Well, can't say I'm surprised. Time to deactivate Windows Update before switching back to Linux, I guess.

As they start phasing out previous versions of the software, it only makes sense.

Win10 is an upgrade to both of those legacy platforms in every sense.

Yes, but no. It seems a bit too convenient to hide between the old "this is outdated" excuse to force customers to upgrade their system to a glorified spyware.

This is why windows is not allowed to update on it's own, EVER, on any machine I own. I don't trust those fethers.

I switched my windows update from ask me to never just incase.

Windows 10 can feth off with its keylogging and spying. It is only be a matter of time until wherever the keylogs are sent, gets hacked and 10s of millions of users passwords and bank details are datamined.

Oh, I don't know. I generally see Linux distros detecting hardware as good as or better than Windows does. The debian/Ubuntu based ones (Mint, Zorin, etc) seem at this point to have a less schizophrenic setup/configuration process than Windows 10. You can have one of three different NVIDIA drivers installed automatically (and switch at anytime) with the click of a menu item. I don't use any of those distros, because I got slackware where I want it, but I do check them out from time to time.

Also, Zorin has "view modes" that configure your UI to resemble Gnome 2, Windows, or OSX (OSX only if you get the version that requires a donation). Set it up for my sister on the old Lenovo laptop I'm going to give her next time I see her. If you're fleeing Microsoft, it's probably the way to go if you want a familiar look and feel.

Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD, not Linux. Android is based on Linux, though!

I am not super keen on Windows 10's privacy invasion features and not sure if I'm being unreasonable because of it. Mainly because I don't know how much Windows 8 is invading my privacy already.

This. LOL at those who think MS is just now starting to do these things.

Of course they did this long ago, but it's the first time they're so... Damn, forgot the word.
Anyway it seems they don't give a feth about it anymore, they're not even trying to hide it.

Microsoft is honestly a bit behind the curve here. Lots of programs and services have been doing this for years, but an OS doing it is a new level of "as a consumer I hate this utterly, but I don't have much choice because the whole market is this way."

I have pretty much the same view of this that I had during the big PRISIM data mining scandal.

It's a good thing they're shocked. It's much better than plain apathy, or worse, joyful acceptance "But after all, I have nothing to hide!".

Eh, I just automatically assume my privacy is being invaded, it's easier that way. So anything I really want to keep private I just keep physical.

Control Panel -> Windows Update -> Settings

And I guess you can also block Microsoft servers with your firewall/hosts file, but it is a bit of an overkill.

Might depend on which Windows you have, but on W7:
Hit the little windows menu and type "update" into the search box.
select "windows update"
select "change settings" on the left side of the window that just popped up
In the dropdown menu under "Important Updates" choose the setting you want

Click the Windows icon (usually on the bottom left of your monitor), and look for 'PC Settings.' It's icon is gear. Alternatively type 'Settings' into the search bar and click of 'Settings App.'

From there; Update & Recovery > Windows Update > Advanced Options

From there you should see the ability to click 'Automatic' and 'Notify to Schedule Restart.'

This is where Windows systems kind of mess with you though, as the system will still automatically download updates. You can just basically ignore them for as long as you want.

You can however get around that by changing your network to a 'metered' connection. Windows is set not to download over these connections.

To do this, from the Settings/Settings App go to Network & Internet. Go to advanced options again. You should find 'metered network' as an option. Set that to on. It won't have any effect on your internet performance, but it'll stop windows from downloading updates it's just going to make you say "don't install" to later.

I've declined the 'offer' to upgrade to Windows 10 simply because I'm not convinced the laptops can support it. They weren't made with Windows 10 in mind. In the past an upgrade in operating system has meant a bigger memory hog and that affects everything else.

My old windows 7 laptop upgraded to 10 and actually runs a lot better now, at least for me.
