oh yeah mass effect was great. I never managed to get full enjoyment from it though as my xbox with it in and it never worked afterwards even on a new console.

I'd have to choose a Voidhawk, from Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy. Quoth a wiki: voidhawks are sentient beings who are bonded to their captains at birth via affinity. Whilst growing up both voidhawk and captain can communicate with one another through affinity, and generally have a very loving and affectionate relationship.
