Actually, I could see it as the reverse.

The Mechanicus and Imperium have had "Mirror Shield" technology for a LONG time. Kastelan Robots and their Repulsor Grids immediately spring to mind.

It could be that the Spyrer Hunting Rigs had that tech, and the Tau 'acquired' working examples from the Spyrers and started experimenting with it.

That feels a lot more natural.

While there has been some hints that the hunting rigs are Xeno tech, that could just be a ruse, or a dangling GW plot thread.
GW has always tried to give the Tau an undercurrent of subversion and mind control, so linking them to the suits and making noises about how the suits could be monitoring them is par for the course.

Of course the rigs are made off world by an unknown group, but use nanotechnology and are tailored to human ritual pretty extensively. If anything they are more likely to be of sinister mechanicum providence, an unscantioned design based on golden age sport hunting gear. I don't have the books anymore, but I thought there was a section where once your gang achieves their goal, the suits AI reconfigures and improves it. Such a device borders on tech heresy and I bet any magos who makes it would be very, very discreet.

Given the gross ignorance of humanity about technology, few if any would be able to determine what the basis of the suits is, and while any single Inquisitor could make a guess, you would need confirmation from the wider mechanicum.

Regardless of their Fluff background, over the long weekend, I managed to buy a couple more Malcadons to add to my collection!

I now own a total of:
- 6 Malcadons
- 3 Jakara
- 2 Yeld
- 1 Orrus
= 12 Spyrers total

And yes, Fluff-wise, the suits upgrade according to their usage; it is no more heretical than how SM armor improves its efficiency to match its user.
