Just finished up another acolyte!
This was one of the first finished minis that I converted back around October last year, when I returned to the hobby, so he's one of my favorites.
I'm pretty pleased with how he's turned out - as opposed to the last few, he's just a rank-and-file grunt. I decided, as no one important, he ought to be a bit bloodied and battered.
The shaven head and dented head particularly made me think of that in his case (maybe a few real-world characters I've had the misfortune of encountering...) he ought to be maybe the bloodiest of the lot. As I was painting, the scarred side of his face seemed to become even more raw and mutilated, to the point where I decided that he probably wouldn't have an eye, and that I ought to go all-out on the gore, and continue experimenting with that with him in particular.

Hope you all enjoy!

A few update shots for ya!
I've mostly finished the bases for this army now. I've tried to match them to my Black Templars - I want to be able to ally all my imperial armies, so they're all gonna have a similar Tyrant Skull desert base scheme (though these aren't done in the exact same way as my marines).
I'm also inching towards finishing my henchmen, finally, though, as they're unfinished, I've put them in the background
Once my Genestealer cultists are finished (I'm hoping I can get them done today!), the Inquisition will have my fullest attention again.

A couple of weeks ago, my trusty Panasonic TZ57 finally gave up the ghost.
I've treated myself to an upgrade - a mighty Nikon (I use their F1 as well, so I've already got a few lenses to play with) D7100, and I got a nice zoom lense for it too. I'm very much still learning the ropes with it at the minute tho, so I've been shooting as much as possible to try and get a feel for it. Unfortunately, the only time my apartment is filled with natural sunlight is at about 5 am, so I've had to grapple with low shutter speeds, shaky hands, and a t-shirt lightbox, because I'm a dummy.

As ever, thanks for checking this project out! If you've got any C+C (camera nerds pls help me), I'd love to hear it! Big cheers to everyone for their kind comments so far!

I was hoping to get the rest of the acolytes finished this weekend, but it looks like I'll be working Saturday and Sunday, so chances are I won't get any painting done.

But I finished this guy up last night - he's one of my favorites. Initially, I was hesitant to use too many admech parts, but pretty severely felt the constraint on my resources out here. This guy was probably the first I assembled with 'cybernetics', as like a test - before that I had only used the arms with fully-human hands.
I liked the result so much that a whole bunch of the other henchmen have prosthetics too. I see them as closer to civilian-grade limbs, a far cry from the augmentations of the space marines. Instead, these rust, jam and ratchet, a constant inconvenience. Some are in penance, others as a punishment, most, simply as grim replacements. I see this guy particularly as a bit of an ad-mech-aboo, though maybe he was once wealthy (or valuable) enough that he suffered a horrific injury, then was brought back, or perhaps forced to be grafted to a machine to better serve the rest of the unit.
I also got a bit braver with my micron pen, and I'm pretty happy with the results.
As ever, lemme know what you think!

Yo!

So, last night, I finished the last of my henchmen! Having spent a while (it's monsoon season here, so there's precious little else to do but hide from storms and sweat) painting these guys over the last week or so, I'm finally done.

This whole project has been a blast since I started it one rainy October night in Tokyo. A massive thanks to all the people who have said so many kind things about my painting. I started in the hobby about 3 years ago. Without getting too off-tangent, the Poser McBogus of 3 years ago was a significantly less happy, well-rounded Poser McBogus.
I still don't think of myself as a particularly great painter, but I have always wanted to better myself, and this project in particular gave me an opportunity to return to the hobby whilst pushing myself. I hope, whoever you are, you enjoy the results.

For now, this is the end of the Inquisition stuff I'll be doing for the foreseeable future.
Rest assured, I will return to this army, and, if all goes to plan, you might see my Ad-Mech and Dark Eldar stuff cropping up here and there in a few weeks time.
Cheers!

New job, new country, new Inquisitors, babyyyyyyyy

To contrast with my previous batch of henchmen, I've grabbed a box of custodes. Where my scraggly fanatic mob represent the lower end of the inquisitorial echelons, I thought these guys would make a very nice fill in for power-armored acolytes, done up to the nines thanks to perhaps a very generous patron, or a particularly fruitful bounty/raid.

In my madness, I also decided to magnetize their wrists. I feel like magnetization is a rite of passage for any aspiring warhammer modeler, and while I like the thought of kitting them out with the vanilla guardian spears, and calling it a bolter/power weapon as I please...

...the lure of melta, too? Too much to resist. I've just finished drilling out the holes, and while there's a bit if damage here and there (did I mention I'm also trying to get good at greenstuff? because I am), it's nothing I don't think I could patch up.
Here's the first of the 5. Kinda simple, but imposing and regal at the same time. Still chewing the fluff for these newer boyos over... (They probably aren't real custodes, because I like my custodes only in the palace on terra being shiny and invincible and not much else)

Thanks for looking!

Custodes? What Custodes?

So, I'm trying to get back into painting regularly, and have thrown a variety of odd-job and want-to-paint-somedays. Grombrindal, obviously has made the cut. Decided that he's an Ordo Xenos henchman, who runs about mostly hating orks, but also does a few other oddjobs on the side. He's very proud of being a Squat Slayer, and thus routinely gets very stroppy when most folks assume he's some kind of odd ginger ratling.
Looking for a bit of C+C, and maybe tips on how to paint flowing beer? Thinking of a darker yellow (I imagine it's not very dwarven to drink larger, but I feel like dark rich browns are gonna get lost here...

...and I really like larger, alright? There! I said it!) and then rakarth and and palid wytch for the foam! Also, his face isn't finished. Going for a facial tattoo, but I need to work out a couple kinks first...

Short update, mostly to motivate myself! Been a bit busy, and very ADD when it comes to hobbying of late, but I've mostly organized myself, and with cold weather setting in across Honshu, my time to prime is at it's end. Thus begins the great winter paintening.

Hopefully with these out here (especially grombrindal, who only has a few touch-ups left in him, poor, neglected little chap), I'll pick up the brush a bit more after work.

Tried out contrast on my not-custodes (now they're fully magnetized!), and am BEYOND pleased with how they look! I'm obviously gonna muck about with them a bit more, and have quite a few more details planned, but my word, they are lovely now, and it was great to get them done so fast. I'm definitely keen to try out a few more colours (ATM only have the flesh tearers red), but contrast seems to be making waves with the hobby community out here, which is interesting to note.

Anyway, take care!

More miscellany!

So, I've decided that my rogue trader stuff will also be seconded to the inquisition, and have been slowly pootling about, trying to pick up my pace for painting. Trying to keep throwing myself challenges, the latest being - camo, specifically German-style WW2 camo. I think I did an alright job, though I was torn between drybrushing (I need a new drybrush, it seems...) and mixing my own highlights (easier than I thought, but also needs work). In future, I'm planning on working camo into other armies (mostly on tanks etc.) but this was a fun little challenge, and maybe, one day in the far future, I might grab a box of ratlings to do up in a similar scheme. While I'm hoping to get a last mini in before the end of the year, I think it's unlikely, so these guys might well be it for me for 2019. Next year, I'm planning on a grand push into my templar infantry, and I hope I might be able to re-attain my incredible late-Korea momentum of 5 dudes a week...

...well, a McBogus can dream, right? I will, nonetheless, make time for the Inquisition, as I've still got a ton of minis to do, and the inquisition is always fantastic fun.

Anywho, let me know what you think! Thanks as always for dropping by!

Thanks very much, mate!
Y'know, somewhat dangerously, the camo was...

...surprisingly easy? Highlighting was a bit of a pain, and I think I'm going to need to invest in a new drybrush - and work on my drybrushing skills - but I think my temptation to use this camo pattern in future may be too much to resist. I'm already thinking of some camo orks

How do, everyone!

After a bit of a chaotic 2019, I've managed to do a bit of an overhaul, and set myself a few more focused hobby goals for 2019.

Foremost among which may be my totally-not-stodes. But chaps, I have a bit of a dilemma.

I can't quite decide on the armor.

While I'm tempted to throw gold over the red, I also can't bring myself to do it. I really like (and originally imagined) this all-red armor with embossed, rather than gold filigree detail.

There will certainly be a bit more gold - this unit will be a bit of an experiment with very VERY baby-level colour theory, so also blue gemstones and power weapons, to get that red-yellow-blue classic triad.
Opinions?

(also kinda just testing out the new macro lens lol)

Another mugshot update!

So, this is a bit of a daft experiment, really. I went to Osaka a while back, and saw gashapon Maschinen Kreiger. As a long time fan of the look, but reluctant to fully commit, it seemed like the gatcha of my dreams, and I took the plunge for a meager ¥500.

BOY! Am I ever glad I did. For only ¥500, the quality of this kit is superb - detail is crisp and plentiful, there's some articulation if you want it, clear canopy bits, and even waterslide transfers. Cannot recommend enough! 10/10 McBogus stars.

Of course, me being me, I couldn't not make it into something 40k, and so...

...Sgt. SteelBastard was born (name pending)

A quick swap to a scion beret head - of course, with a cybernetic eye! - and viola! One grizzled, hate-fuelled cyborg veteran, ready to murder some xenos. The current, plastic, unpainted part is still mostly hypothetical... I'm not sure I've quite nailed the 'dystopian 40s diesel-punk' look of MsK and the guard, and the 'medieval-zealot-in-space' of the inquisition, though maybe it won't be totally apparent until I start painting?

As for paint, I'm thinking of like a 40s Luftwaffe Messerschmidt-style grey camo, with some flourishes of yellow, and a bit of medieval-style chequerboard and insignia where I can fit it in... Thoughts?

As always, thanks for stopping by!
Hugs and kisses,
McBogus

Hey, hey, hey!

So you know how this blog just keeps filling with stuff I haven't finished painting yet?

Me either!

Been on a real building kick of late, and enjoyed trying to make this kit fit with the rest of my goons. I'm currently thinking about grabbing another box of these, along with their upgrades and another pack of flagellants, as well (ofc I'll be using skitarii bits as well), but I'm not sure. I think they match the grizzled rag-tag fanatics theme quite nicely, but I also want to play necromunda with them - I'll probably use my previously completed acolytes, too, probably as juves, because they're a bit less fancy, clothing wise. Lemme know what yo think! Hopefully I'll get to priming them this weekend, if the weather stays good!
Take care!

Think I'm getting into the swing of being a bit more productive, painting wise! Finished up this guy, I primed at the end of summer. The face was a little tricky, just because I've never painted a jawline that shape before, and I wanted him to look a bit less healthy, and more like a fusty imperial bureaucrat who spends his lifetime sifting through paper, but I also wanted him to match the scheme for the rest of my acolyte goons. I feel like his extra, functional enhancements and little gold Inquisitorial trinkets give him an air of being more important and civil than the rest of the goons, tho I'll probably run him amongst them, if I ever need to pad out bodies.

Got a whole bunch more inquisition stuff on the way, so keep yer peepers peeled!
Lemme know what ya think!

Thanks very much! Yeah, he's a bit out of my usual comfort zone, too, but I kinda fell in love with the model when I saw him - he reminds me a little of those red-robed figures in the back of Blanche's Black Templars painting. Not visibly armed, and with no very clear purpose, I remember pondering long and hard as to what their roles might be.

As a member of the ecclesiarchy/inquisition's record-keeping, I imagine he'd have to tag along on various campaigns, like those mysterious figures, an inexorable part of the train of humanity that follows the imperial war machine across the galaxy.

And if nothing else, I can always use him as an objective marker!

As for the acolytes - I love nearly every part they've released for Cawdor, and the same goes for the old fantasy flagellants. Everything just oozes character, and I can never help myself from dry fitting and fantasizing about how I'll build the next mini. Absolutely great fun figures, and I heartily recommend them to anyone who wants to give it a go. Can't wait until I get a chance to grab more!
Cheers for your comment, and for dropping by!

Continuing down the avenue of "generic human/imperial" - I finally got another Blackstone mini done - Janus Draik! I'm pretty pleased with him (or I was until I noticed the inside of jacket having little flecks of gold all over the inside... ) Lemme know what you think! He was a pretty daunting model, being essentially the centerpiece for the non-chaos, non-blackstone inhabitants portion of the set, but I think I did him justice, and got to get out of my comfort zone while choosing the colours (a little).

If I could improve on anything, it would be the fur pelt. I tried quite hard to emulate the tiger stripe pattern on the digimon Gabumon, but it didn't work out particularly distinctly. I would go back and try and make some of the pale fur a bit more pale on the pelt, but the memory of picking out all those individual tassels... the horror...

Anyway! Thanks for stopping by! Hope you enjoy him, let me know what ya think!

Thanks very much!

When I saw his fancy little eldar pistol, I decided that he would probably be more flamboyant and outlandish, so sporting a slightly garish, unusually-coloured xeno pelt felt right. I'm kind of nervously dipping my toe into colour theory stuff, so the beige pantaloons and burgundy jacket meant that I thought blue would fit nicely.

Thanks so much! Hearing such kind words about the skin tones means a lot. I think I'm not alone when I say that painting skin - especially faces - is really tricky, and something I still don't feel like I 100% have down, but It's really nice to know that people like what I've done. Cheers!

As for conversions - I've always love converting! This plog is really where I think I can let myself be a bit more freewheeling and weird with conversions - the acolytes especially are really great fun. I want to grab some more, and go ham with the whole necromunda hybridization thing I've started, though the price, and the thought of adding to my pile of shame is kinda off-putting.

That said, I'm toying with grabbing some cygor brown contrast. From what I've seen, it looks like it'll match the robes of my acolytes really nicely, and it might make doing the more boring parts of them much faster.

Next up, I'm going to try and get through a few more odds and ends from my imperium/inquisition pile, then move on to my more advanced henchmen - the notstodes and some plasma-toting stormtroopers!

Finished this guy this evening! Pretty pleased with him, too! My return to glowy eyes was a nerve-wracking one, but I think I did pretty okay!
