Space Marine Ultramarines for me. I remember walking into my local GW and seeing the Battle for Macragge on the sample table and liking the color scheme and the clean, tactical look of the Ultramarines. Had me hooked on Ultramarines for a while, and now I'm back to them.

Chaos Space Marines back in 3rd edition, specifically Khorne Berzerkers. I loved playing them, and did so with a lot of success for a new player. Unfortunately, someone stole my case containing the whole army.

For me it was orks. I liked that they were a bit quirky but at the same time tough and brutish. Also the "fantasy in space" aspect of 40k was what drew me in, so an army of space orc warriors with bikes and chainsaw axes seemed really cool to me, and still does.

Definitely Space Marines. To be particular it was the Ultramarines due to the game Space Marine, its not a great name i know but it evolved my interest to the point where i now own multiple Dark Angels models and a few Necrons.

Similar for me too. I was hooked on Dawn of War: Dark Crusade's Necrons, and when my friends got me into the tabletop, and I saw how many new toys Necrons had (Some of my favorite units are Deathmarks, Lychguard, and the Flyers), I was sooooo done.

It was during 5'th edition, My warhammer fantasy group where all moving over to 40k and everyone exept me and another guy had played 40k before so they all had armies. And I spent weeks trying to decide on who to pick, then i saw the Tau and I loved their models, and I loved their fluff, And it turned out a friend had some he could sell to me. So I started Tau. Still play them, Even if I wish they wherent so strong so people would be more intrested in facing them..

I'm an old school veteran collector and remember as a kid I got for Xmas a space crusade board game which obviously revealing the red space marine chapter which for me won me over as the hardcore blood angel follower I am today.
With a massive gap between my childhood and my later teen years I refound games workshop and continued collecting but obviously became miles better at painting....
I'm currently over 6000points but still looking for additional addons for my army.....I hardly play but am serious with my collecting

I remember going into a hobby shop when I was 9, I think, and while my family was getting something (I don't remember what), the Necron codex, 3rd edition, immediately caught my eye. I saw the models painted on the back and I was immediately hooked.

Space marines from the Rogue trader era, I purchased an old blister with 3 lead (yes lead) marines in it with kind of odd poses, if I remember right one had a multi melta pointing at the ground.
They were all painted using Humbrol enamels, with coats thick enough to obscure all the detail lol.
Then my friend purchased the rules and low and behold I was hooked, have been playing marines in one form or another ever since ( with the odd break)
|
I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples |

I think Imperial Guard caught my attention. My brother had the 3rd edition boxset, and there were some great pictures of valhallan guard battling across the snow, and I think it evoked memories of The Empire Strikes Back, because I was captivated instantly. I never actually bought any Imperial Guard before I was captured by the allure of chaos and all those modelling possibilities. Additionally, my brother was playing SM and I think I wanted something that was definitely an enemy of the SM. I've been playing chaos ever since, and am now working on my fourth army!

Eldar, back in 1987, before they had an actual army list.
When the first chapter approved book came out with lists, I jumped on Yriels raiders.
25 years later, I still had those models and played with them.
I still have the models in that range I really liked - alongside the other models for the game I liked enough to buy and paint. I just don't play the game anymore because it's not a game I want to play anymore.

For me it was Chaos. I wanted to have hard-as-nails bad-asses. In 2nd Edition, Khorne Terminators had a 2+ save on 2d6, which was about as close as you could get. Strength modified your saves back in the day, if I recall correctly. And the specific model? There was a White Dwarf advertising the realease of a Chaos Terminator with Reaper Autocannon. I started 40k for that mini. https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3161/2749897084_66215cc232_b.jpg Oh, credit where credit is due, I found this image, it's not mine.

It was 1994, my buddy Jim came over my house with a Space Hulk expansion. My group of friends were immediately drawn to this game. A few days later we went to our local hobby store and saw Warhammer 40,000... and were blown away. I bought the Eldar Codex and the Avatar that day. I still own that Avatar in all its glory. Still sporting the same paint job I put on when I was 14.
Eldar are still my primary army, with many models dating from the late 90's.

I played back the glorious days of Rogue Trader, but drifted away after a time.
It was the Imperial Guard, the Death Korps in particular, that rekindled my interest in the lore. And the lore got me back into painting, modeling, and the occasional game with friends.

What got me into 40k was necrons, me and a friend at the time went in to a GW in one of our shopping centers and i saw their box and asked the guy working there what they were, and he told me metal skeletons that dont like to die, and i was all over that, got a massive cron force now.
Recently its been more space wolves, its nice to paint some snowy battle damaged models riding big honkin wolves

The army that actually drew me in to play 40k was the Imperial Guard.
They were an army which you sort of relate to. Of all the various superhuman and technologically advanced alien factions, the Imperial Guard were just a bunch of lowly humans. I got a kick out of playing the underdog, and the fact that regimental doctrines let you make your own custom army AND have rules to match was just icing on the cake. Good times...

In 3rd edition, I started as BA. Not just because or the BARR, but because i loved the concept of DC and how they used to play.
I came back at the tail end of 5the (after a sevwral year hiatus) and saw all the new coolness they had gotten. Blood Angels. They have awesome fluff, even cooler models and back then rule of cool trumped everything. I stayed with em through 6th ed, tried to put up with their new dex... aaaaaaandd then the 7.5 dexes hit. I repainted the pauldrons and highlights on what I could use in a C:SM army and re-titled them The Champions of Dorn (using IF CTs, sometimes Raven guard due to how many jumpers I have). As much as I always have and always will love BA, they're borderline unplayable in their current incarnation in my meta. My CC army will be KDK as soon as I finish em up.

Played with Dark Angels, Chaos Space Marines, Space Wolves, Eldar, Tau, Orkz, Blood Angels and eventually the last 40k army I had was Tyranids. Now, the Genestealer Cult might be what gets me back into 40k. I miss my 'nids I think this is the first time I've ever regretted a trade I've made.
Bruce the Carnifex will always have a special place in my heart and my photo gallery.
And I'm looking at buying some of those 1st edition Space Hulk genestealers that I had. The little buggers grew on me. They've got character. With their rubbery looking carapaces and tongues stickin out everywhere and those 3 fat claw fingers on two hands.
I used mine as test models before I'd decided on what Hive Fleet scheme to paint my 'nids in (I finally decided on Kraken) and the first gribbly to get paint from my brush in years turned out an awful shade of pink and blackish blue instead of the deep red and iridescent green of Hive Fleet Behemoth. I slapped him with a #1 wet sticker transfer to label him as experiment, and failure, numero uno and moved on with my life. That poor genestealer deserved better than that. I wish I still had Number One. If not to strip and repaint, then at least to sit on my shelf and remind me that the only way to learn is by doing and to not get discouraged with improving my painting.
I'd trade most of the other crap I have now to get that army back.
Even the ugly Malanthrope and Hormagaunts that I scrubbed for hours with a toothbrush to get the globs of paint off of.
