I have a plastic storage box tucked in a closet that holds all my paints, brushes and hobby equipment, a WIP shelf, Battlefoam BFL trays under the bed for finished stuff and a P.A.C.K. 720 to carry them around in.

I'm currently in negotiations with Mrs. Excommunicatus for a Dettolf from Ikea.

Most of the time my miniatures all live in display cases in my man cave, and I've got a desk that's set up as a permanent painting station, so I don't have to store my paints away. I've got a big office-type bookshelf in the corner with my rulebooks and all my boxes of unbuilt stuff.

For transport, I've got magnets glued underneath the bases of all of my models. I haven't quite figured out what to do with the tanks with no bases yet, but I've not needed to take them to many games so it's not really mattered. I transport stuff in a couple of steel cantilever toolboxes, just pop them in and let the magnets hold them nice and secure.

I'm contemplating getting a big really useful box and epoxy-ing some steel sheet in the bottom to handle knight-sized models.

GW cases for storage, card boxes + bubblewrap for transport - unless the army coincides with the case contents :-)

The card boxes fit easier into a back pack, which has room for books etc. Cases have all been 2nd hand via t'bay, some KM foam to suit larger models.

Although, in the interests of Full Disclosure, my Daemons are currently in take-away boxes with bubblewrap - also easily back pack-able.

I use simple $1.99 plastic cases from my local craft store - they hold 20 to 40 infantry figures per case (not padded), and scrapbook cases for bigger figures.

My Tau are in a fishing tackle box....

It never ends well

if it's been painted I want to see it so it's in a glass display cabinet (or scattered around on mantlepieces & bookshelves gathering dust... I need another cabinet & the space to put it)

if it's not painted it's in various plastic & cardboard storage boxes hidden away as best I can

and if it's in the (slow) transition between assembly starting and painting being finished its somewhere in my work area

which is a real mess with layers of stuff from years past, things I've lost the inspiration to finish, stuff where somethings gone wrong and I haven't worked out how to fix it or just put aside where something shinier comes along... but things do get picked back up, dusted off (literally) and work restarts often enough that I don't despair about the state it's in

Currently just upright in an otherwise empty box.

Working on making a mobile storage for them though, using 1.5" acoustic foam. Relatively inexpensive and should fit most of my models easily enough, with perhaps a little cutting.
