Good day everyone. I make this thread to see how many of you out there are like me. Let me explain:
-When I build a new army, I aim for 1500-2000points list. Those are the models I want to get. (with the plan of expanding later)
-When I usually reach 1000pts, I kind of lose interest and see another shiny thing that I want.
-To convince myself to keep the army I started, I buy the codex.
-2Weeks later, I put 1200 pts of whatever on sell on ebay, and start buying new model for a new list.

I started when Dark Vengeance box was release. I played, in that order: Dark Angels, Orks, Space Marine, Tempestus Scions, Orks, Tau, and now Dark Angels.
I only have my Tau left (500pts) and I'm still building my Ravenwing (1250 approx). My Tau are on ebay, and I recently bought Ahriman and a squad of TSons :(

Eh, I've known a few folks tat do that. Personally I've been a mono IG player for the past decade. I did recently pick up Admech though, but i have no intention of selling anything.

I guess I'm just big on collecting. I get attached to army after putting so much work into converting and painting.

Damn, that's a lot of flipping and swapping!

For my part, I fall prey to the same urges but I don't always sell off what I'd previously worked on. Here's my timeline of 40K:

~2003: Bought a Space Marine tactical squad box. Over the next year or two, build the force up to about 1200-1500 points and play several games. Sometime between 5th and 6th, I sell off a lot of my vehicles and some older metal stuff. Around 2012, I resume interest in 40K and buy up a lot of used/ second-hand stuff. My Crimson Fists are now roughly 2500 points.

2005: While on an internship in Mojave, I get bored and order 2 squads of Chaos Space Marines, some Terminators and some Bloodletters. I've barely expanded them since, but I now have a couple more squads, 2 DV sets and some vehicles at least.

2006: I find an old Ork Battleforce on clear out at my FLGS, which I buy. I also get some Ork Boys and some Fantasy Orcs and use both the shootas and sluggas & choppas to turn Orcs into Orks. I don't really do much more with them though until the Assault on Black Reach is released 2 years later. After building up a good sized footslogging Green Tide and playing quite successfully with them, my interest in the game wanes between 2010 and 2012. With the release of the current Ork Codex, my passion is reignited and I purchase vehicles and specialists in droves. My Waaagh! probably comes in at close to 4000 points by now.

2006: Using some of my CSM models and the Space Wolves box, I cobble together a 13th Company warband as seen in Codex: Eye of Terror. My dislike of tanks (mostly because at this stage, I can't really afford them) draws me to the army, and I also buy a friend's 2 packs as he's getting out of 40K. Eventually, the 5th Edition Codex hits and invalidates what I'd already built. I buy a couple of the new boxes and then largely leave my SW alone. In 2014, the new Codex hits and the Stormclaw box comes out and both of these things throw me back into my Wolves with zeal. I buy many more packs of Wolves, as well as the new Skyclaws and Long Fangs. Now, I have a full Great Company's worth of the Sons of Russ; my army boasts over 140 infantry and 10 tanks and transports. It weighs in at well over 6000 points.

I've gone through this, however I'v never sold or traded my existing armies..I just started new ones!

Now I have 3 armies going...if I get bored with the one I am currently working on, I switch over to working on another one.

I would love to keep my old army when I have an urge to switch. but it happen too often. And I try to ''recycle'' most of the money I put in the hobby so it doens't too big of a burden.

Well, I have certainly dropped far too much money into it. I haven't played at all yet during 7th Edition, which pains me a little. I don't honestly know that I could get a lot of money for my stuff, which is why I've kept most of it. I did sell off my Dark Angels from the DV set along with a Rhino and a Predator I had to a good buddy who plays. I'd previously given him the Tyranids I had, since that's his main army.

Back in the day (3rd ed) I traded my 2k of Tyranids for Eldar which I then traded for CSM, I also sold all my orks aside from those in the 2nd ed boxed set and a few nobs and warbosses. Aside from those swaps/sells I've kept all my BA, expanded my CSM and bought a cron army a couple of years ago and built a renegade army over the last year. Last time I got rid of a model must have been a decade ago (much to my gfs despair - the downstairs storeroom is full of boxes and cases).

The advantage of having 4 armies (plus a little Inquisition) is that I never get bored of 1 army and sell it - I get bored of 1 army, 'shelve' it, then rediscover my interest in it a few months later.

I do the same thing but I never sell. Waste of money to sell. So I have a 1250pt list in Tyranids, Ultramarines, Astral Claws, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos Marines, an Imperial Knight and can prolly swing a Dark Angel list if I pick up Azrael but most would be in Astral Claw colors. Most of those can be built up to 1850pts. And a passing whim means in the next month or so I'll be starting Orks. Considering I started collecting again when 7th dropped, I'm doing pretty well from only having Tyranids and some Ultramarines.

Maybe the core of the issue is you enjoy the building and painting part more than playing the game. Buying a new army means you can build and paint again.

I have been doing this as well, for me its just playing armies till I find one that fits.

Started with tau, built a small ork force after a few months. Then traded tau for GK, and GK for DE. Orks have grown considerably and I really enjoy them.

I think you are right. I always try to buy my minis unassembled. I really like the game too, like I play every week or so, but building my minis with their little gear to fit in a list I have planned before is trully what I enjoy in this hobby I got my hand on my first couple model of Thousand Sons . Hopefully, I can keep my current 3 army and build on top of them instead of losing money selling and buying all the time hehe.

I like playing far more than building/painting. Well building is fun, but the painting is such a chore for me, and when it gets done, I don't want to get rid of it. I want to keep my labor of love.

So I have never sold a thing. Well I did sell an unbuilt model that I got because I decided I didnt want it anymore, but it was still on its sprue, so that doesnt really count.

I figure I will keep an army and continue to play and grow with it. So far I have gone through 5 codecies for 2 armies. Black Templar, Orks (4th), Space Marines (6th), Orks (7th), space marines (7th). So the armies even change a little bit as time goes by. So its like, (kind of) getting a new army.

So I get the urge to acquire new armies? Sure, all the time. I have made lists and plans for Chaos Daemons, Chaos Marines, Imperial Guard, Eldar, Dark Eldar, and even Tau. But I never commit to spending enough money to actually start a sizeable force, and i would never dream of selling my current army

English Russia.

I do this a massive amount, not just with warhammer but historicals too.

I find if I have 2 main projects (currently Soviets and Germans for rapid fire) then when I get bored of that I can start a side project, usually a skirmish or small scale game that I can finish painting and building. This means I get to have new shiny things while maintaining a core project.

I have gone through many periods and armies, i've even had space marines on 4 seperate occasions. I now keep a small space marine force, because I know if I sell it, i'll end up buying another one!

Oh man, the first monster I see I'm going to sneak up behind him, whip out my wand, and shoot my magic all over his ass.

Me too - I always buy unassembled. I would recommend not selling your stuff though - I find playing the same army over and over again is boring so I am always building another one.

I've built one of every army except now Tau, AdMech and Knights, others I've built multiples of IGx3, Generic Marines x2, Two different Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeentch armies, Orks x2 and so on. I currently have all the armies in my list below, but have sold off plenty in the past. Multiple marine armies, multiple IG armies, Witchhunters/SOB, Daemonhunters/Grey knights, Tyranids, Necrons, Nurgle, Tzeentch and Slaaneshi chaos marines and every time use those dollars to buy the next projects. I am not as bad as you are, as I usually finish and play with the armies a few times before selling them off. In some ways I am worse, though, because I start my next new project by buying 2k-3k worth of models for the new project all at once. Some, like the necrons, once I was done the modeling aspects I just wasn't as into playing it because it was for the codex 2 versions back and there just wasn't as much variety in the army then and it always felt the same. Usually I would get new modeling ideas and sell off old stuff to pursue them, especially during a point where I was recovering from a server illness and on disability. Recent years I've really just added, though I did sell off my 2nd ork army to fund the purchase of an eldar ghost warriors type army instead. So even today I still do this from time to time.

Sounds like you enjoy the modeling aspects and the fresh excitement of a new project. Nothing wrong with that, though it does make it hard to get much game playing in.

Guilty as well. I have sizeable Tyranid and Ork armies and I'm really looking at starting Guard with marine/mech allies (because why not do another horde army).

Worst part, I haven't played a game with my Nids or my Orks because I paint them before I put them together and they're not done yet.

I switch all the time. I have two "main" armies that I will be focusing on, and a few smaller "side" armies along with the two. I'm not limiting myself on what I can and can't do, I've learned that I love learning about the various armies and building lists just as much as I love painting, modeling and playing.

Good to hear this... I'm just getting into the hobby, barely started to paint my first army, Orks (well, been at it for a long time, but don't have much time available to work on it, so end result: after probably months I haven't finished my first 5 boyz), but I'm already looking at other armies and wishing I'd picked them. Not really "instead of" the Orks, which I still love, but, I dunno... when I see those Skitarii models, or some Nids (love some color schemes, hate others), or any Eldar (regular, Dark, or Harlequins)... damn they look nice!

I think you all are crazy. I started with eldar back in 4th, stuck with them for a long while, never even looked at other armies just slowly (like glacier speed) painted and made my own fluff for them.
Now that I feel my painting is to a passable level, I've started in on a SM chapter with tons of kitbashes and conversion work, and they're almost done, after that I'm gonna go back and repaint my craftworld with all I've looked learned.
Switching armies so often feels icky though, how am I supposed to develop characters and stories if I sell them all?

I just kept going through armies till I found ones I liked. I trade a lot. Went through a lot of armies lol in this order
Tyranids 4000pts
Dark eldar 4000
Tau. 2000
Skaven 4500
Sisters of battle(best army ever) 4500
Orks 5000
Chaos space marines 11000
Grey Knights 4000
Wood elves 2500
Before finally sticking with, and keeping, 1 imperial knight.
Imperial fists 6000 and Dark Angels Ravenwing 2000and Deathwing 1000 and 1500 warriors of chaos. Got a small tau army that I haven't painted yet. But I think that is around 1500 points. It's an addiction.

The advantage of swapjng armies is that you learn the game faster and better.

If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles~Sun Tzu

Unfortunately for me, my only army has been Chaos Space Marines for over 6-7 years now. I join the covenant of evil Sorcerers and signed a blood pact. I did not know my army so I built a weak warband. I did not know my enemies and lost the battle before it began...

Coming back briefly to demonstrate my faded glory of chaos to new players in hopes they would buy it, I am kicking butt in a non competitive environment. I understand the weakness of CSM and I know the typical net lists being played and ehat the newbs are striving torwards. I use the versatility afforded by my obliterators. I soak up bullets with my spawns. I scare them them with my 1 heldrake. Then I surprise them with my termicide to blast his expensive toy tanks.

It is hard to decide a right army. I started Dark Vengeance -> Eldar -> CSM -> DA and now finally vanilla SM. Maybe I try Necrons some day.

I play rarely, but I enjoy fluff and reading 40K books. Sometimes I buy some models and then get rid off them after playing one game.

I finally got all the model I needs for 2k of DA. Since my 500pts of Tau is fully painted, I'm working on doing the same with my DA. I paint relativly quickly (I'm not that good tho) so I hope to finish my army by the end of the year (I already have started).
