These rules are really outstanding. Mind if I appropriate them? How has the list worked out with your campaign so far?

Just an FYI, there's an official army list in this month's Wargames Illustrated for North Star's Frostgrave Snakemen models plus some dino themed monsters.

Feel free, thats why I shared it. Adjust as you see fit. They are based on the dwarf list and the barbarian list for the most part, plus the knight unit from the knight list.
It has worked out pretty well in my games. I hope Rick gets around to getting a warriors list put in.

Thanks, auticus. I agree with hoping Rick gets the warriors added in. I have more than enough minis to make two barbarian warbands. The warriors look a little overdressed in the barbarian warbands, but the grandkids don't seem to mind. My 8th ed. warriors don't look nearly so much like drag queens as some of the GW warriors and it is good to have a chance to use them again.

I picked up the book based off this discussion. Only heard good things about the rules sets in the past, but never liked the settings up til now.
Loving the little intros into the races, really lovely conversational style of writing. Bit sad there are no lizardmen though! Must check out Wargames Illustrated this month and see what is going on.

From what I understand, the lizardman list is coming, the snakeman list is different. It was done specifically to promote a snakeman line of models.
There are a few lists enroute this year.

There is also a free to download Samurai list on the Warlord Games website as well.

Auticus, what size army list and what is the format for your campaign? What is the largest battle anyone has played and how did it go?
Even with terrain a 4x 6 table with four competing 1000 point barbarian armies and me as moderator with a randomized gnoll army the table didn't seem too crowded for the rogue beast scenario. I am using skirmish trays to move around 10- and 5-man units smoothly and it seems to work well.
I only have to find a wooly mammoth with a howdah to complete the barbarian army. Any ideas - looking at Mierce and Shieldwolf (pricey) and Westwinds (Dwarf Wars-but I can't tell size from their site)?

The game was tested at 1000 pts and thats the level I enjoy. Its not overly large, can get done in a decent time, and multiplayer games are about the size of old whfb games.

Just a quick follow up. I played 2500 points of spangly, shooty elves with 2 ballista, 40 archers (half rangers) and a very hardy mounted lord with guard.
Many berserkers died that day, their stupid general couldn't sprint them across the field fast enough nor roll agility or break tests or magic. Even the medium horse couldn't get across..
Basic first scenario meant 38 inches of hard slogging. The two elfen boys on the other side of the table were delighted however at murderizing grandpa's troops. Always a silver lining.
Time for more archers, spears, rock throwers, mammoths?

As a big fan of Dragon Rampant I'll have to check this out. The Bolt Action system does seem like something I'd like.
Glad the game isn't about list building, but more about a player's actions.
The great thing about fantasy is that the miniatures can be used in a bewildering number of systems, so it is great to know that old models can have a long lease of life and fight over many battles.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused. |

Ooof! Charging across an open field into a rank of elven archers and ballistae just doesn't seem like a good idea!!

Auticus - have you played elves yet? Spangly and shooty and 2 wizards can be very unpleasant especially at 2500 points. I had so many units of marauders (barbarians) that they were stacked 2 units deep in some parts of the 5" deployment zone. I even shorted myself several units because my opponents having fun was the goal, elves are points costly, and kids....
Ran 2 full units of warhounds on one flank, 2 full units of medium cavalry including chieftain on the other flank, a line of berserkers and warriors sprinting up the middle....a BIG line. It looked great, then I started rolling dice...
Sprinting under a hail of arrows seemed like a good idea to get stuck in but agility 5 and pins and failed order and break tests and useless wizards...yikes! The elf boys murderized me.
I'll never get to them to play another warband, but I gave them the elves so it's all good!
Automatically Appended Next Post:
stonehorse - I heartily concur with everything you wrote! I was going to teach the boys A Song of Blades and Heroes, then I picked up Warlords of Erehwon at the FLGS I visit on occasion and that changed everything. I don't recommend 5000 points on the table at one time necessarily, but I definitely recommend the game.
pancake - 40 archers, 2 ballista, and 2 wizards can be annoying, but the grandsons had fun and it was a good challenge. Sprinting and making the archers reroll hits is almost a necessity but try not to fail the agility test, try not to fail the break tests from wizard lightning, try not to accumulate too many shooting and failed agility pins before combat....
Check out the stats for mounted spangly elf lords and spangly rangers and for elf archers...wicked!

I have not. My area is very squirrel squirrel squirrel. Our campaign lasted about two months. Now we're doing SAGA Age of Magic, and then AOS will be after that.

Well, just ordered this and 5 boxes of Northstar plastic Gnolls... That should give me enough for a sizeable force.
Now I just need to find an opponent.

Well done! Don't forget the chariots and hyenas, and a gnoll rock thrower will provide comic relief...

My pals and I have been having a blast with this game, it’s great. We’ve been running bigger battles with monsters recently too and not only does the system cope fine with its better than AoS for it. I urge any WHFB vets who don’t like AoS or associated GW shenanigans to give it a go, we haven’t looked back.

We’re about to start a conquest of nowhere campaign with it, have expanded the magic and magic items, and have used the points calculator to make all the WHFB units we know and love. It’s great to have actual freedom to make what you want in it.

Game looks pretty good. I've always found Bolt Action to be a pretty solid rule set, so it doesn't surprise me that it would adapt well to fantasy.
I actually like the lack of established lore, as it allows me to fill in the gaps on my own.
I'm always looking for a decent warband game, so will probably give this a look.
Thanks for the write up!

So what is the rough model count of a WoE game... namely is it an AoS replacement or a WHFB replacement?
Someone mentioned tools to stat up your own units... is that a formal part of the system? Does it let you create genuinely diverse combinations of special abilities, etc... or is it more just tweaking numerical stats? In either case, how balanced do the units tend to turn out?
Is there only the one book for sale, or are there already supplements?

Well it’s intended as a warband size game, maybe 30 - 50 models which gives around 1000 points. However I recently played a 3 way 2000 points per side game and it was awesome, the system scales great and keeps you engaged due to the dice draw mechanic. We’ve all just gone for it, playing with big monsters is fun as they never dominate and can even end up charging off straight away if the dice decree it.
The one cap on scale is unit size. They top out at ten models, so there’s no clashing of big chunks of troops in ranks. It’s more like a big brawl of smaller agile units, I always picture the battle at the start of Highlander in my head.
The points calculator takes some getting used to, but allows a lot of diversity with all the special rules available. It’s made by the creator so is official in that sense, but really the game isn’t really too concerned with officialdom, it expects some level of restraint with the points calculator and not just making mega beasts. An overly competitive crowd could quite easily run riot with it.
Only one book at the minute, there’s quite a lot of fan made stuff on the FB page, and Rick Priestley is releasing new army lists every now and then.

They are standard crunchy wargame fare. It will take a few times playing before things become second nature.
So it depends on what your threshold for easy is. I have played Advanced Squad Leader, so games like this are very easy in comparison, but for someone who is only used to one page rules or games like AOS, the complexity level will be a lot higher.
