Theophony there is elevation and the dial allows movement direction to be separated from the direction the craft is facing.

I have to say I love the sound of this, and I'm another that wasn't keen on x-wing. This system seems so much smoother and tighter.

Ships look great.

I’m a sucker for the series.

Did you actually watch the video or just skim the first minute or two? They go into a lengthy discussion midway through the video detailing how they handle elevation. It's handled by a slider on the rectangular base and affects range.

As my post said I only got to watch the first few minutes as I got pulled away by family things.

If that’s the case I’m glad it’s handled. But the rectangular thing is also going to drive up the price of the game if each ship needs one.

Off to watch the rest of the video now.

Sorry, I missed that part. I'm not sure I like how they're handling elevation but I'll have to see it in practice (whether in person or on youtube) before making a final decision.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Another video from gencon that explains a bit more at times and has a close up of the rectangular control panel. The video is supposed to start at 6:46 but it doesn't look like its working here on dakka. Skip to that part to get the closeup on the control panel.

A couple things have turned me off of it, though I’ve only watched a few minutes of the trailer.

1. I think price is going to kill it right off the bat. The base is so big and has the turning dail on it which will increase the price with little to add to the gameplay in my opinion. All the cards are custom shaped, so a new range of sleeves which will be more because there won’t be anyone else needing six sided sleeves.

Personally, I'm curious if the "panel" will come with the ship or you'll only get X number in the base game. That's a hunk of plastic itself. Hopefully they'll do a few revisions on the bases once they get price quotes for productions to "lighten them up". Overall not to worried on the bases though when you consider the acrylic bases and stands for other games - BSG shouldn't be noticeably negatively affect by the base.

Sleeves may not be needed if the cards are laminated; they may also change the shape when the get to production (all the paper materials in the demo are obviously hand-printed) if the non-standard shape affects price (they could emulate BSG's nicked corners with a black border, but standard card shape)

 Theophony wrote:

2. Immersion. I can’t get into how they take a visually awesome ship and impale it on that base which is huge and bland grey on a black space battle map.

bases are just 3D prints, not production copies. Hopefully the real bases will be a little less bulky and (hopefully) molded in black

As others have stated, there is 3D up/down movement, but it's far more simplified than typical Wings of War. Higher/Lower by 1 changes the length of the range ruler, further than that puts you out of range - not 100% on the tracking.

Not sure how I like the new "dials". Looks so easy for someone to cheat. By that the other person sees what you put down because you were faster and then they could make a slide as they were putting it down.

How many ships will there be on the table? Dials look pretty big to have more than 3 ships per side.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

I'm a big fan of BSG but I'm not sure how successful this game is going to be. I think the lack of ships might be a big problem unless they're going to limit this to basically 1 self-contained release with all the ships. That would have some merit as you'd get everything you need in one go.

While the Newtonian physics stuff looks really cool I think there's a reason all of the successful and popular games on the market at the moment don't bother with it. The obvious comparison here is X-Wing and one of the reasons that game has been successful (other than the obvious Star Wars license) is how simple it is at its core. I'd love to be wrong but I think this is going to end up as another of those games that people remember fondly but nobody really plays.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Still have no idea why they went with fighters rather than fleet warfare.

Neither, one of the things I cant find now said that they are going to do the capital ships but in a much reduced scale (about 12").

Might be because there's already Starwars and (though its dead right now after SG died) Firestorm Armada and also the rumbling of Battlefleet Gothic returning - all of which already do capital ships.

Plus they probably feel they've got more leeway to add more fighters to the game in terms of style and design, rather than adding capital ships. Especially since the fleeing humans are basically stuck with mostly adding more civilian ships and having only one warship; whilst cylons can add any number of new warships they want. It's far more fitting that the humans can build new fighters and support fighter ships and such and get them into fights.
Heck in the original series most of the fights were fighter on fighter for the most part.

Well, sure, but X-Wing exists and has dozens of fighters to buy before they have to even tap into the secondary material, let alone start making things up. BSG has what, two marks of Viper & Raptors, two marks of Cylon Fighter, one Cylon Heavy Fighter from nuBSG. Then what, they start making up ships of their own? Meh, people go for licensed products because they're into the license, the more you drift away from that the less people care, like all those awful FASA pseudoTrek designs.

They might have more to compete with in terms of number of games if they went with capitals, but there are a lot of designs already, and a lot more potential "classes" of ship to make BSG versions of.

But it is what it is, I'm sure some folk will enjoy it.

Hey... only some of those FASA designs were awful! Besides, at the time they literally had only five ships to go on for the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans combined from which to base all of them off of.

As for BSG, it doesn't look much better when you're talking about the capital ships either. In old BSG, they basically only had the galactica and basestar. In the reboot, they have the redesigned Galactica, Pegasus, and a smaller battlestar from a flashback and the basestar and resurrection ship... that's about all I can recall in terms of military ships. I don't think anyone is itching to play the civilian fleet or Colonial One for the most part.

Even if you put guns on the civilian ships that's still a ship that would rather run away than charge into battle.

that said the video game is doing well with a variety of ship classes to pick from - granted they've gone well out of their way to invent new stuff.

They'll have to do the same for both fighters and capital ships for both factions even if they use both versions of the show. I don't necessarily have an issue with that as it's dependent on how far they stray from the source. If they go completely bonkers like Star Trek Discovery and their Klingon designs then I wouldn't expect that to go over well.

Having done a quick look on google the designs of most of the Discovery Klingon ships are not that bad, they keep the actual rough appearance. That said they are clearly shifting far away from the original simpler designs of many ST ships and going far more high detail - granted new CGI allows for that really easily; but at the same time I do agree that they end up losing the original asthetic.

Thing is you have to lose some of that otherwise you end up with a fleet that looks far too similar and thus quite boring.

I think it's a brave decision. Ares must be scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's a fringe IP on a tired and very played-out game mechanic by now...good luck to them?

Releases on the 31st here. Keen to hear what people think, have read through the rules and am still in two minds about it especially with how clunky it could be.

I'm a BSG fan but I can't seem to get excited about this game. As others have said, and I'll echo them by saying this needed to be a fleet based game. Then you could have had missions from the series ported onto a game table.
