I was suggesting instead of taking the ENTIRE tidewall, taking only 1 fortification from within it, the drone port in particular, or unbound and bringing the drone port and gun rig as separate entities, so they can move, "keeping the same orientation" but not having to be a massive 20" wide object

You cannot take the Tidewall in parts. it is one big mammoth thing. It HAS to be taken that way and has to end its movement in the same formation. it isnt like the Gunrigs which can be 6" apart (although they also must end in the same formation).

You haven't read the Tidewall entries, have you?
Tidewall Shieldline is its own unit entry. Same thing with the Gunrig and Droneport. You absolutely can take them by themselves.

"stupid" isnt a reason. That could be said of a lot of things. We don't freaking ban a unit for being "stupid". Necrons have this SAME ability! No hue and cry about that unit!

If I'm not mistaken the Praetorians' rule is worded differently. But you're right, a unit having stupid rules is no grounds to ban it. I was just voicing my opinion on the Tidewall Rampant. The Tidewall taken as a whole is really expensive for a few gimmicks like most other fortification networks. It's best to take the parts that work the most alone and put the saved into the rest of your army.

You can only take ONE fortiifcation. So i guess if you want JUST one wall section... But whats the point? Its shorter than an aegis. One gun is too easy to kill and protects ONE unit if its not too big and so on.

So...Sure? You could I guess.

Got another game in with them, against an ork horde (Tau's favorite).

I was losing pretty much the whole game as far as Maelstrom went because of being a gunline BUT did eventually get the Maelstrom points to within one. I lost the Maelstrom mission 10-9. As it was an ITC mission, it also had a Primary objective which was emperors Will. I was able to secure BOTH of those thanks to my Sniper Drones on one end and Fire Warriors on my end. He did NOT like my Sniper Drones. They did WORK.

As that left the game tied 4-4, we looked to the non-primary objectives to see who had won.

Both of us acheived the Objective to kill the most expensive unit of the enemy. We also were both able to Line break despite the valiant efforts of some Gretchen and a lone Defkopta that wouldn't give up on his end while on my end his exploding Stompa in round 6 left four survivors so i was sadly forced to cede that he also had that one.

That left Slay the Warlord. Aun'Va was standing strong and unwounded, while his MegaBoss's Lucky Stick ran out of magic and could not protect him forever (but i mean... it damn near did).

So in the end, it was 1001 point ITC win for me (i belive thats how they score them). Squeaker.

Not surprisingly, keys to the fight were the death of my StormSurge (as usual) at the end of round 2, splattered again by his Stompa (but far from my lines which bought me time). Just keeping him alive would have given me the Maelstrom mission, because you get a point for every three wounds/HP you remove. He was however sacrificed for the greater god of positional dominance. but it did give the Orks the juice to take that part of the game.

My key was the Sniper Drone unit which was fantastically impactful. I really enjoy that unit. Stealth makes it very good defensively and the markerlight support is invaluable. The actual Sniper Drones, while not as effective against Orks per se, they provide a lot of volume against all kinds of targets. Firing that many times with rending is pretty cool. In the game before this one, their help in stripping the crazy extra AV 12 shields on the Stompa proved very important because those shields EFFECTIVELY protec it from D weapons at first. So you kinda have to strip them bfore hitting the launch button on the StormSurge.

The Fortification really helped me when round two came around and he smashed me with shooting. I went to ground as usual, in anticipation of Aun'Va's Warlord trait. Saved a lot of damage doing it.
