Scenario 1: My years of hand to hand combat training versus a gretchin, which is often protrayed in fiction killing people with years of hand to hand combat training. I'm dead.

Scenario 2: 4 years of Western Martial Arts training with everything from Spears to Claymores versus a gretchin. Still dead from the creatures superior strength, speed and numbers. I'm dead.

Scenario 3: I have vastly superior range to any 40k weapon, given tabletop ranges. I do not, however, have the pentrating power as it routinely takes a 75 milimeter explosive rocket to kill even one of these things. I'm dead.

Scenario 4: I open fire at three time's the gretchin's range. I focus on one after the other and wound several before they club me to death with their pistols. I'm dead

on the forum. Obviously

Wait, what? Are you confusing gretchin with orks? Gretchin are much weaker than humans.

In game, humans have T3 S3. Gretchin have S2 and T2. You can probably swat them to death. If they can get the drop on you though you might be in trouble, because they have sharp teeth and will go for the throat or ankle.

You don't need a 75mm rocket to reliably kill one. Once again, that's an ork. Any small arms fire will do against gretchin. There's only 1 gretchin too.

I was using Black Library fiction as a reference point. As to the particulars:

* Gretchin successfully charge and kill guardsmen in hand to hand combat, they are described as being faster than a human and those stupid little knives are peircing flak armor. While you can shiv your way through a bullet proof vest, armor plates is another matter. On a side note, who the hell thought GLASS chainmail was a good idea? Dan Abnett does!
* Guardsmen (in pretty much every book I own that includes them) has an effective range out to maybe a hundred meters.
* Space Marines seem to have similar effective ranges, but one shot gretchin and Orks with nearly equal ease. Strangely, Eldar can take multiple bolter shots. I have yet to find an instance of a guardsman surviving a bolter round.
* Bolter rounds are described as being roughly 75 milllimeters in width and are always described as explosive (and sometimes as armor piercing)
* Guardsmen have melee training. I can brag about my time in the ring, but even in my hayday I knew that you didn't just invite military vets into the ring and expect them not to know how to use and defend against knives.
* Gretchin, and snotlings (outside of some wierd bits in the Prophets of Waagh) are described in stupidly large numbers and this scenario assumes you are on your own.

I haven't even gone over the other various Xeno forms.

Jurgen took a bolt to the head and made it out okay, tho he did pass out, he was wearing carapace armor at the time.

I think there's a stealth bolter round that isn't explosive mentioned somewhere but I can't remember where.

I'm guessing Rogue Trader has finally broken the rule, but I thought regular human's were like S2 T2, and Guardsmen are incredibly fit and well trained most the time, making them stronger

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.

I’m probably dead in every scenario vs a anything. Having a gun doesn’t mean a lot when the last time you fired one was half a lifetime ago, and I have no training in melee combat.

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

Bolters are described as being .75 caliber, which is roughly 19.5mm, its still gonna wreck you to be sure. But 75mm would be them hauling the cannon of an AMX-13 or a Panther around.

To answer the question, presented by the thread Im pretty much dead in any scenario vs something that isnt a human, or a grot on its own. Grot in a pack, dead. Solo Termagaunt, dead they are just too fast and vicious by nature. Sure there is a chance to get it first, but its slim.

Most adult humans should peg in at S3 T3 - the range inside a single stat is pretty broad. Astropaths are S3 T3, and they're generally depicted as fairly weedy.

I would fancy myself being able to kill multiple humans who are unarmed if I had a ranged weapon of any type and had to hand I think I could take another human on. I've been in the military a while so hopefully I've learned something
