I play both. Guard and Orks both have limited viable army options. But when it comes to the Orks, the good stuff has balanced assault/shooting focus, a mix of MSU and quasi-deathstar play, and mobility. With guard, they have limited mobility, pretty much only shooting besides some blob tactics. They are a bit one-note in terms of strategy when you do them right (contest objectives with meltavets, use eeeeeeverything else to shoot and try to cause as much damage as possible).

Orks strongly center around objective based strategies, because they can rarely win in a fight. Guard also can rarely win in a fight, but they're AWFUL at objective based strategies.

Has this always been the case for both armies? I can remember when you'd drown opponents in weight of attacks with the old orks when the mob rule was better? Have imperial guard always been kinda slow and stale?

IG are pretty relatively immobile, however it can be helped in a number of ways. With some of the Mont'ka formations IG meltavets can be VERY good at objective claiming especially if you use the Emperor's Blade Assault formation in unison with the Emperor's Wrath Artillery formation. Those meltavets in chimeras will all the sudden be PE wielding against anyone within 6 inches of an objective, and if you give them voxes they make it easy to give your artillery TL. I've had some pretty good success with using the two formations and then throwing in a blob or 2 for backfield control and keeping deepstrikers/fast attackers off my artillery.

Alternatively Valkyrie/vendettas can get you the mobility you're looking for and get even better with the Emperor's Spear Aerial Formation. Even on it's own a vendetta is good for its points, most other flyers fear it.

I voted for the guard because there are many more ways to competitively play them than people think, especially if you use allies. Also because there's so many regiments it's so easy to just choose your own paint scheme and really make them your own. Just don't play them for the baneblades as baneblades aren't truly that competitive unless you're using a Stormsword or Hellhammer.

A radical thought; why not go for Renegades & Heretics?!

They're somewhat similar to the Guard, trading out Orders and being at their baseline, cheaper but less skilled than a standard guardsman.
You can however boost them up with various upgrades, such as Militia Training, Chaos Covenants, Icons, etc... And if you think that Guard can bring the horde, you haven't seen anything until you see just how many models a R&H force can throw down!

Plus you still get the vast majority of the various IG tanks, but with some added Chaos weirdness thrown in for good measure, depending on which power your Warlord chooses to worship. (ie: an Arch Demagogue devoted to Khorne gives you Khornate daemon engines, while a Nurgle devotee gives access to a large horde of Plague Zombies!!)

And if backstory/theme is your main thing, you could build the army up to be one of the many Chaos threats that are currently assailing the Fenris system, and perhaps even eventually ally in some Daemons!? (and Tzeentchian ones at that, for even more epic fluff tie-ins.)

The main drawback is that the rules for R&H's being locked away in IA:13, unless you can google-fu your way into "finding" them online.

This. This is also another excellent option and reason to play IG.

How about an alternate force of Space Wolves? Surely the codex is big enough you could play an entirely different list - self imposing some limitations.

This means you can re-use the majority of your models and build the overall force. Is there no wild/weird version of Space Wolves you could run for more of a challenge?

I should add the forum is usually biased towards orks. I mean look at the title of the forum.

With the latest version, I'd say no. They killed the most fun play style of mech vets, and it seems that taking fearless blobs of guard is the only real way to go. Leman Russes are now made of glass, so you can't spearhead a chimera rush with a demolisher any more.

As others have said, they've become very static, which made me completely lose interest in them.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Well, I'd go with DE. The models are great and the army is fast and deadly. Speed is its armor. Very different to play when compared with IA and Orks. Pure fun.
