Tyranids: Has to be HQ for our staple Flyrant though you can only fit one in 400 pts.

Other than that I would say Elites for Zoanthrope (cheap and fairly effictive Psykers(esp with Nero upgrade), Malanthrope makes most of your ground troop viable with shrouded bubble, Lictors for the unerring DS shanagans.

Nids: HQs Flying Hive Tyrant I am sad to say.

Necrons: troops: gauss gun lines on durable platforms.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

For daemons? Gotta be HQ. Between belakor, a nurgle prince, or fatey among others they just get the job done and fatey's reroll is life.

For Csm? uhmmm gotta say Csm hq for belakor, kharn, or the cabal. But id be hard pressed to spend 400 points so mauve heavy support with 2 rapier battery units with 6 S10 ap2 blasts for 450 points.

Stalwart Veteran Guard Sergeant

I'm sure I'll get a lot of disagreement from other guard players. Without formation rules. I would say IG Troops selections are the best in the codex because of how cheap they are and obsec.

Vets in Chimeras are the go-to gold standard for guard, Obsec, special weapons, BS4.

Infantry platoons allow stupid amounts of bodies to drown foes in.

For orks, it's a toss up between elites (Tankbustas! MANZs!) and heavy support (Mek guns! Battlewagons! Other mek guns!). Mathematically grots will very often earn back their points if they're used as objective holders and tarpits, but there's an upper limit to how many can be practical, and their inability to damage anything really threatening means that their effectiveness is limited.

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

For BA, elites (DC, fragiosos, DC dreads, sang guard) and HQ. The HQ slot is especialy crowded since libbys and priests are something you want multiples of. A lot of our special characters are good too.

For Dark Angels: Probably Elites because of Ravenwing Command Squad and Deathwing Knights. RWCS is pretty nasty, especially with a Darkshroud nearby (2+ rerollable jink saves can be brutal unless facing Tau or marines with Phase Form or Perfect Timing), and DWK are pretty solid themselves, especially with a Land Raider to jump out of.

For Khorne Daemonkin: Definitely Fast Attack, as that includes Flesh Hounds, Chaos Bikes, Raptors, and Heldrakes. All of these are pretty solid units when kitted out right.

For Tau: Elites, hands down. Riptides, Ghostkeels, and Crisis suits are probably some of the best units Tau can bring to the table.

For Imperial Knights: Lord of War, cuz, like duh!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Dark Angels: Elites and Fast Attack. (But only the guys in black armor)

Grey Knights: Heavy Support for the Dreadknight.

Imperial Guard: Troops, HQ, Heavy Support. Veterans in Chimeras, CCS, Pask, and Wyverns can carry the entire codex.

Tyranids: HQ for Flyrants and Troops for cheap termagants and toxin sacs Hormagaunts. Point for point I truly believe toxin Hormagaunts are some of the best assault troops in 40k.

Sisters: HQ is all good stuff with The Saint, priests, battle Conclaves, and the eternal warrior Canoness. Fast Attack for Dominions and Seraphim.

Hands down Fast Attack for Necrons.
Wraiths - one of the best tarpits in the game.
Tomb Blades - amazing value for points, every list needs them.
Destroyers - utter murder machines, no better MEQ killers in the codex.
Scarabs - volume of dice with auto wound/glance built in.
Night Scythe - only transport in the game that can drop off AND pick up occupants while zooming.
Ghost Ark - 4 HP AV13 that makes your Warriors truly undying.

My primary army is space wolves so fast attack clearly. All of our fast attack options have pretty good merit, I've even ran a fenrisian wolves pack to make double its points back against old tau.

Although Chaos Marines do have two awful HQ choices (Warpsmith and Dark Apostle) the fact that the Sorcerer is amazing and the Daemon Prince and Chaos Lord good makes up for it.

For my guard 400 points of Chimera mounted grenadier Veterans. So Troops.
For my Sisters Dominions in Rhinos.
For my Inquisition two Acolyte squads one Shooty and one Choppy Supported by respective inquisitors...

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Militarum Tempestus would have to be HQ, just something fun about being able to take entire detachments of pure deep striking melta suicide squads.

Obviously if it's the hard cover version of the BA codex, wouldn't the cover be the strongest part of it?

You get an exalt. FA has always been the best choices for Necrons

I would add, though that the Ghost Ark is not a Fast attack choice, but a Troops choice. It may have the FA symbol on it's Datasheet, but it is always taken as dedicated to Warriors.

Space wolves elites because wulfen are so friggin good.

But additionally, fast attack because skyclaws are really strong and fluffy (I play firehowlers so it makes sense!)

And honestly, Grey Hunters are quite good in my opinion too!

I think the strongest point of my Codex's are the cover, the pages rip more easily.

Thinks Palladium books screwed the pooch on the Robotech project.

Grey hunters would be in the running for best troop if scatbikes didn't exist. It's them or Necron warriors or dire avengers.

As a wolf player I always max out my fast attack slots. Generaly only one unit of thunderwolves though. Fenrisian wolves are a quick cheap screen, and skyclaws with 2 flamers and a power weapon or two are a lot of fun as well. Used to take swift claws but swapped them for wolf guard on bikes to free up fast slots. In my lists if it doesnt have a drop pod or a 12" move I find it hard to find a place for it.

For Eldar its all the bits not labelled Scouts or Banshees, and thats only because Snipers of all factions are a bit mehh and despite their cheapness Banshee just aren't Scorps
