I have several moments to share.
I was Playing Blood Angels in 5E tournament, first time ever, while I was still learning the ropes, 1850pts mixed list lead by Mephiston. The first match is vs. Tyranids. My opponent carefully deploys his Hive Tyrant far enough from Mephiston to avoid first turn assault... But he didn't count in Mephiston's Fleet!
I proceed to win roll-off for the first turn, and move out with Mephy, rolling 6" for fleet, meaning that I easily make it into combat with Hive Tyrant, which did not have a lash whip for some reason. This kills the Hive Tyrant.
Opponents face was absolutely priceless when I effortlessly removed his most powerful unit on the first turn. From there on Mephiston continued his rampage through his army unmatched, racking up kills worth a whopping 965pts
The rest of the tournament went south, but I had plenty of fun
Here's another story from my first tournament, this time epic times for my opponent. I'm matched with Chaos Daemons, Kairos, Daemon Princes and assorted goods.
He wins the roll-off for first turn, and moves up with Kairos to Doombolt my Land Raider stuffed with Death Company, only ranged weapon on his list able to harm it. He starts rolling...
Hit. Roll 6 to pen, glancing hit. Roll 6 to damage, -2 for glance, +2 for AP1. Land Raider explodes on turn 1!
At this moment I noticed we forgot that Night Fighting was in effect, and my opponent was very sporting and agreed to do it over, since that was pretty much all he had done so far. He starts rolling again...
Passes Night Fighting check of 18" or so. Hit. Roll 6 to pen, glancing hit. Roll 6 to damage, -2 for glance, +2 for AP1. Land Raider explodes on turn 1! Again!
The rest of the match went pretty horribly, Mephiston getting gangbanged by two Daemon Princes, etc.
Just As Planned, the match
Meanwhile, my friend over at another table passed all 21 of 5++ saves for his biker nobs vs. genestealer horde - with
GW dice straight out of box, so no chance of weighted dice.
Again playing Blood Angels during late 5E in a tournament. 2k pts, Mephiston, Dante, Sanguinary Guard, Priests and ALL the assault squads I could get, always starting with just Mephiston on board, rest coming in with Descent of Angels.
I had felt a bit funny the whole day, but decided to hit the tournament none the less. I was on roll, beating Loganwing and some other pretty good list. Only the final round remaining... vs. Dark Eldar skimmer hell feat. Urien Rakarth and his grotesques.
Final mission was kill point mission, meaning loads of potential to score from his
MSU army. Board has basically no
LOS cover, and only a few tiny patches of area terrain, so the match would be absolutely brutal.
He deployed almost to the edge of his board, clumped up. I was able to teleport in Mephiston to the middle of the board due to mission special rule. The rest of my army comes down, bolters, meltas and flamers blazing, raiders, ravagers, venoms and dark eldar falling left and right. They return fire with massed splinter, blaster and lance fire accross the board,
FNP saving from the worst of the massed shots, but the heavy weapons really took their toll among the space marines. Every turn both sides take massive casualties, but the glasscannon nature of Dark Eldar is showing.
The brutal massacre goes on to the 6th turn... All I had remaining of my army was one Sanguinary Priest and one Assault Marine Sergeant, at the brink of getting tabled. To my luck, the match ends to the end of turn roll, and I reap a massive victory with kill points!
In the end I ranked in 2nd place, losing 1st place to a better painted army, although I got the most score from the actual tournament missions. BUT! The 2nd place prize was a Contemptor Dreadnought, and I ended up getting just what I wanted. Too bad about that 1st place trophy though. Oh well.
Also, I found out the reason why I had felt funny the whole day. I noticed I had 39*C high fever when I got home. Apparently I'm an unparalleled general when my head is spinning!
Later during 5E, I'm having a practice game with the same orks player friend mentioned above. 1,5k pts, Blood Angels vs. Orks.
I have Reclusiarch backing up Death Company and
DC Dreadnought in Storm Raven, putting well over 50% of my points in one basket, backed up by some minimum Assault Squads in las-
plas Razorbacks.
He went Biker boss+Biker Nobz, 6x30 boyz and Boss+Nobz in a trukk, simple and effective.
Things start off pretty standard, Death Company and dreadnought clashing with the Biker Nobz and Boss...except he is unable to cause any casualties. He fumbles his attack and wound rolls, and what few get through are stopped by power armor and
FNP.
The fight is over soon as the bikers are routed, and from there on, the match is a one-sided steamroll for my Blood Angels. All he managed to do to my units during the entire match was his final standing Nob knocking out my
DC Dread's other Blood Talon
Then the rest of the orks were turned into a green mush.
We agreed that it was probably the most canonically accurate tabletop depiction of Space Marines vs. Orks.
Even to this day, he is slightly embarrassed of that battle, but gladly tells the story of how I seem to steal his otherwise unbelievable luck with dice whenever we're playing on opposing teams.
And then there was that one time, during a 6E Apocalypse match, 9000pts per side, when my Aegis Defence Line's Icarus Lascannon finished off the enemy's Stompa with its AI targeting (BS2), after the R'Varna of my team's Tau player had unleashed a crippling double-volley on it.
