Hacking can be extremely effective! Just don't go overboard, as you still need to spend points on bullets and missiles, instead of too many on computer science kids and repeaters.

Overlord from say, a Custodier, is hitting on 14s vs the enemy reset (fairly even for both sides), and taking over an enemy BTS6 TAG 55% of the time. That's not bad for an order where the enemy cannot hurt you doing it. And once you've grabbed the TAG, they've got tough choices especially if it's equipped with template weapons.

Where in the world are you getting those numbers?

A Custodier has a 27,99% chance to succeed overlord vs a WIP 13 BTS6 TAG

I meant to clarify, 'after you hit, you take it over 55% of the time'. Since Overlord has Breaker as a characteristic, so it's effective BTS3 vs 14 from the hacking.

So yeah, you've got between a quarter and a third chance in general (Depending on the details), but that's very powerful for something that removes the enemy's most powerful unit as a threat for a least one turn, already positioned to do massive damage to your foe.

When you can walk across a 7in gap and all the other guy can do is discover you before you end your move in total cover. Then use Cybermask to do it again.

Agree totally with the value of the HD+ but as with the defensive device its something that is not available to everyone.
Playing Nomads i'd say go for it and take one over a regular device and learn the use of the additional programs with the rest.
Maybe do the same with CA via the Umbra Legate.
But with Aleph the Asura is quite an investment and I think in this instance you would want to be building your list and strategy around this pick

As with the defensive device its more faction specific which is why I describe them as niche

That would make it limited not niche. There is nothing niche about a Impersonation high WIP objective. In a game built on objectives.

The reason Asura don't always field a HD+ is because unlike other HD+ unit, Asura is giving up Multi/Spitfire. Even then the HD+ is one of the more played profile, because you win with objectives and can lose by killing off the otherside.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

I use niche in this sense: "Niche market, a focused, targetable portion (subset) of a market sector"
As the HD+ is only available to a few factions I'd maintain it is niche. But we are just arguing semantics here. I agree with you that its a great piece of kit & I default to it as the load out for my Asura.

As I said previously, while you are learning hacking, If you have access to it, take it in place of the standard device and experiment with all the programs available.
