They look absolutely awesome man! Both the paint scheme and the conversions!

If you care to elaborate, how did you achieved the bone look for the armor?

@Angel of redemption - Thanks! I'll whip up a post about the painting process that I have so far. With pictures!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Last post I gushed over the sheer number of different combinations that can be assembled from the Bloodreavers kit. For this post I want to talk about some of the standout bits.

One of my favorite parts is the hornblower head. The mouth is open and the cheeks are actually puffed out as if he's blowing the horn. The horn itself has a mouthpiece that actually fits into the hornblower's mouth!

Even though I say that it's my favorite part, when I was building the minis I committed the cardinal sin of not reading the instructions, and I assembled the hornblowers “incorrectly”. They're not positioned as intended and now I had two hornblowers with their mouths open and their cheeks puffed out, but not actually doing anything.

It looked a little awkward (okay, a lot awkward) so I shaved down their cheeks to try and make them look like they're just shouting. If I ever put this kit together again I'll be sure to assemble it “correctly” because I really like the idea of them actually blowing on the horns while charging into battle.

I was also quite happy with the fact that the kit included a number of left handed Meatrippers as well as the right handed versions. GW's kits are usually pretty thin for left handed options, so it's nice to see some well executed options in this kit.

One major complaint I have is that there's no clear Meatripper Axe options for the hornblowers and banner bearers. The hornblowers can be equipped with a one handed axe easily enough, but the banner bearers have no options for a one handed axe held in the left hand. Without conversions, they would have to be given left handed knives.

To remedy this, I took a left arm that was holding an axe out of some leftover Bloodreaver bits. I was able to get it to fit more or less seamlessly, but it'll still need some minor greenstuffing to fill a tiny gap or two. For the other banner bearer I had to cannibalize another extra arm and replace it's knife with the upper portion of one of the left over Meatripper Axes. Here's a picture of the results.

Here's an extra helping of goodness. After assembling the kit with Meatripper Axes, it has another 20 heads, 20 sets of Reaver Blades, and a banner and horn left over. That means that were I to get my hands on another set of Bloodreaver bodies, I would be able to build another 20 Bloodreavers armed with Reaver Blades without having to shell out for another complete box.

Looking at the listings on Ebay I found that a set of x20 Bloodreaver bodies runs at about $15-$16 USD pre-shipping. I can't think of another single kit that allows you to double it's contents for only an additional 40% of it's base price.

I have another two boxes of Bloodreavers that I'm going to arm with Meatripper axes. I could have another 80 Bloodreavers on my desk for another $80 USD with shipping instead of buying two more complete boxes for $232 USD before shipping. That will leave me with a total of 80 sets of Reaver Blades and Bloodreaver heads just begging for bodies. If I do hit up eBay I will have a horde of 200 Bloodreavers. 80 armed with Meatripper axes, and 120 armed with Reaver Blades...

Oh, and I'm pretty sure I have another half of the AoS Khorne Starter on the way from a trade with a buddy, so that means 20 more that I'm going to need to convert...

I'm pretty sure I have a problem...

Anyone want some custom converted Bloodreavers?

Not sure about the effectiveness, but a horde of blood reavers accompanied by some kickass looking HQ units seems incredibly cool!

I've played one game at a 1000 points. The army included 60 Blood Reavers backed up with a Bloodsecrator.

The number of attacks these guys were able to pump out with the Totem of Chaos key work of the Bloodsecrator coupled with the Portal of Skulls was insane.

We'll see how they do in future games, but I've seen quite a few Blood Reaver horde lists. That makes me hopeful.

While Bloodreaver units aren't particularly powerful on their own, if you've got a character nearby, they can be pretty effective. The unit I get most hassle from, though, is Blood Warriors. Those gorefists are pretty annoying!

Some excellent models here, UselessWizard. Really like your Slaughterpriests and Bloodstokers.

Update on Valkia the Bloody progress.

I was gifted a box of the Dark Eldar Scourges for Christmas. Work is going to begin on her tommorow. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures of the conversion process.

@ROTTEN_FACTORY - Wow, thank you very much! I'm flattered that you like the conversions. I've been lurk-following your work since you posted the completed mammoth sculpt.

Once the Bonelords are done, I'm going to start on a Nurgle Rotbringers army. I hope you enjoy it.

@Ynneadwraith - I'm excited for it. The kit is fantastic.

I'm extremely impressed with your conversions. The bone armor looks similar to that on my bloodbound. Mine have blue skin though.

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.

@lord marcus - Thank you! Conversions are the part i enjoy the most.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be painting these guys in various tones of dark skin. For this project, I'm more interested in contrasting light vs. dark rather than warm vs. cold.

These would look utterly stunning painted in a warm afro-caribbean skin tone. So rarely done, especially in AoS, but it would be a stunning contrast with the bone-white armour.

From what I understand it's one of the trickier skin-tones to get right, so no probs if you don't go for it, but if you don't I might just have to myself!

I'm hoping that it will look good. i think that Ynneadwraith is right and it'll look amazing. It'll be only the second time I've ever painted those kinds of skintones, so I'm expecting a lot of room for improvement.

I'm probably going to be selective about how much gore I put on the models because I don't want to detract from the red Khorne symbols.

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone. Life has been pretty busy lately.

The Good News is that I've still been able to keep up with hobby time and I've been getting more games of Age of Sigmar.

Hobby Progress:
I've started painting twenty of the the Bloodreavers with their "afro-carribian" skin tones.
I'm not terribly happy with the highlighting. It's too flat looking. I think I'm going to use a color with more red in it for the next group. I'm thinking something like a terracotta with some brown mixed in so it's not too red.

What do you think?

Agile Revenant Titan

Hmmm, I think you're spot-on with adding a little more red. At the moment it's a little yellow/jaundiced looking.

Looking good otherwise interestingly his lower abdomen near his belt seems to be a reddier colour which is a bit closer to being lifelike.

Can't wait to see a fully painted up dude. They're going to look so damn cool

Sup dude, I've just made this Exodite Hawk Queen model and thought of your idea to make a Valkia the Bloody using Scourge models.

Spoiler:

If you're looking for a more aggressive head, the Hellions kit has a few that look feminine but also have a mouth full of canine teeth so would fit really nicely

If your Valkia model still needs a shield, the current Chaos Knight box has a shield that's perfect; it has a Daemon head on the front with its mouth open and tongue out, and horns near the top. I believe it's the champion's shield. But it's perfect for Valkia.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

@Ynneadwraith - That Exodite looks amazing!

@timetowaste85 - That's actually exactly the shield that I'm planning on using.

I've been in a real hobby funk lately. I found out that my job is disappearing on May 5th, and I've been scrambling to find something else asap.

My car also blew a tire at the exact wrong time so I'm back to the bus system until I can get the rim and tire replaced.

And a bunch of other RL stuff.

All in all, RL has been a little rough lately so hobby time is few and far between.

Thanks dude!

What a bugger. Sometimes crappy stuff seems to hang around, waiting for more of its mates to turn up, and then bum-rush you all at once...

If it helps, I've found that scrapyards (probably pull-a-part or something similar in the States) tend to sell wheels and tyres significantly cheaper than buying them anywhere else seeing as they get so many of them. They'll all be used, but if it's just to get you back rolling again in a pinch then it's valuable

You're right they do. There are also Discount Tire yards that do the same thing, but they get their tires from dealerships. One of my buddies works at a Ford Dealership and they store all of the tires they replace in a shipping container in the back of the dealership. Then they pay a dollar a piece to have them removed. That's when the discount tire dealers get them, inspect them, take the ones that can be sold, and dispose of the rest.

Anyhoo, I'll be checking the Pick-n-pull near my town and the various discount tire places for replacements. The main problem is that they're 19 inch, low profile tires. Those aren't the most common in the discount places.
