It really feels like it should be a choice, especially if you "accidentally" roll the Master of Ambush warlord trait, where all of a sudden your Warlord (who might be a beefy close combat guy who you want to use to fend off drop pod assaults) is totally nerfed.

How does that nerf your Warlord? 'Master of Ambush' grants the Warlord and three non-vehicle units the 'Infiltrate' special rule. You can join an Independent Character with the 'Infiltrate' special rule to a unit that also has the 'Infiltrate' special rule.

I'm smelling a house rule here...

House Rules are always possible, but only really enforceable locally.

But if you want to talk about rules feeling wrong, Infiltrate is a minor matter for me. There is the little matter of every model in a unit firing at the same unit, regardless if their weapon would be effective against it not, instead of applying the right weapon to the right target. For some armies this isn't a problem, but Imperial Armies are notorious for being able to to have AT weapons mixed in a horde of AP weapons.

Makes it odd that the tau character darkstrider can join fire warrior teams what do you hide him behind the unit till your turn. A related note can a character join a unit in a transport

But he's not the sole model in a unit of many before deployment begins.

Thankfully, the ICs who natively have it are few. Cypher was a big enough headache when his 'slate came out.

Sure he can, provided that unit has at least one model with the Infiltrate rule when deployment begins. Shrike is the same way, only he can't join anything but Jump Infantry in Reserves, which is harder than Cypher's situation if you take "infiltrator" to mean an "always on" condition.

Unless the unit also has infiltrate, yes.

Can an infiltrating unit deploy in a non dedicated transport?

I was at an ITC tournament (3rd LVO), and this was sprung on me by my opponent. I rolled Master of Ambush. I disagreed and he showed me the rule. Kinda wrecked my list...

Buzzgobs Stompa with Buzzgob as the warlord. Then some Grots and Lootas. He went T1. Alphastrikes in pods, I cant assault until T2.

Almost came back. I had forgotten about that until thus thread.

Ironic that I was "Rules Ambushed" after rolling "Master of Ambush" trait.

Exactly! For some armies that trait is great, but it's a death sentence for a close combat army against Drop Pods.

Yes, but the Transport would either be in Reserves, or in the Deployment Zone, as it has to be deployed first.

Darkstrider only has Scout (like a Pathfinder).
