U.S. Immigrant Population Hits Record High of 42.4 Million fullscreen (Photo Illustration: NRO) Share article on Facebook share Tweet article tweet Plus one article on Google Plus +1 Print Article Email article Adjust font size AA by Mark Antonio Wright September 22, 2015 12:00 AM
The U.S. immigrant population reached a record high of 42.4 million according to a new analysis of census data — and the growth rate of the foreign-born population is accelerating. A new Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) report shows the legal- and illegal-immigrant population grew by 2.4 million since 2010, with more than a million new arrivals in 2014. The dramatic increases in immigration are evident in both absolute numbers of the foreign born and as a share of the U.S. population. “Immigrants (legal and illegal) comprised 13.3 percent or about one out of eight U.S. residents in 2014, the highest percentage in 104 years,” the report notes. And the growth in the immigrant population is accelerating rapidly, from an increase of a half million immigrants per year between 2010 and 2012 to over a million from 2013 to 2014. The immigrant share of the population has more than doubled from what it was in 1980, when illegal and legal immigrants together made up just 6.2 percent of the country. Additionally, when the 16.2 million U.S.-born children of immigrant parents are included, one in six U.S. residents is an immigrant or the child of an immigrant – a total of 58.6 million people in 2014. The authors of the study, Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler, used data from the Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey (ACS) which, according to the report, “allows for a more detailed analysis [of the immigrant population] by country of origin and state of residence.” According to CIS, the survey is the largest conducted by the government each year and provides a more in-depth look at the composition of the American population than the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, which, though released more regularly, does not measure the immigrant population as comprehensively and uses a smaller sample size. Share article on Facebook share Tweet article tweet Sub-Saharan African, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries saw the largest relative growth in immigrant flows. Immigration from predominantly Muslim countries grew at a rate of 19 percent between 2010 and 2014, including immigration from Saudi Arabia (up 93 percent), Bangladesh (up 37 percent), and Iraq (up 36 percent). Canada and Europe declined as sources of immigration to the U.S. More Immigration The U.S. Shouldn’t Feel Migrant Guilt Obama Unilaterally Rewrites Immigration Law — Again Games Without Frontiers The analysis comes on the heels of two CIS reports earlier this month showing that a majority (51 percent) of households headed by immigrants used at least one welfare program — such as Medicaid, food aid, housing programs, and cash assistance — significantly higher than the rate of welfare use among native-born–headed households (30 percent). The studies showed that three-fourths of immigrant households using welfare were headed by legal immigrants. The reports raised questions for supporters of mass immigration who claim that it is an unalloyed benefit to the United States. — Mark Antonio Wright is an intern at National Review.

Exactly. Now that our cuisine is the greatest in the history of the 9 planets, we can relax and let someone else get all empirelike.

Though, to bring it back to the original subject, I think we can reasonably house almost any number of 42mm people. There is plenty of land where those but 4cm tall can build communities, never mind the infrastructure currently available in America's cities.

Frazzled, arent you supposed to be at the border with your hunting rifle, Night Vision Glasses and a cooler of beer preventing this stuff?

No, only 42mm people are legal immigrants. All our 28mm dudes are illegals

I don't think you understand. We have revised our strategy. The plan now is to have so many move from central America, that when we march to the Panama Canal as part of Manifesto Destiny II (this time its vertical) there will be no resistance. Then when we have collected all the pyramids in the Americas, we'll take over Egypt and have an absolute monopoly on pyramids. ISIL is busy blowing up all the ziggurats everywhere else.
I do find it interesting that LA declares an emergency homeless situation the same time the State department agrees to take in what 175,000 refugees.

Sorry, its kind of a rule for First World countries. I'd bet its also directly tied to IPhones. I think they send out waves. The commies tried it in the floouride but IPhone impacts fluids. Thats why its best to only imbibe pure grain alcohol and distilled water.

Good. The US needs to keep getting injections of culture and ideas. I personally believe we should let a lot more people in and ease up on the citizenship requirements.

Only if the native birthrates are too low.
Anyway, Immigration isn't as important as it was 100-150 years ago. We have a very different economy that isn't reliant on cheap immigrant labor, and most of the remaining cheap manual labor is often taken up by illegal immigrants(usually because legal labor charges too much) or just migrant workers(who also don't cost as much as permanent residents will demand.

Yes, and that's true of every single developed country in the world. The US has 1.88 kids per woman. You need 2.0 to maintain your current population.

You have a different economy, but some things don't change. One of the things that doesn't change is that old people don't work. This means that if you maintain a birth rate below 2.0 and don't have immigration, then you'll quickly find a large retired population needing to be cared for by a declining working age population.
This is the exact problem Japan is in. No-one wants to repeat Japan's last two decades.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Ehm... no? Most major US companies are reliant on cheap labor. This is why they keep shipping jobs overseas or using off-shore contractors.

Not in country. Labor available domestically is too expensive.

Or you know... because working your ass off all day to have no financial security and to muck about in filth like laborers do in 3rd world countries sucks donkey balls
Of course, we can cry "dey tuk mah jerb!" all day and whine about losing jobs to overseas countries, or we could actually look at data and see that US domestic production of Consumer goods has spent the last 35 years increasing and is still increasing;
And then we just have to accept that the reason people don't work bo dunk laborer jobs so much anymore is because automation is rending human labor in a lot of manufacturing obsolete
But that would be talking sense.
Also, mandatory South Park clip;

I thought American domestic production increases were down to slave lab... erm... prison labour? So there are still no manufacturing jobs as it is cheaper to force prisoners to do the work for 1p a day in poor conditions.

I've worked in manufacturing for 15 years. Yes, we pay more than some plant in Mexico, but the companies I've worked for still make a ton of money with US labor costs.
