The GK codex actually lets you take a Nemesis Dreadknight as a Grand Master as an HQ choice that's really nice.

I finally got my Imperium 1 index back and took a look at all of the options for dreadnoughts (which I seem to be becoming obsessed with). There's a lot of choices. The Blizzard Shield on the SW dreads looks nice, the Nemesis Dreadknight looks amazing (and can deep strike), Blood Angels look like there's some interesting options. I suppose I need to wait a bit more to see what the AC contemptor has to offer.
So my question is, if you were going to make a vanguard detachment of dreadnoughts, which would you choose? Space Wolves, GK, vanilla marines or Blood Angels?
I'd eliminate space marines from the Equation UNLESS I was using forge world for a Chaplan dread. as I'd still need to take an HQ and vanilla lacks dread HQs.
over all my gut would tell me to go with space wolves and take Bjorn as my HQ.

Great, that's definitely what I am leaning towards if I choose to start with a dreadnought detachment.
I considered making a new topic in tactics, but since this is more of a casual endeavor rather than serious business tactics I figured I'd just continue here.
My latest discovery: AM super-heavy transports. That's a lot of guns, along with the ability to load a buttload of troops in there. Rolling up the battlefield with a load of assault troops is the plan, but the AM assault choices aren't numerous. I'd have to go with ogryns and bullgryns. I suppose I would make my way towards the juiciest objective, let off the big guys and let them start smashing things.
I know, I'm already delving into the ludicrous, but if I did decide to go this route, here are my questions:
The three choices are Stormlord, Doomhammer and Banehammer. The two latter tanks only hold 25 models, so 8 ogryns each, while the former would hold 13. I don't think I'd want to fill it up with ogryns (13 is a lot!), but I really like the Vulcan mega-bolter on the Stormlord, those 20 shots would be nice against all of those genestealers I face. I don't know that I would be able to make good use of the Tremor cannon or Magma cannon, although the Tremor cannon's ability to slow down units could be useful. Which of the three might serve my ogryns best?
(while typing this I realized they may come in the same kit...score, they do. I love magnetizing, so I can have all three, but the question still stands)
Am I limiting my options by only thinking of filling it with ogryns? Are there other assault options I am missing?
Inquisitors and Acolytes can ride in the tank due to Authority of the Imperium, are there any other non- AM units that can ride in the transport?
Also, that 4+ WS on all the tanks has me a little worried. What's the best way of helping those super-heavies to hit more often?

If you like Custodes who cares if some xenos players are unhappy they didn’t get the next codex release? You want to play Imperium then play what YOU like the best - anything else is just silly.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!
Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."
"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."
DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough. |

For that matter as a Custodes player (in 30k initially but hopefully FW will get around to giving me my skimmers in 40k at some point) I can tell you that the gold blob problem is entirely manageable. Strategically placed red and black panels break up the silhouette of the whole thing and leave you with something that looks much better than just spraying them gold and leaving them that way.

Please don't buy custodes. You'll only convince GW to release even more tiny pointless factions that further damage the game.
Buy some sisters.
Aren't Sisters the original tiny pointless faction?

No, Sisters were a main-sequence faction with a reasonably large/complete range back in 3rd when there were a lot fewer models, and they've been getting absolutely nothing while a lot of other ranges have been completely overhauled and doubled in size.
Alternately: Yes, they were a tiny pointless faction in 2nd, but they came out in the same publication the Necrons were released as a tiny pointless faction in, so you could call either one "the original tiny pointless faction". Or you could point to the original Deathwatch release in White Dwarf back in 3e where they gave you one Marine Veteran squad with a bunch of fancy toys designed to be stuffed into a larger list. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Or Sisters with their own pipe-organ artillery. It isn't really any better but it's much cooler-looking.

Exactly. They launched with a smaller model range than custodes. So if custodes are damaging to the game then sisters were just as bad.
I'd also argue that sisters were a more pointless army than necrons. At least necrons actually became important to the setting.

Start with Primaris marines. They are cheap and can be used in pretty much every flavor of marine. (DA, BA, Ultramarines, etc). They are even cheaper secondhand since Space Marine players are hardwired to become disillusioned with every new toy they get.
Pretty certain detachments will be in some form with 9th ed+. Outside of squats, GW doesn't seem to like removing options when they can add/sell them
