The army really looks great, all painted up and on a proper battlefield with terrain etc.

Looks like it played pretty well too.

Having one model on an oval base and the rest on squares does slightly bother me, but it's nit-picky. Have you considered making a square base with a insert to place him in? It generally don't matter much for individual characters but it could cause a little trouble in rare circumstances.

Thanks

I am very happy with how the army played, speaks highly of KoW rules and balance that I can make a fluffy list and it can actually compete well.

Personally, I vastly prefer the oval base to a rectangular one for individuals. I brought a rectangular base to the tourney so I could place it down if there were any issues, but it never was an issue.

Game four vs Ogres is now also written up: https://mandollies.com/2017/04/08/hu...res-eliminate/

For your information, it used to be in KoW 1st edition that individual could be put on round base (you can still see many pictures of the offical Morgoth the Faceless model on a round base for exemple) because individual made facing not matter for them.

However it happened that there were some rare situations where it became a problem, especially when the charger had no facing restriction, so could charge the individual from any angle he could reach, resulting in some situations not in line with the usual charge restrictions ("what do you mean your flier can jump over my unit and charge my army standard hidden behing it from an angle that not only make the charge possible but also allow them to both kill the hero and overrung the unit ?!")

There are also a few situations where the facing matter, for exemple individual with ensnare or phalanx won't benefit from it if charged from a flank (can happen in some situations)

In your case the problem is lessened due to the fact that you use an oval cavalry base, and not a round one, so flanks can still be determined more or less most of the time, but it still opens the potential for confusion in some extreme cases.

Worth it my opinion for the improved looks
If in doubt, I would let my opponent decide.

I have posted up my experiences from the tourney for those interested in some tactical musing on my LoR list: https://mandollies.com/2017/04/17/hunt-for-the-artifact-post-tourney-tactical-ponderings/

Where you playing with the scenarios from the core rulebook ? If so your opponent took a gamble by placing 3 objectives close to each other, as you are supposed (unless my memory is fuzzy) to place the objectives before knowing on which table side you will deploy.

Also his army was really too elite, with a lots of points locked in his two living legends, Morgoth and Illona together being worth almost 600 points.

This means that he had to keep is army very close to cover somewhat their flanks, and even there you should have been able to focus on one flank killing the mummies and threathening a combo charge on the regvenant next.

Another strategy might have been securing yor two objectives while letting him turtle while still trying to do some damage with your ranged attacks (regeneration is not 100% after all) and close to the end charge will all that is not holding one of your objective in a way that you would at least contest two of his own objectives. If he couldn't kill all the contesting units, then you would have won with 2 objectives to 1 or 0.

It was a scenario from CoK book. However, it was not really a gamble. He grouped them on one flank, so no matter which side he got, he could still cram everything on that flank and take those objectives.

The three tough individuals made it very hard to engage with any power, as they can so easily mess up any serious advance. From a power perspective, I don´t think the army was too elite. It crushed all opponents with no problems, loosing at most one unit in each game. The incredible impact of those individuals + the resilience of the rest of the list should not be underestimated. From a cool to play against perspective, I agree, it was way too elite of a list.

Something like what you describe would have been a much better tactic than what I did, I describe a similar plan at the end of the report. I still think the individuals could make my life hell, but I would have a fair chance of winning or drawing on objectives.

Finally got the blog motivation to finish up the report from game 2. Also vs undead, but a much less annoying list: https://mandollies.com/2017/07/16/kings-of-outland-game-2-vs-undead/

Your link is truncated, it should be https://mandollies.com/2017/07/16/kings-of-outland-game-2-vs-undead/

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Are you playing at 2000 points ?

Because with only 10 drops your army is already rather elite, and your opponent with only 8 was starting to ...

forget it I just reread the first battle report and you said that it was at 1500 points.

Back to your battle, you make a very good point about thinking twice before taking an objective marker with you.

Also nice demonstration of using an individual hero as secondary chaff to gain a turn or protect a more important unit, the 1d6 overrun is indeed not enough as often as you would like, it happened to me too (damned ratkin, always ready to "volunteer" one of their own to die for the others)

Thanks for notifying me about the link

That was indeed 1500pts, so most armies were around the 10 drop size. My opponent´s army was a bit too elite IMO.

Individuals feel like the bane of my existence at times, especially with so much reliance on thunderous charge, they are very annoying

You're an outstanding painter. What do you have left to complete your army?

Thanks!

Not sure I will ever complete this army

I am currently working on converting up two troops of light lancers and I am painting up two troops of the mordheim kislevites as berserker type units + one more troop of kossars.

In the backlog, I have a horde of kossars, a troop of handgunners, a regiment of gryphon legion, a gryphon legion commander on griffon, a couple regiments of winged lancers, some who might be converted to Kreml guards, a war altar of ursun and some heroes.

Wow, the Ogre game you got badly hurt in large part due to errors of your part as you say, both with the artillery badly deployed and the bad risk with the blaster, but in the second one you really can say that your opponent got lucky, If I understand correctly by turn 3 his catapult had hit 3 times, so 100% the expected average.

That you did manage a major win despite that is impressive. ^_^

The catapult did have very much luck in the start of the game, which was painful and did hamper the plan, but I guess it goes to show how luck is mitigated a lot by a good plan and good play.

In the ogre game, I had a terrible plan and played recklessly, so when luck abandoned me, I lost terribly. In the second game, the plan was good and we followed through in play, so luck was just irritating.

Speaks well of the KOW ruleset

Glad I can help motivate. You should of course do your Kislev army first

I am in the same situation myself, I have 3 human side armies planned for my Kislev army, an empire of dust army + a bunch of other projects in the pipeline.
