Yes, every formation, whether core or auxiliary is still a formation. You can take them without having to take a Hunter Contingent. You don't get the benefits from the Hunter or Dawn Blade Contingents obviously, but you can absolutely legally make your entire army list a CAD with one or more formations attached, make it nothing but formations, or make it all one single formation.

Indeed, just make sure that it actually IS a Formation by looking at the datasheets between the Lords of War Role units and the Armoury. Just because it is a Choice in a Contigent/Decurion/Strike Force/Warhost, does not necessarily make it a Formation.

I know a lot of people made this mistake when the Necron's Decurion came out, so it is good to be aware.

Can you give an example?

Ghaz gave some from the Decurion:
Ghaz wrote:Star-God, Deathmarks and Flayed Ones in a Decurion are not Formations.

Space Marines have their Command Choice Strike Force Command as just a Choice, not a Formation.

Eldar have Heroes of the Craftworlds, Living Legends, Outcasts, Engines of Vaul, and Wraith Construct Choices which are not listed as Formations.

For Dark Angels, it is the Inner Circle Choice which is not a Formation option.

I do not have access to the Kau'yon or Mont'ka, so I cannot go in to theirs, but the standard concept is in place and easy to extrapolate.

But those are each unit selections.

Those are detachment Choices. There is no unit called "Star-God" or "Living Legend" or "Strike Force Command". Indeed, Strike Force Command is a collection of units much like a Formation, but cannot be taken as such outside of the Gladius Strike Force. The units listed in that Choice can be, but outside of these Choice Detachments, they just go by their Unit Names. Now, some of those Choices are named after the one unit in their list, Deathmarks and Flayed Ones, specifically. But either way, they still are not Formations as none have a datasheet nor listed as a detachment or formation.

Not sure what your point is.

The point is answering your question. Better question is why you brought it up.

Asked for an example, and examples were given. Everything else was additional nonsense, it seems.

Such as your point about "unit selections"?

Guys, this sort of back and forth is a good way to get a thread locked.

Ultimately, the question has been answered. If the Contingent/Decurion Command/Core/Auxiliary choice has a separate Formation Datasheet, you can take it outside the Contingent. If it doesn't, you can't. Not all Contingent/Decurion choices have separate Formation Datasheets.

Assuming the objective is a Battle-forged army, of course.

Yes, yes. Standard discussion points apply. If you're taking an Unbound army, you can take pretty much whatever you want and 99% of the topics about list construction on this forum become unnecessary. You'll still only be able to get Formation benefits if the group of models taken actually has a Formation Datasheet.
