so i'm essentially trying to make them relapse

The plan now is to buy a small 500pt space marine force first as it should be cheaper on my wallet, and i'll be able to get started easier, and then buy a 500pt Vostroyan army. My thinking is if i've got two small armies, i'll be able to blag a mate in to playing. But it's good to know the new codex isn't due for some time, and i can buy some stuff rather than waiting for a new book.

Because he just said SM. And from what I read I thought he is going to spent 500 for both SM and IG.
Apologies for the spam thou, I just wanted to be helpful there so he wont end up spending money for an uneffective units.

You can always add the Firstborns to the Marines as Allied Detachment or vice versa. Honestly I never tried and I have no idea how this works.

Ah I see, must of just missed it when scrolling.

Dalin criid what do you mean when you say you have no idea how it works? Do you mean you don't know how the allies system works or how many allied models can be taken, which allies can pair with which etc.

I mean that I never used allied detachment before. I dont know can you bring 2 HQs one in a tank if IG is your ally detachment and etc. I just suggested it as an option, cause he have both IG and SM models and he can combine without spending too much money.

^I'm fairly sure it's exactly the same as if they're done separately since IG and SM are Battle Brothers, you could just stick the lists together with no issue. Unless I'm wrong.

Don't believe me? It's all in the numbers.

Number 2: That's terror.
