As someone who occasionally flirts the idea of buying into a Mantic game, I simply cannot get past the abysmal quality of most Mantic miniatures. I sold my Dungeon Saga Kickstarter the day after I received it I was so incredibly underwhelmed by the general lack of quality in the materials I received.

I've heard good things about their games/rules/mechanics...but if having Mantic miniatures was a requirement, I'd never play a single game. A couple times a year I start compiling a shopping list to start KoW, etc...and never once has that shopping list included Mantic stuff. :(

I love Kings of War as a game. What i love also is that no one requires you to use Mantic miniatures. My army is Shieldwolfe, Footsore, Bad Squiddo and a few others. A major part of my army building fun is searching for the figures that fit my vision for my army.

The game itself is a lot of fun, and it's the best community i have been a part of since my old WAB days.

However, I do quite like some of the new Mantic miniatures and have some ordered. I got them because I liked them and also because I want to support Manic - not because it is 'required' by the company or the players.. Mantic does things the right way, and after the WAB debacle effectively killed that game and community, I really appreciate it.

Don't let your opinion of their miniatures put you off from playing their game. They have produced a good game that isn't simply a vehicle to sell the flavor of the month miniatures. Play the game a few times and decide if you like it based on play, not their figures.

Since around the time of Vanguard they have consistently been releasing great miniatures, so I would definitely consider buying a whole Mantic army.... if they didn't abuse monopose or had those price hikes.
Stuff like the new Drakon Lord (at the end of the post) https://mailchi.mp/manticgames/newsletter-july14-971103 is reaaally cool. Great progress in a decade since the first elves were released.
It's up to them to know how to gather customers considering all the competition. At least the rules seem to be selling fast.

Despite my issues with prices, I am very happy with the quality of GW's plastic models. I've never been one to use third-party models because I feel like I'm buying is wrong.

For Kings of War GW miniatures would be third party miniatures.

Oh, for sure. I'm simply responding to the nature of the thread. If the community shifted to "no you should only use Mantic" it would really hurt them, as their miniatures are generally lacking. Generic fantasy miniatures are actually having a damn good time right now...so many excellent board game minis, alternate companies, cheap BONES monsters, etc. Heaps of possibilities.

I'm building a massive undead force for KoW at the moment.

Bought their mega undead army and the elite undead army boxsets and am very happy.

I currently have another regiment of Wrights, skeletons, ghouls and a horde of zombies on the way. So I'm investing quite heavily in the Mantic miniature line.

Saying that I also got the Warlord games skeleton army box set of the old Wargames Foundry plastics. These were fiddly to make but in my opinion are the best skeleton plastics on the market at the minute. Cheap for two skeleton hordes as well (80 miniatures).

A lot of my character models are Alternative Armies - Vampire lord on dragon and lots of others.

I plan to get myself a lot of centre piece metals from the old Grenadier line from Mirliton in Italy for Christmas. Who wouldn't want a skeleton mammoth catapult or a skeleton rhino bolt thrower in their undead army?

Also have my eye on Fireforge games new undead line. Will pick up another horde of zombies from them at some stage as well.

Between the old and the new 28mm fantasy has so much choice. I have about a dozen different companies I would order from in the morning if I won the lotto.

Variety is the spice of life. Anyone who limits themselves to one company is in my opinion badly limiting themselves.

"Jewel like quality" - LOL. Most stuff looks great from 4 or 5 feet away with even a semi-decent paint job.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
KoW itself as a game is fantastic.

My group used to heavily modify old editions of WFB to try to make it play faster and to balance it better. Lots and lots of work. Attracting new players was near impossible with the price of GW miniatures. We used and pushed proxies for years to try to limit the expense for starting players.

A game campaign using a modified Mighty Empires would take half a year to finish. We can now easily fit a bigger more exciting campaign into a month or two over a few sessions. You can easily get three KoW games played in the time it would have taken to get one WFB game played. And although WFB had movement and tactics I find KoW a much deeper game in that regard.

I would recommend anyone interested in rank and flank (block game) fantasy to give it a try.
