Cuz nobody watches or gets excited about Pixar stuff, amiright? And shows like Batman the Animated Series don't have fans who grew up on it still gushing about it to this day. Or Transformers. Or TMNT. Or...

I actually think an animated TV show could be pretty epic. It should probably revolve around a cast of both Imperial Guard (audience viewpoint, relatable folks) and Space Marines (superheroes). I think the nature of 40k might lend itself better to an episodic format.
Of course, this is pretty unlikely to happen right now, but hey, who knows what the future might hold?

Epic =/= widely seen by the general public. Take Warhammer 40,000, for example. NO matter how awesome it is, it remains unknown to the vast majority of the First World.

How the heck do you think stuff like star trek got started then? It was something new that people had no clue about and started to watch. 40k Would be kinda like that, where even if people have no clue about it they would see a promo and thing "Hey, that looks pretty cool. Lets see this."
Yes, and Star Trek was also a live action television show on an accreditted television channel, where it is far more likely to be exposed to, and taken seriously by, the public eye. I highly doubt that Cartoon Network would have been able to do the same as NBC.

There is a good precedent for adult animation, stuff like Family Guy and Archer for example. There are nice action cartoons that come from japan that are quite gory and actiony with a lot of fans. I'm suggesting that sort of animation at any rate.

Eh, no use arguing, as both of us have our own opinions. Honestly I would think Cartoon Network wouldnt touch this franchise with a 20 foot pole, but maybe adult swim or something. God knows they have worse stuff on there (Mister Pickles anyone?) but if anything I imagine it to be on Netflix or something like that.

Maybe not a full blown film but I wouldn't mind a short vid that kind of shows the tangle of red tape and paper work involved in the imperium... Kind of like the movie Brazil... But a little bit more grim dark.

IG vs Tau maybe?

"Humans vs invading aliens, in spehess, in grim dark future, blah blah"

roughly huminoid enemy aliens vs human (read: relatable) soldiers who fight valiantly and come out on top (barely).
Space Marines are hinted, not shown (in person) with most other foes again only mentioned in hushed whispers such as the Orks never shown until a later movie. Following a band of misfit IG troops and their tanks and stuff (maybe Fury 40k? lol) against an alien menance!

I think Gaunts Ghosts would be a great way to get into it since they travel so far and wide and see so many aspects of humanity. We also have a more relateable person in the form of Gaunt and yet get the other aspects of the Imperium.

I think for the majority of audience starting off too grim would be the wrong way to get the people interested in 40k movies. If even our hero is an donkey-cave I just don't think people would like it. Probably right it off as some pointless dumb action movie glorifying war.

Once we see they like it though we can do something a little more risky and look to have a movie with more grimdark in it.

Inquisitor and Guardsmen battling Heretics. Daemons and GKs show up, things go crazy, the Imperium triumphs, leave it a bit open ended so they can make another if they want.

Make revealing of a Space Marine a big deal, make them bad ass, but don't try to make them relatable or anything. That's what the Inquisitor and Guardsmen are for.

With the exception of the final battle being xenos rather than daemons, and Deathwatch rather than GK, you just described Xenos (Eisenhorn book 1).

Am I the only one who thinks this should go full Grimdark? Make a movie about the Fire Caste novel.

Introduce the main character (a guardsman), get a little sympathy going for him. Then 15 min into the film kill him off. Then proceed to kill off another main character every 10 min until the end of the movie, where the Commissar drives the ship into the warp without the shields active.

One of the best 40k novels I have read, and it really gets you into the Grimdark atmosphere. There are a few gimpses of Tau/Kroot/etc, but they only need to flash on screen briefly before the lazers start flashing.

I would watch this anyway...

Okay, that cast would be all kinds of awesome, and I think that would be an amazing project somewhere down the line, but I don't really think the Horus Heresy is the best entry point to the Grimdark. A story focusing on Space Marines would be hard for those not familiar with the setting to relate to. I definitely agree that the Eisenhorn trilogy would be more accessible story. I like Mark Strong as Horus, but he already did the voice of Eisenhorn in the upcoming mobile game, so maybe he'd like to reprise the role. He obviously has a thing for 40k.

If anyone has read the novel Deathwatch I think its a great entry point for 40k.

Its shows bits of the marines different chapters, training and coming together as a squad while also setting up the horro/type of circumstance that would lead to them being deployed to begin with.

Then the ending would seal the grimdark of the setting.

Never seen it, but I can confidently guess that it's not as good a match for GG/40K as BoB is. Guard soldiers and 40K warfare are much more reminiscent of 20th century WWII than they are of 21st century USMC and the Iraq War.

This.

Relateable characters, and covers an awful lot of ground over the course of the trilogy, so would serve as a pretty brilliant intro to the setting for anyone unfamiliar with it.

I vote Vin Diesel for Eisenhorn. No rush... he gets better for the role the older he gets...

My opinion, for 40k?

Set with Armageddon. War movies sell and what is Armageddon? A perfect war movie, and it's big enough and open ended enough to allow for some creativity in the story and still be true to the narrative and have plenty of room for a sequel or two.

The Heresy while I would LOVE to see a movie seriesmovie series based on it, I think would be suited more to an animated series of either traditional style 2d animation with Movies to help in covering the Big Events Istvaan, Calth, Terra, Mars and so on.

Armageddon seems like its more suited to a strategy game than a movie, all things considered. For the HH, agreed, some kind of series with the occasional movie would be best.

Well my theory with Armageddon (pick a war 1st 2nd or 3rd) set it around a specific battle or build up there of. Say Hellsreach Hive. There you have A Marine (probably Grimaldus or a subordinate therof) and Guard main characters and a lead character in an ork position.

It gives perfect story elements for a build up, climactic battle, and a satisfying ending. It's easily every WW2 movie ever In space. With what can be seen as a Good vs Bad theme because honestly aiming this at the General public, they aren't going to go for "Everyone is actually bad" the way 40k is portrayed.
