It's somewhat depressing that I can spend longer in the queue to get into a supermarket than it takes for me to contact a brewery and get beer dropped off at my door...

I'm lucky as Hoffbrau is attainable in the States and I can find it across the street at the liquor store.
Blue Moon never seems to be in danger of running out, so I don't have to really dip into other brands.
I'm an odd duck when it comes to beer. I bought a six pack of bottles once that lasted me a year and a half.

So, discovered Jack Daniels today.
Bought a 300cl bottle on a whim, and had it with Diet Coke.
It’s really rather nice! Oddly floral in taste.

I thought this was a beer thread.
I’ve only occasionally had Jack. Mostly stick to bourbons, with forays into rye whiskeys. Eclectic selection based mostly on whim at the store as to what’s on the shelf. Right now it’s Woodford Reserve. Last bottle was Sazerac.
I’m more fussy with my Gins.

Only other spirit type thing I’ve really drunk is the odd G&T (nothing poncey mind, just Gordons) and of course, Rum & Coke.
Mostly it’s because when it comes to a session, I know exactly what I’m doing on Beer. Spirits? Not so much. I’m either a happy or a maudlin drunk, so knowing my reactions is important.
If I find the maudlin coming out, I’ll bail or switch to soft drinks, saves harshing the mellow of others. Automatically Appended Next Post: Last time I bought Spirits was this bad boy.

We were running a Rogue Trader campaign ( FFG), and as part of shenanigans I (as the Rogue Trader) was hosting a dinner party. Felt a bottle of this somehow fitted (I mean, look at the name and description!).
We caned it. In one evening.

Malt Whisky, the more peaty the better is what I go for when budget allows
although my going out tipple tends more towards lager as it's a lot more affordable (and less likely to be replaced by a cheap n nasty blend in the less reputable places I used to drink in)

Lager gets a lot of stick from beer snobs, but it has its place. Bbqs, summer beer Gardens, evening session starters. I'd much rather have lager for those than an ale usually.

Doesn’t help that the most common Lagers really are pretty tasteless.
I mean, so far as I’m concerned the only discernible difference between Carling, Carlsberg, Fosters and Stella, is that Stella Is Not My Friend.
Since switching to beer and ales (what’s the difference? Dunno, don’t care!) I’ve gone more to the malty end rather than Hoppy end. Net result is that barring Red Stripe, Lager now tastes rather soapy to my palette.
Whisky? Never really tried it. As a tiny Grot, family visited a Distillery. Dad held me up to smell the Vat, and held me there (not deliberately) just a bit too long, and it put me off.
But, that was probably....erm....32 years ago, I’d reckon. Maybe a bit less.
Given I’ve found Jack Daniels quite nice, I may explore other such spirits. But, that’s a ‘wait for the pubs to reopen’ job. Would hate to spend money on a bottle in case I don’t like it.
And no. I will not call it JD. The reason being that I’ve now known three blokes who’s initials happened to be J.D., who insisted on being called JD - and all were “words I shouldn’t use on Dakka”.
Petty I know, and by all means no reason for anyone else to follow suit!

Most European lagers. Ever since I moved onto ales, big brand European lager just seems kind of pointless.
Which is not to say lager doesn't have it's place. I've mentioned Noble lager before, and I'll mention it again. Light in body, full in taste - it's a cracker.
When the mood is right, nothing hits the spot like a Mexican lager too. Light, crisp and cooling. I'll even put my hat in for the erzats "King of Beers" Budweiser. Pretentious snobs will knock it, but on a scorching hot afternoon you want something uncomplicated, bubbly and with a decent percentage, I'll quite happily take a Bud from you. Let's face it, you wouldn't be playing Roxeanne, Boom, Centurion, or anything else with a can of John Smiths. It would get messy pretty quickly.

Ugh. Well I probably couldn't do roxanne with water! In the Falklands I just had to hold the bottle to my mouth and pretend I was drinking. I just can't do it. Lightweight as I said ha. Luckily now I'm married I don't really go wild at beercalls anymore. They seem to be petering out somewhat too.

I highly recommend Guinness’ Hop House 13 lager; not too fizzy and very flavourful (almost fruity). I’m a big fan of real ales, but I actually prefer this to most IPAs if I want something refreshing (or I’m having a curry). Asahi is the other one I really like.

Three Day Weekend! Woooooo! Let’s drink responsibly!*
Four bottles of Cranborne Poacher, two of Blandford Fly, Jack Daniels, Jack Daniel’s Honey, and Southern Comfort. Plus mixers of course.
*remember. That’s anywhere between ‘show restraint’, ‘for heaven’s sake do not drink and drive you selfish sod’ and ‘try not to wake up Sunday evening, upside down in a tree unsure what year it is’.

Ahhh. Dark Star
Sadly, a brewery I have to be wary of.
I don’t know why, but whenever I’ve had some of their offerings, I’ve been quite, quite ill the same night.
Can’t remember if it’s a specific beer they do or not, but sadly not something I’m in a great rush to figure out! Automatically Appended Next Post: First sip of Tennessee Honey & Diet Coke.
Oh yes. That is nice. Very, very nice. Sweet, without being sickly (May head into sickly with Fat Coke).
And dammit, it reminds me of something my Granny used to bake, god rest her soul. Can I put my finger on it? Nope! This is going to frustrate me!

We had a week in Masham (pronounced "Massum") at Easter. It's famous for having two breweries - Theakstons and Black Sheep (founded by the rebel of the Theakston family).
The Black Sheep Brewery has a bar and restaurant (dog friendly), and we had a pie and a pint on... more than one occasion.
I'm a fan of Black Sheep ale anyway, but found a couple of new ones I like.
Riggwelter 5.9% ABV, dark and malty and rich. I think a couple of the supermarkets stock it.
Brave New World (can only be found at the brewery bar itself at the moment) is a golden ale. Can't remember the ABV, but it's light and fruity - tasty but malty rather than hoppy.
Saving Theakstons for the next visit!

Never had Southern Comfort.
There are only a few whiskey/bourbon cocktails I’ve had.
Mint Juleps - Traditional for the Kentucky Derby, where I grew up. Pretty vile. Those who like bourbon think there is too much other crap in them (they are right) and those who don’t think there is too much bourbon (they are also right) Their claim to fame is being cold, traditional, and readily available at events. I used to drink one every first Saturday in May to keep with my Kentucky roots. I stopped, and just drink straight bourbon these days on Derby Day. Would not recommend the julep.
Manhattans. Whiskey and sweet vermouth, garnished with cherries. Everyone has a drink they’ve had a Bad Experience with. This is mine. Tried keeping up with my father-in-law and his cousin. They were drinking these in glasses that you (and I at the time) would expect to be half full of some sort of mixer or a lot of ice. Nope.
Old Fashioneds. These I enjoy, and drink when I have the supplies in the house. Muddle a cherry and some orange with a sugar cube in the bottom of the glass, add bourbon, a few shots of bitters, ice. I skip the muddling and replace the sugar cube with a splash of maple syrup. You can omit the fruit, but I think that it takes away from the point. Might as well just drink it neat at that stage. But my brother was advocating maple old fashioneds for a while which are just bourbon, bitters, and maple syrup. Angostura bitters, FYI. I know there are a lot of different ones out there.

Think I’m definitely preferring Southern Comfort.
Jack Daniel’s & Coke is nice, don’t get me wrong. Tennessee Whiskey & Coke is also very nice. Nicer than its stablemate.
But Southern Comfort Just has that extra edge for me.

At first, I felt the recipe suffered. But over time, not so much.
Either I’ve tuned to the new taste (which is by no means bad), or the brewery has wised up and gone back to the original.
We’ll likely never know!
Didn’t Thatchers only buy the Cider side of things. Green goblin is theirs now I know that much. If I’m correct wychwood still brew the ales and Thatchers is only green goblin.
