Taking bikers as an escort to a character isn't a waste of points and I am surprised you would suggest it is. Bikers aren't a poor unit, and even with a footslogger chasing them around they aren't a wasted choice. 4 bikers conga lined in front of a character can effectively extend that character's charge range by up to 20 inches.

OP: If all you are interested is getting a Terminator Model on the table, and want to minimise wasted investment, a sorcerer in terminator armour is a cheap way to accomplish that, having a force weapon by default drastically reduces the cost of upgrading to terminator armour compared to the lord (85 vs 105 points IIRC).
