Probably work

I kinda see the point of the collector's edition. I have the entire trilogy of core 3.5 D&D books in their leather covers and gilded edged. They look pretty damn sharp on a bookshelf!

Also ...I bought them for about 10 bucks each on ebay, IIRC. They were actually going cheaper at the time than the normal edition.

In a general sense, yes, its silly.

Where's the fleecing? They provide something and apparently plenty of people want it since the CE codexes aren't generally available for very long. If you had to pre-order the limited versions blind, not knowing what the difference would be, then you might have a point but people are buying them whilst knowing exactly what they're getting. If the CE codex gave you access to some in-game advantage then that could be objectionable, but it doesn't.

I wouldn't buy them - every few years I'm binning/giving away a big pile of 40K books. The only out-of-date books I keep are IA campaign books and my RT rulebook. Definitely not worth spending extra for a special one for me.

I think it's pretty clear that he doesn't know what the term 'fleecing' actually means. I think his grasp on the term "silly" is also in doubt.

No, I'm fairly certain I have a solid grasp of both words.

Perhaps you could justify why you think its fair and reasonable for a book to be $50CAD more for a ribbon and different artwork instead of insulting my grasp of the English language.

I don't think it is justified but apparently plenty of people do.

It's not like they're being tricked into buying it.

I'd get the "outrage" if the CE was the only edition, like some PC games now do. But it isn't. It's an additional option.

Some people buy stuff because it's more shiny, more exclusive than others. GW recognizes that market and offers shiny, exclusive books to those people. How does that affect you?

It doesn't affect anyone really. Most people in this thread are just mocking GW's silly business practices.

But how is it silly? It's working, isn't it?

In the business sense of 'how can we fleece our customers the most', then yes, I suppose its working in that some people will be willing to pay twice the price for almost nothing.

In a general sense, yes, its silly.

But it's not, that's my point. People want shiny things, GW offers shiny things. If GW didn't do that you'd have people complain that they don't do shiny stuff.

The only thing I dislike is that they're making stuff in limited numbers, but at least to me it seems like they do a decently big enough batch for the CE books so they don't sell out immediately. If stuff like that is available for lets say a week or two and THEN runs out of stock, that's fine.

There will always be those that want something that they feel is "unique", be it actually unique or that its just something no one they know has or is likely to have one.

First editions of novels are worth more than the later mass market paper backs, although both will go up in price when its no longer published and someone really wants a copy.

If the collectors edition was a limited numbered copy, it might justify the double pricing, but as its just a ribbon and artwork, both are hardback with the same content, seems like it should be about 25% more expensive, not 100%.
