Or you know... because working your ass off all day to have no financial security and to muck about in filth like laborers do in 3rd world countries sucks donkey balls

Like I said, "First World living standards". I did not say that was a bad thing. I am of the opinion that any full-time job should provide a living wage, at the absolute minimum. No one who works a full-time week should live in poverty, I don't care what their job is or who they work for.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I wasn't disagreeing. I was rephrasing with my own brand of abrasive flavor

I've lived on both sides of that line, and one side completely and utterly sucks. Worse yet, you try to explain to others how insanely stressful and agonizing living in that state is. Seriously, people wonder why poverty and crime go hand in hand, probably because being poor drives people to madness, Anyway, you try and explain to people that kind of suffering and all you get is self-righteous quips about how you "should have worked harder." As if your somehow not already working really hard.

And then we just have to accept that the reason people don't work bo dunk laborer jobs so much anymore is because automation is rending human labor in a lot of manufacturing obsolete

But that would be talking sense.

Pretty much, yep. The counter argument to that is that automation has been driven by the higher price of labour - if you can pay a person $1 a day then there's not much point buying a robot to replace them.

But the point there is that all the jobs lost to automation have been picked up in other economic sectors. Manufacturing and primary industries have replaced labour with automation, and those jobs have flowed to the service sector.

I thought American domestic production increases were down to slave lab... erm... prison labour? So there are still no manufacturing jobs as it is cheaper to force prisoners to do the work for 1p a day in poor conditions.

It is a factor that bothers people at an international trade level - slave labour is banned but the US uses prison labour paid at slave labour rates. But as a proportion of total manufacturing its quite trivial.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
