I'm at the beginning. I have the start of Necron and IF armies but want to read more of the lore before buying lots of models as I might decide my real loyalties are elsewhere! I like the idea of building a large army if I become loyal to one faction but I doubt I could stick to just one. My initial interest is in the hobby though I'm getting more interested in the game.

With me, it's kind of a combination - As I am collecting Chaos (both marines, daemons and in between) I want to have a huge faction army. An army that I can use as either one or the other, or as allies.

So it's more mono than multiple smaller armies, as I see the faction as a whole when I collect.

One problem with multiple armies is keeping the rules up to date. I don’t begrudge buying a new codex every few years, but the 2 year cycle on the last two I picked up stung. And I’m just maintaining SM and Eldar.

I’d rather be spending my hobby budget on models, not rules.
