I believe that was the case at the time yes - though rolling out an international website that is linked to central updates and a warehousing system is likely never going to be dirt cheap it did have an insane sounding price tag on it (I can't recall the value just that it seemed way in excess for a website).
That said often as not if the website works well enough then there just won't be incentive to add more money after bad in reworking it. Plus many of the AoS complaints are at least tied to how the game is organised rather than the website engine itself.

More like someone raised a scrappy little kid from a dead corpse. WHFB was showing up at least event than Mantic whose system was a direct ripoff of WHFB. When your clones outsell you, there's very little hope.
Of course that conveniently forgets that when aos design started fb was top3 game seller and sales dropped when there was barely any releases for fb. Funny that. No support leading to no sales when it's new kits that sell most(kits sell most of their sales in lifetime in first few months of release)

The number I had in my head for it was 3million though I still boggle my mind that a website could cost that much! Methinks that must have been a very painful series of meetings that came after that bill! Though must have been equally painful for the ones that led up too it too!
I just can't see how that number was reached for just website design. Even integrated stock systems don't cost that much! I could understand it if they also rolled the price for all the photography into it; but even then GW does all that in-house and had it al done before the new site.
Sometimes its easy to see where money goes in a project even if the numbers are big, but yeah millions on a website store front just sounds wrong unless anyone with any knowhow on that market can enlighten us?

Could've been something to do with tax. If they have such a big expense they might've been able to work it in a way that they were technically operating at a loss for tax purposes or something.

Going back to the original post, I suspect that many folk browse with no intention to buy. Organisation does help here.
I suspect very few people go to the website to buy something, and then don't buy because of layout.

It was nepotism the company doing the web site was run by kirbys wife.
Those two were milking the company for every penny even as they ran it into the ground.

That explains the choice of contractor but not the price tag. I find it highly unlikely that one man could authorise such a big spend in a publicly listed company, especially when it's money going to a company he has a vested interest in. He does have to answer to the investors. If he authorises such a seemingly excessive expense to a company owned by his wife he opens himself up to investigation for embezzlement or other action. He at least needed to have some way to justify the expense.

He was ceo and majority share holder who stacked the board with yes men, and the shareholders Arnt gamers they don't care what he did because he paid large dividends out, at one point he even took out a loan to pay out the dividends.
I've yet to hear from anyone that works in web design that thinks the job should of cost more than 400k, most say more like 200k.

Asdie from this, which is rather annoying, I honestly can't say I find the website to be a "mess"
I have no issues navigating it or finding what I am look for at all.
My biggest complaint is that GW outright stops selling some kits sometimes.
