I don't think I have ever updated my Windows 7 on my PC since installing it. Don't know whether this is good or bad.
I also have Windows 7 on my laptop, and it wants to update pretty much everytime I use it. Today it even rebooted itself (thanks to which I lost my work) because it wanted to update itself so badly. Fething annoying. I should be in control, not stupid Windows.
Just wait until the inevitable moment Microsoft releases Windows 66, which is sentient and secretly starts taking over your life.

Well, can't say I'm surprised. Time to deactivate Windows Update before switching back to Linux, I guess.

I'm sorry but after reading through the articles, none of these things have been changed since Vista. They've been doing this stuff for years and you can still opt out by changing a setting, hardly the spooky thing they're trying to spin this as, a single tweet contains scarier stats tbh..

The spyware/keylogging aspects of Windows 10 were added to the updates for Windows 7 & 8/8.1 a couple months ago already. So, for most people, it's already too late.

For those worried about updating older PCs/Laptops, W10 runs on older hardware as well as XP with Service Pack 3, maybe a little bit better.

Just a question, but if you have a 32-bit version of Windows, like on my PC, will the new updated Windows version be 64-bit? Or will it be a 32-bit Windows 10?

32-bit of course.

It depends on your computer.

Microsoft can now disable pirated software
What happened?
Microsoft updated the terms and conditions of its End User Licence Agreement (EULA) to allow it to disable any counterfeit software or hardware found on your PC without requiring any further consent. If you’re using a Windows 10 computer, you will have agreed to the new terms the first time you ran the new operating system.
Section 7b of Microsoft’s Services EULA, titled “Updates to the Services or Software, and Changes to These Terms”, stipulates that it “may automatically
check your version of the software and download software update or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the
Services, playing counterfeit games or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices.”

How will it affect you? If you use a Windows 10 PC, a Windows Phone or any of Microsoft’s other devices, the company can now disable
any games you’ve pirated or hardware you’ve unlawfully hacked. However, while it’s obvious what Microsoft means by “counterfeit games”, the wording
“unauthorised hardware peripheral devices” is a little hazy. We think it could mean that Microsoft can now block devices such as uncertified PCs or
illegally modified Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers. Also, Microsoft’s EULA doesn’t state if it will also disable other counterfeit software, such as cracked
versions of Office or Adobe Photoshop, or if it only cares about pirated games. Either way, if you only ever use legally
purchased programs and games, then you don’t need to worry.

I'm just going to put this out there that you probably shouldn't be pirating software in the first place. Same for movies and DRM protected music.

I know, but money doesn't fall from the sky, unfortunately.

+ Any pirated windows 10 copy will probably come without these "functionalities", and I guess it's possible to block any entering connexion from Micro$oft via a Firewall. But still, I'm staying on my legit Windows 7 copy.

And yet another example of a lesson companies should have learned by now: if you put obnoxious DRM into your product then someone will hack it, put it up for download, and provide a superior product that also just happens to be free.

Piracy really is an availability issue. Most people will get legit copies (or, like me, who occasionally pirates stuff when I don't have the money available, and then buys it later), if they can get that at a reasonable price and availability. There are those who are going to pirate not matter what, but they

a. are donkey-caves

and

b. will find away around pretty much any DRM anyway

so excessive DRM will only hurt those of us who buy it legitimately.

Yep. It is obvious with independent games. Most people (who pirate games) pirate a lot of them then buy the ones they like.

No, you will still manually have to accept the "update". My computer (w7) has had the update "ready" since July. It's still W7 until I say otherwise.
What it means is that when windows downloads/installs it usual updates (update tuesday?) you will no longer have the option to pick and choose which of them you get.

You're right. That said, I'll just put it out there that Microsoft is not The Internet Police and it's not their place to tell you what programs you can run on the computer you paid for.

I wonder how much money the entertainment industry paid them to implement this.

And I'm almost certain that these shiny "anti-piracy measures" will fail soon enough. Unless they impose a constant Internet connexion to Micro$oft servers in order to use Windows, but there would be riots

The thing is that most pirates will get round this is no time, and the scary part is that Microsoft has no way to ensure only pirate material is disabled. What happens if it gets it wrong and disables Word the day before a report is due? What if it takes a dislike to some new hardware I connected, or some software it doesn't recognise? What if Firefox or Chrome 'accidentally' get disabled for the population, and so on?

It's not as if pirate software will have anything specifically standing out as being pirated. The false positives could have serious implications, as I imagine if there is a process to reverse the block it'll be pretty tedious.

I really don't want an automated system making decisions over what I can and cannot run on my own hardware; it's too unreliable. Laws exist to (ineffectively) deal with piracy as it is.

In the choice between "Free Software" and "free" software (that a vendor can potentially lock you out of), I guess he's going for the safer of the two?

Also, to be fair, he never said 'games'. You can potentially pirate a lot of software on a computer, the OS included.
