Fair point. It got my son & I started in 40k. 23 years later we're still both playing - and still using those figures.
Right there with you. I split two boxes in 3rd, and the marines make up 2 of the tactical squads of my battle company, and the speeders get a good deal of use. Well, more before 8th did bad things to their rules.
My son wasn’t born back then, but for him, DI is his entry into the hobby, so this box will probably always be special for him.

Being sad that it goes away depends on whether GW releases the components separately. There are minis in there that cannot be bought elsewhere, so removing them from the line would hamper Marine players somewhat, and DG players quite a bit.

I can’t speak for the DG side.
The unique models on the marine side are the gravis captain and the ancient. Maybe a LT. wargear option? And the captain in Know no Fear, which is not LCTB yet. So really just the ancient. And it looks like there is a new version in the new box, although he might get a new dataslate.

The Chosen, the Chaos Lord and the Cultist leaders and special weapons from Dark Vengeance were never released outside of Dark Vengeance. I assume the same applied to the Dark Angels models too...

DG would lose Noxius Blightbringer, Malignant Plague caster (does have a miniature in Space Marine heros though) and LoC with axe.
Pox walker would also get a lot more expensive when you have to get them in sets of 6 instead of getting 20 from DI.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

Yes I'm sad to see it go mostly for the reasons outlined by Jidmah. First due to Covid closing stores and now due to financial issues I could never pick up a copy. So getting my poxwalker numbers up as well as getting the special characters is going to be a lot more expensive now. Oh well who knows, maybe Plague Marines will actually be good in 9th and I wont need that many poxwalkers.

If you are close enough to the German border, you could just try getting the conquest magazine to get the stuff you are lacking. It's hard to get DG models cheaper than from the magazine.

you aren't the only one. While I typically like GW boxed sets, the Dark Imperium set really was a standout box set! It gave a great starting point for both sides of the box and was very playable right from opening it up and getting the models together.
It was a great box set, but I have a feeling this new one will be pretty legit too!

This page shows what will be coming: https://warhammer40000conquest.de/vorschau (warning: German site), every issue is 10€. Try finding a magazine store that runs it and have them order or reserve the issues you want. Just walking in and buying it doesn't work too well, as the tend to be gone unless you show up when the store opens. Most larger magazine stores do have it, some gas stations and convenient stores also run it, but many don't. You might have to check a couple of stores to find someone who can order them for you. I'm not sure whether you can just subscribe it and have delivered to the Netherlands, you'd get a bunch of terrain and a marine army that way as well.

I subscribed to WH Conquest and then canceled my subscription after the first 4 issues, as I had no interest in the whole collection. But then I've used my account to buy the few individual issues that I wanted.

That sounds interesting, can you explain in detail how that works?

In Italy it is distributed by Hachette. I subscribed to the WH Conquest collection on their website and then I've cancelled it after the first shipment (they send 4 issues at a time, monthly).
Using the same account on the Hachette website, you're able to order individual past issues on their website, provided that they are still available. Same cost (€9,99 per issue) plus something like €7 for shipping.
There's a cap on the number of identical individual issues you can order but I never hit it (probably max 8 per customer?).

Thanks. I'll check with people I know who still have their subscription if it works the same in Germany. I still hope to get more of the DG characters for 10€ and maybe a pair for Felthius' Cohort for cheap blightlords.

Only because they never put out the Gravis Captain and Ancient as stand alone releases. Going to need to get my hands on them somehow before they become expensive to find.

I've seen a few starter boxes in my time with the hobby as well. Overall I'd rank Dark Imperium as 4/5.
The miniatures are nicely detailed and totally on par with the look of multipart plastic kits. This alone is a significant level up from older starters, where all you had were monopose fuglies that never looked as good as "proper" models.
The rulebook that comes with it is a Hardback, not the paperback variety like in the older starters. Keeps it in much better shape overall, and endures abuse, wear and tear much better.
Why then the score of 4/5? Two things that I dislike.
1) The builds are a PITA if you want to do weapon swaps or add chapter specific shoulderpad upgrades. The amount of work reauired to pull off decent looking stalker bolt rifles and chapter badged shoulderpads makes me cringe
2) While the hardback rulebook is aight, I would have preferred a digital copy of the rulebook instead. GW coulda made two starter boxes, one with the physical rulebook and one with a DL code for the digital rulebook
