Been wanting to start an adepta seroritas army for a while now but they just are low tier and their models are expensive.

But if you really want to go for it, you'll need lots of immolators, lots of dominions and 3 exorcists. Since look seems to guide your model choices, saint-celestine is one of the greatest model I've seen GW make.

Best try Ebay for the immolators, http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Sisters-of-Battle-Immolator.
The Repressor seems to have gone aswell, from forge world.

Strange appears in stock on English site.

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.
Welcome to Fantasy 40k

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

Good pair of clippers will see you right for most useful conversions and the sculpts are nice enough that they deserve the extra few minutes washing and de-flashing them before assembly and painting.

My major aggravation with metal is that even good paint jobs don't seem to hold up after years of heavy use (i.e. handling them) I feel like I should wear gloves just to play with them and never let anybody touch them. I had a lovingly painted (perhaps badly since they were my first) Sisters army of about 2000 points and with handling and drops by silly people the paint is coming off slowly. Yes I did seal them. My plastic Immolators have held up wonderfully though. i began assembling my army has been built up since just before 5th edition rolled out.

Now they never come out to see the table for various reasons but mainly because I grew tired of my one effective build against my friends armies. That being said most days they rocked if I went first and did adequately if I didn't.

If you use an enamel-based undercoat rather than the acrylic one games workshop suggests, it adheres to the metal a lot better. You still have to worry about them getting knocked, but they won't flake off from just being handled any more.

Furyou - normal undercoat works fine, just hit them with a coat or 2 of matt varnish once painted.
My metal nids have been painted for 10+ years and get used 2-3 times a month for games, never any paint damage.

OT - £70 will be a tad restrictive, but it gets you the basics.

HQ wise a cannoness or celestine works fine.

Troops - just get base sized units with a melta gun to keep price down.
The pre-made box is a waste of money as you will scrap the storm bolter straight away.

Immolators are a must for them.
Great vehicles too.

I know you want to go from GW, but have you tried eBay?
A guy last week was selling basic sisters for £2 each and he had 60 to sell.
So you get nearly double for your money.

Also, seraphim are much better to grab off ebay too.

Also, as a final note, I know I've got a full squad with superior, melta and multi melta plus a few other bits laying about somewhere.
I'll drop you a PM when I dig them out as your welcome to them, no use to me as I never got around to building them even.

I haven't been online in a while, thank you all for your responses, they have been a ton of help! The "sisters" are going to see their first game on friday hopefully (I'm proxying marines for regular battle sisters at the time being) as allies for my imperial guard. I'm going to take a 6 man squad with heavy flamer to ride in an immolator, and a 9 man squad with Canoness to chill in a rhino, but I'm not sure if mechanising all my troops is a good idea... what is your opinion on this?

You honestly might be better off proxying with Marines. Sisters models are old and kinda junk to be honest.

That's the charm in them though, I prefer the older models. (I much prefer the mk1 rhino over the newer one, for example.) They just have a certain look that I prefer over the newer models. Also I am not a fan of marines at all, I just happened to get a ton of them free because magic.

I think the metal Sisters look fine. They certainly look better from an aesthetics point of view then any count-as or proxies I've seen around the internet.

Actual Battle Sister models. Accept no substitutions - the models have aged incredibly well, nothing else from that era looks even half as good as the Sisters still do.

They certainly look better than any cartoony Space Marine model.

It really irritates me when I see people talking gak about metal sisters. They're steadfast, reliable... badass. Everything you want in a genderflipped Knight Templar with a flamethrower!

Anyway! I love mechanised Sisters. They let us take advantage of our small squad sizes without getting wiped out before we can get into flamer range.

the sisters played their first game the other day...and lost spectacularly!

well..it was to Tau, with a Y'vana (or however you say it.) and O'ralai... so very mean, the guy I was playing against couldn't stop apologising.
I only managed to take out a broadside and a crisis suit, but it was a good game none the less.

One piece of modelling advice.

Even if you intend to use it as a Rhino, always get an Immolator kit instead of a Rhino kit.

The Immolator kit is not only more SoB-themed, but also comes with the parts to swap out the Immolator turret for a nifty cupola with a stormbolter, which turns your Immolator into a Rhino. And neither needs to be glued in place.

Also, if you're not a fan of the Exorcist model (for some reason) a modern Space Marine Whirlwind's turret fits into that same hole with a bit of filing.

Without a more detailed report, I can't be more help, but it sounds like you're not being aggressive enough. The easiest win strategy for Sisters is "Get everything together, and ram it as far down the enemies' throat as it will go."

Note that this does NOT apply to trying to charge footslogging Battle Sister Squads toward 20-strong mobs of Ork Boyz.

... Yes, the nuances of the tactic come from knowing when you're finally close enough to start shooting, lol.

Although if it's a 20-strong Sisters blob with the right support elements...

10, and their sister BSS took massive casualties from a good hit from a Shokk Attack Gun on turn 1 or 2.

And there was a hill in the middle that blocked LoS until the Orks came over it. My squad got one round of Overwatch in, and that was it for them.

All around terrible generalship on my part.
