I understand completely even though I'm a very new player I have been through Guard, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Chaos Space Marines, in tha order. I am now finally settling on Craftworld Eldar. My recommendation choose a very versatile army that has lots of options, but make absolutely sure you like the fluff associated with them. My largest army was Guard at probably around 1500ish but got bored with it because I prefer playing as a Space Elf Jedi.
