I play CSM and IG so it was pretty awesome seeing IK, Eldar, Tau and SM get flashy new books for 7th edition.
Travelling the world right now, when I get back home I'll be moving to 30k.

Well I've been the hobby for 20 off years now....
3rd was the glory days for me, they worst that ever happened was "that kid" who fielded WD Necrons and then when Necrons arrived with their own codex. Bar that we had lots of fun with no-one really building competitive lists in the slightest (we were young ok!).
Now I feel a bit funny, my guard army just doesn't feel like it has any bells or whistles to it. We have some cool abilities but nothing that really makes us as deadly as many other factions.
That said everyone has 'feels' for the poor CSM players!

At the scale of 40k it's almost impossible to balance a single codex let alone however many codices and supplements there are now. On top of that there will always be armies that are predisposed to be a hard counter to others (i.e. DA and Tau will always have an advantage assault based armies, Psychic heavy armies will have an advantage over Tau). I have never really understood the amount of complaining from so many people in this hobby, the kinds of people that think that because their army got nerfed and now they don't always win they giving up. I'm pretty glad my local GW is the sort of place where we don't have many people like that. I just can't see how someone could take tiny plastic sci-fi that seriously. Having said that I play CSM, DE and Orks so I've never really had.

Because it's a very expensive hobby, and your "investment" into a given army can be turned into worthlessness with the printing of a single book, and it may remain that way for *years*.

I think people want to play the game with the models they love and not feel like they are the NPC army that's only purpose is to be shot/chopped off the table. While there are definitely those who can't fathom losing but I think most people just want a relatively close battle that comes down to player strategy, tactics, and the dice rolls instead of when their codex was printed and whether or not the writers gave a gak about the faction when they where making the codex.
*Warning really bad analogy below*
Poor CSMs are sitting in a gutter begging for scraps along with the Sisters while Eldar and Tau roll around in their sports skimmers drinking cristal (don't drink and drive kids) while on their way to pick up a stack of fresh updates. Guard is stuck taking the Forgeworld bus which shows up whenever if feels like it while the Ork trukk has broken down for the third time today. Nids are looking fine with their Flyrant GTS but the sad part is that they are living out of their car and lost his son doom in the custody battle. Dark Eldar and Blood Angels are the "Luigis" of their family and often times stuck being the designated drivers for when their brothers are too messed up on to drive themselves.

I picked Option 3, but I'd describe it as 'The rules are really bad right now, but I still love rolling dice, chatting with friends, and laughing at improbable rolls of 1's and 6's.'
There's a lot that could and should be done for the rules. With so much faction diversity I think it's unrealistic to expect that every faction will be equally powerful every edition, but as things currently stand it's just ridiculous.
Still love modelling and painting. And actually forging the narrative with friendly missions/scenarios/etc. is, admittedly, pretty damn fun.

The game is bad almost any way I try to cut it, but I love the background, the models, and its still the most prevalent game to find and get people into.

I love the models, I love the lore, and I love playing the game. Something about tabeltop wargaming just clicks with my head, and is something that will be with me forever. 40K has issues, yes, but I find that there are ways around the problems.
Sure, there are imbalances amongst the Codices. Sure, some armies are more powerful than others. But those can be worked around with changes to lists or figuring out some sort of handicapping systems.
My biggest issue with the game is the same issue I have with Warmachine and Hordes, and that is the players, at least those certain ones that make the game a chore. There are a few players in my local area that bring pure powerful combos and try to win every game, and suck the fun out of the experience for me. If they had just brought a different list or changed how they reacted to what happens on the game board, then it would be different. But when the players tell me "you can't do that" when I actually can in the rules or FAQ, then watch as they pull off some shenanigans, it gets annoying.
Those few players made me take a break from 40K for Warmachine (Khador), but after playing that for nearly a year I realized that the same thing was happening again: a few players taking the game far too seriously for my tastes. I am not likely to ever get to a point where I take a game with small plastic figures that seriously, so I'll just be more selective in my games and who I play against from here on.
It finally hit me back in November, 2011: The issue is that they are looking for something in the game that I am not, and that's okay. I want to roll dice and see ridiculous things happen on the table, like a Grot taking out a lone Terminator in Overwatch, or seeing a lucky Bolter shot grounding a Flying Daemon Prince. The other players want a strategic, competitive game. We are looking for different experiences from the same rules set. Neither group of players are in the wrong for wanting a certain experience. Poor sportsmanship is inexcusable, but when two players meet that are looking for two different kinds of games is.
I love the fluff and lore of Warhammer 40K. So long as it stays at a similar state to what it is now, I'll keep playing 40K in some form or another, and I'll try to enjoy the games with my friends. Life is too short to be spent being negative and worrying about things. Find the right opponents, enjoy your favored experience, and have fun!

#4 for me. Still fun but some frustrating rules and balance issues at times.
I prefer running campaign style games of late and just trying out stranger builds for fun.
