They're useful for being there. 35 pt troop slot filler that helps vs droppods. Grots run around scoring, providing cover and stuff. Sure, if you compare them to literally anything, they're complete garbage. For example, conscripts compared to grots are like space marines compared to guardsmen. And they cost the same. But that's what we got. You still need to fill that troop slots and score the background. Also, it's hilarious when grots actually manage to kill something. Though, i haven't had grots dealing even a single wound in melee for like 5 or 6 years. Had them killing a flying daemon prince with grot blastas though.

I use them a lot. My last game they stood in front of my mek guns and scored an objective. And, speed bumped white scar bikers twice. They're nearly immune to grav weapons. haha.
And dirt cheap. They don't start killing them selves after failing a morale check either.
In larger games I just buy them to get the extra CAD slots or to screen my stompa or just hole down the table. I'm never worried about droppods landing behind my army.

The rewards of tolerance are treachery and betrayal.

Remember kids, Games Workshop needs you more than you need them.

Disclaimer: Orks are not that competitive of an army currently so any advice is based on what works in casual play, not what works against tournament lists.

In general Orks work under the strategy of using redundancy, threat overload, and using quantity to make up for a lack of quality. Very few things for the Orks looks good by itself but it's when the enemy has to deal with 10x as many of the things is when their value comes out. Honestly most things in the codex are functional in certain applications but the challenge is coming up with a setup that covers your bases and synergies well together. A bunch of trukk boys with some Ork Walkers and Ork flyers is not a very cohesive setup. An army off all Ork walkers with a void shield or an army of 10+ units in trukks can work better because there is a unified strategy they all use which makes a balanced enemy army list have trouble dealing with massive redundancy of similar threats.

Basically it comes down to
- how and when will my Ork units get into range to do their thing
- how are they going to survive getting there
- will this assortment of units able to handle a multitude of threat types
- is this the type of army list I would find fun to play

To give an example I tend to prefer a Blitz Brigade strategy where I have 5 Battlewagons that can scout. They are usually filled with Boyz, Meganobz, Flash Gitz, and Tankbustas (3 wagons have killkannons). They are supported by 3 Dakkajets. The strategy is the Battlewagons form a wall of AV14 which helps keep the Ork infantry safe inside and shooting. Turn 2 the melee Orks pop out and charge and the jets start arriving to shoot the hard to catch units, flyers, and backfield threats that the ground force can't get to easily. To note that in my list units like Flash Gitz, Dakkajets, and even the Battlewagons have a bad rap for being inefficient but when used in this combination they tend to do decently well as there is a put together battleplan.

In terms of the "best" units it's hard to go wrong with Warbikers, Meganobz, Tankbustas, and a Mega Armored Warboss with Lucky Stilk.

Orks are a good army, but I will say that they kind of shoot in the sky randomly
