Ok, now THAT is a motion I can get behind.
It's not unprecedented, we still have a current Sorcerer model on a Disc of Tzeentch, after all.

I'm thinking about building 2 the new bike chaplains and using one as the basis for a Salamanders Chaplain on a Salamander(magmadroth). So I'm totally down with beasts.

It could work out well.
I have seen a really nice NDK Grand Master based of an AoS stormcast dragon resculpted to be mechanical and with a GM riding it, looked really awesome and the dude put a lot of work in to it. Resculpted the head to be an eagle one not a dragon, made the armour and wings look mechanical, had magnetized options for both the GM and the shoty weapons for the dragon.

I wish I saved the picture

I think it could work well with marine being consolidated into one book. If you are a space wolve, you have fenrisian wolves and thunder wolves. If you are a salamander you have fire drakes and thunder drakes cavalery. Etc. All under a generic datasheet.

Yeah, this would be my preferred approach. As for people who hate the idea, having an option doesn't mean you have to use it; my marines did never have centurions as I thought the looked stupid, I didn't resent the option existing for other people to use though. I probably wouldn't give my marines any monster mounts, but some hunting dogs/beasts would probably fit their style.

I'd be more inclined to use the sigmarine dracoline models as a base. They're a bit more imposing than the hippogryphs, and they have plenty of choice.

I was only saying for a "Howling Griffons" conversion opportunity. The dracoline is a much nicer looking variant.

Besides the skullcrushers, we should also have Plague Marines on rot flies for DG, and Noise Marines on Slaanesh steeds for EC.

it would go without saying.

Why wouldnt the cult marines ride the beasts of their patrons?

this is just one more thing that takes distinctiveness away from non marine armies.

there's an entire eldar army riding dinosaurs they've never produced, but how is that going to compete when gw release 'space marines: dinoriders'...

I have never bought the thunderwolf cavalry for my wolves because i think it's a bit dumb. pet wolves made more sense and had been in the fluff since the earliest miniatures.

im sure a counts as space wolf army with lizards or something would be a fine thing, but I dont really want to see it added to the marine list in an official capacity.

How is it taking the ''distinctiveness away from non marine armies''?

I'd love to see an Exodites faction, but I fail to see how that would be the same as a SM unit riding fire salamanders...

They used to - old models - however given new GW - good chance they might come back

More cavalry would be fun - get them Cyboars back, the Exodite riders, etc etc

Because when you support one faction over the others you make it an easy pick.

If you then take things that other factions have that might attract players to them and apply them to this heavily supported popular faction, then you remove one more thing that will keep people in that faction. Why bother with a hard to play elf army when you can get a similar army with out the downsides of not being marines?

A simple thought experiment would be to take the current craftworld and marine codexes and swap their support and unit choices - ie, give Eldar 100+ units all in plastic, give them dozens of sweet character. Models you can use or kitbash, give them unique sub faction rules and continual unit updates. Give them the advantages of other armies (like whole squads of plasma gunners that are superior to everyone else).

And then restrict the marine army to the few dozen units it has had for 30 years, most in resin and a couple of new ones added 10 years ago. Distinguish all the chapters with one universal army rule and call it a day.

It is very obvious which army looks more attractive, we are just so used to it being that way that we don't notice.

As others have mentioned, I think CSM (esp. their old lord options) should see beasts well before any Marine option.

On Marines, I could 100% get behind something like a sidekick/familiar/pet catch-all category to encompass some fun conversion options (except GW in the current era wants a strictly representation model of just about everything, these days), like we've seen in numerous iterations of CSM from statted models to equipment that's represented separately.

I don't think anything like mounts (representable by bikes if you really need to) or hunting packs (SW are pretty unique) are interesting.

Before we give space marines more monsters, let’s make sure their apothecaries can heal the one they already have. In every book he’s in, G-man has to get saved from the brink of death by apothecaries, but on every tabletop he’s on apothecaries can’t heal the dude.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Apparently they are relaxing that rule now:

"Not only are these useful in the game, but they also provide some fantastic modelling opportunities. Maybe Elucia Vhane would make an excellent base for a Ulanti Courtier, and how about using a Drukhari Reaver helmet for your Mirror Mask?"
I donn't think there will be any official model for the Ulanti Courtier or the Mirror Mask.
