I'd go 30k Leman actually.
Sit him down and be like, "you don't find it weird your dad just 'changed his mind?" and "Come on Leman, you know Magnus. He's arrogant as feth and he messes with things he can't control, but he'd never purposefully feth Emps over and killing him and his entire legion is an extreme response." I think there could be a pretty kick ass fan-fic involving Russ, who we know was rattled with grief over being sent to kill Magnus, maybe turning around and saying "this makes no sense." Maybe a fic where he breaks Magnus' back and has enough, and orders the Wolves to stop and begins looking around him to see what's really going on. Might not be super canon compliant, but I think it could make a good fic for one of the only characters the
HH series I think did well.
Horus told Leman Magnus was too dangerous to take to Terra alive. Aside from it being the word of The Warmaster and therefore the word of The Emperor there's actually no lie there, all Primarchs kind of fall into the category of too dangerous to bring before the Emperor alive.
Leman begged Magnus to surrender quietly and got nothing, no reply.
As much as he didn't want to kill Magnus before the assault on Prospero, Leman never had an issue during or after killing Magnus - Big red went all glowy opened the Warp and got sucked in just like a demon after all. Bad enough Russ thought he saw Thousand Sons consorting with Demons (it was actually the flesh change in that instance) Russ saw Magnus do what demons do.
Leman's grief came from knowing that it was all Horus manipulating them both, knowing that he could be so easily used and turned against his family put him in the gloomies.
