As long as they try to make a halfway decent excuse for running an unfluffy list, I would be fine with it. It really isn't even that hard. I know it is just a game, but I actually like the 40K lore, so if someone tries to explain their army using the lore, I am okay with it.

However I definitely do look down on people who bring cheese monger lists outside of a tournament setting. Nothing wrong with a little competition, but if it's totally immersion breaking then im out. I can't really look down at an all Eldar, Tau or necron army for example because technically those units could all be present in a single army. But I would look down at Taudar or a mix and match of different space marine formations just to get a Space Wolf Death Star with some biker libby's. You're not even trying at that point.

Yup, that's pretty much what I think, too!

I'm cool with all sorts of zany lists just so long as it isn't clearly for powergaming purposes.

I don't like unfluffy lists but I don't blame the players with them. It isn't their fault that GW isn't handling game design well.

Not simply Min/Max or spammy lists but lists that actively go against the fluff, like Necrons allied with Orks or Eldar lists built around summoning daemons. Or pretty much any force that includes a Come the Apocalypse allies.

I'm asking because I am building a Genestealer Cult/Tyranid Vanguard army and I need to find 300pts to bring the army up to 1850, so I'm looking at adding 2 Vindicare Assassins. It's totally unfluffy but there is no other formation I could take and a Tyranid allied detachment forces me to buy a *shudder* Warrior Prime.

Would you roll your eyes at someone just throwing together random forces for either power levels or points? It's more understandable if there is a lot of conversion effort to give the army identiry, for example if the Eldar were all Chaos'd up, but I'm more talking about an Eldar list simply being made utilise Daemon summoning with no work done to explain why it has a place in their army.

I would say it's all good, just go out of your way to make sure that it's not just Vindicare Assassin models painted in your colors. Make them look unique, make them look like Cultists who were PDF snipers or something of that nature.

naw, I don't even care if you have a fluff reason, but for assassins... they are there to eliminate a target and taking advantage of a ongoing battle to eliminate them. perhaps the target is beyond this battle so they are keeping their distance and ensuring the battle tilts in the favor of their "allies"

It really depends on the "unfluffiness" of the list and, personally, I'm more forgiving with certain armies.

The big Tournament list of combining DA and SW of course makes me uncomfortably angered as a long time Dark Angels player.

That being said, in terms of assassins, I've seen (and done) assassin conversions to fit multiple armies. I've seen specifically for Tyranids some fantastic eversor and callidus assassin conversions.

I've personally made for a friend of mine "Grotsassins" for him to use with his Orks that are gretchin based. The "Ever-Skorned" (Eversor), "Kantseeus" (Callidus), "Kewl-Axes" (Culexus), and "Vindigrot" (Vindicare) assassins.

I don't really mind unless you're blatantly trying to play cheese in a casual setting.

"Oh, wassat? your ultramarines are allied with eldar+dark eldar, who are running next to some necrons? Oh? Skyhammer, 2 wraithknights, 17 scat bikes, and most of a decurion? sounds "fluffy""

I mean, I occasionally run Death Guard next to my Thousand Sons (30k), but I at least have my fluff excuse

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

If anyone 'looks down' on you for daring to play something that doesn't fit fluff that's been folded, spindled, and mutilated with retcons over the years, it's a clear sign that their opinion is not worth considering. Point and laugh is the only answer.

At the end of the day, if the list is legal and at the right points that's all that should matter.

Only if it's turbo cheese and even then it's not so much a look down, but rather an "UGH fine I'll deal with this." Is eldar scatter bikes

To many unpainted models to count.

You could paint the Death Star with 2 strokes using a brush that broad.

To the OP, make the list you want. If you find people willing to play with you, and you both enjoy it, great!

If someone declines, thank them anyway and shake their hand. Move on until you find like minded players.

If someone wants to bring an unfluffy list that's their prerogative. I may not be a fan of it, but then again, it's their army, not mine.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum
