Plastic doesn't use rubber molds, though.

TERRAINCRATE 2 LAUNCHES 8pm (GMT) FEBRUARY 21st
Great news Terrainspotters, the TerrainCrate 2 Kickstarter launches 8pm (GMT) on February 21st. We're expecting crate things from this campaign and there will be a special 24-hour early bird discount - so make sure you don't miss the launch.

We want this Kickstarter to fund hundreds more pieces of detailed plastic for your RPGs, fantasy wargames, post-apocalyptic skirmish games, even historical battles. Below you can take a sneak peek at the sets available from day one.

Bleakwood Hall is a spooky, gothic setting - perfect if you want a haunted mansion, a Cthulhu cultist's layer, a mysterious wood for your fantasy games or just need some fancy furniture to kit out your king's castle for D&D. Bleakwood Hall contains four sets - Gothic Manor, Servants' Quarters, Grim Woods and Bleakwood Mausoleum.

Campbell Heights is the perfect Crate for post-apocalyptic games, the Walking Dead: All Out War, modern skirmish games and there's a set that's fully compatible with Here's Negan: The Board Game. Campbell Heights contains four sets: Two Trees Mall, Crystal Peaks Campsite, Survivor's Stronghold and Abandoned Office.

Need a Crate for your historical wargames, a bustling market square for RPGs, a simple house for your adventurers to rest in? Well, look no further than the Bellevue Square Crate. This contains the following sets: Market Day, Bellevue Hospital, Cosy Cottage and Peaceful Park.

Same way as any other spin cast miniature, use a rubber mould.
PVC models are made using metal molds - PVC itself is soft when coming out of the mold - allowing minor undercuts - at the expense of warping.

That said, popping PVC models into boiling water makes it pretty easy to get rid of most of the warping.

With Terrain Crate I the only models I had real problems with were the wagons - would have been much, much easier if they had not been assembled before shipping.

Binder clips proved to be an indispensable aid for straightening parts - and can also be used as handles when dipping the models into the hot water then the ice water bath.

The PVC can be modified - adding more or less plasticizer being one of the major ways - the soft Bones PVC from Reaper and the harder PVC used in Terrain Crate being examples, as is the plastic used by WizKids in their Deep Cuts lines. *EDIT* Affecting detail as well as how flexible the model is.

Yeah definitely a piece you're better off assuming will be unusable.

Looks more like pieces that will be easy to fix when/if they are warped.

Unusable only if you have no patience or desire to dip the thing in hot water.

Large binder clips and boiling water will do the job quite nicely on the fences, and take maybe two minutes per fence bit.

While the long skinny bits are more likely to warp, fixing them is easy. Things like the candlesticks, the market stalls, and the fences are easy.

It will be larger, multipart models like the wagons where the problems really kick in.

Have I mentioned that the wagons in Terrain Crate were a pain in the butt? And the smaller WizKids wagons are exactly the same PitA for the exact same reasons... Those took about ten minutes each to fix, and required multiple dunkings. Clip, dunk, clip, dunk, clip, dunk, sometimes moving the clips along a longer piece, a small amount at a time, with awkward warps in awkward places, making fixing it awkward....

The guard box is more worrisome than the fences, at least to me.

That said - I was generally happy with my Terrain Crate toys, and have used them a lot. We would have ordered more of some of the sets - but the one we are most interested in is unavailable, right now.

Some is likely to be used in more permanent installations, when we get enough of it. (We need more Library. A lot more Library. My wife has Mordheim terrain plans.)

But I will be spending another $3 on a pack of binder clips, secure in the knowledge that we will need them.

I must have been lucky, I didn't really have any issues with warping in the pieces I got from the first KS. But I think I got pretty much everything I need the first time, nothing so far in this new one that I really want, but I'll see how it they unlock anything I need when they start adding stretch goals.

This is PVC rather than HIPS so there is a certain tolerance of undercuts. The worst undercuts will on previous experience be handled by making the pieces multipart and having them pre-assembled before shipping.

Quality concerns aside, what are people's general concerns with Mantic? ive seen a few mention product appearing in stores before backers are getting things. Does mantic have a poor track record?

Mantic don’t guarantee backers will get their stuff before retail they even cover it in the FAQ they do say they hope the savings you get from KS will offset any delay. There was some complaints that the retail special offers for Vanguard were cheaper than KS prices but people weren’t taking everything into account they just saw a cheaper rulebook but didn’t factor in the dice and tokens and bits that also came with the KS. You will sometimes get stuff cheaper retail but that’s largely if you just buy a few bits through KS the bigger bundles and pledges do give a considerable saving.

They sometimes deliver late - they originally prided themselves on hitting delivery dates but they cut corners to do so and eventually realized people would rather late than sub par.

You know what you’re getting with terrain crate so there’s unlikely to be any surprises or last minute material or design changes it will be PVC so they won’t switch parts that should be HIPS or resin to PVC last minute.

Will I receive the Kickstarter products before the game is available at retail?

We always endeavor to deliver the Kickstarter pledges before the game is available at retail, however in exceptional circumstances the pledges will deliver slightly after the retail launch. However, we try to avoid this as much as possible!

There are always some hiccups and often it feels like Mantic just says "screw it, good enough, send it to print" when 90% done and so most things are frustratingly close to being awesome but fall short.

But you can be sure you'll get your 5 lbs of miniatures for $100. They have something like a dozen successful campaigns under their belt.

They always try and sell you on the 'savings' over retail.
If your LGS pledges for retailer levels on projects, then don't bother backing.
My LGS has the KS versions of the previous Terrain Crate 2 months before backers in Canada got them.
Canadians also ended up having to pay import taxes and fees for the post office to release the packages.
Those were reimbursed a month or so later, but one had.to pay first, or you wouldn't get your stuff.
The LGS was able to sell the KS crates for $25 less than the KS price and without the shipping cost.

Because my LGS backs at the retailer level, I don't bother backing any Mantic projects. The LGS gets it faster and sells it for much cheaper. The total savings on one crate was over $35 at retail vs. KS price.

Make of that what you will.

A set I’d definitely be interested in depending on the full contents. It would be great to get cheap giant mushrooms (tree sized) if that’s even been considered? Need to do a mushroom forest for my Gloomspite Gitz and the resin ones out there are expensive.

Thanks for this, my FLGS will be backing this one so that is definitely something of interest. Appreciate the insight!

Mmmm nothing really grabbing me either but put in an EB just in case.

Just checking some figures the £18 sets retail for £25 and can be got for £20 from discounters. The retail crates are £60(£48 discounted) but don't contain as much as the KS crates 70 odd pieces versus 90 odd plus any stretch goals added.

And a video of the terrain

Looks like a good haul for gothic, mythos and modern games.

I want a couple grim forest sets for sure, probably the campsite and some modern furniture too.

You got your wife in a Terrain crate?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I don't play anything that would have use for these items, but I think it's phenominal that Mantic is doing it. I hope it creates more interest in games which would use this stuff. There's so much that could be done with it.

Good, I'm pleased they are using a sturdier PVC for this one. Hope it will make the small pieces less bendy than the first. They listened, so I'll give good credit to Mantic where it's due !

It will be nice material for lots of different settings. Still not my target, since I'm more focused on fantasy settings, but I'm glad other people will find what they're looking for with this one.

We'll see what they will be adding afterwards.

I don't like the set groupings, mostly because I don't want to spend a fortune and each set of 4 contains 1 set I love and 1 set I don't care about. Hopefully the stretch goals will cover enough bits to mean I can get all the stuff I want.

Weird there isn't a super-forest set with just trees, you'd think people wood happily buy 4 sets of them.
