So based on the poll and the responses, the Indomitus box set was a success. As a follow up question, if you were one of the people that prior to the launch thought they wouldn’t get one because of scalpers/availability, does this give you more faith in future big box releases by GW?

Currently, I have little faith in GW ability to make available anything remotely popular without taking FOMO like actions (which I'm not going to). When the Assault Intercessors and Gladiator pre-order happened I went into my FLGS a few days after the pre-order was made available. I figured the Christmas bundles were all taken. Which they were. However, I was surprised that I couldn't pre-order the Intercessors or the Gladiator as all the allocations for that has also had dibbs called before for I made my order. Plenty of Blood Angel supplements though.

Apparently Primaris space marines are the hot new faction in my area (along with Necrons which I think is more understandable). It is still weird to me as prior to 2020 I only knew of a few players that even had Primaris space marines in their marine armies. I guess the Blade Guard won over a lot of people. I don't expect I will be able to pre-order the Heavy Intercessors or Eradicators when they happen. Probably not anything Primaris until the pandemic lets up. So I am working on my other armies in the meanwhile.

On the other hand, I think if I wanted that Sisters of Battle vs. Dark Eldar box, I don't think I would have any issue pre-ordering it. Same for the new Lumineth Realm Lords stuff which I probably will pre-order.

Thing is the Gladiator is likely going to be on the shelf for what 5-10 years from now. Assuming GW remains functional the Gladiator will be sold long term. So it doesn't matter as much if its not on sale on launch day in enough volume to meet demand. GW is able to leave that money on the table. Plus its not as if they have a choice with their main factory understaffed and unable to produce at normal rates.

That element is something we just have to get used to during Corona and until such time as GW can operate their factory as normal for several months (longer for overseas)

I know. If my post comes off a bit lamenting or annoyed, it wasn't my intention. My store offers pre-order discounts which make it attractive to take part. I completely understand the whys and hows. I am not really missing out on anything as you're correct. They are going to be available for a good long while, just not as much at the moment. Which has me causes me to have little faith I can procure popular stuff at launch.

Which is also fine. I didn't pick up the latest C:SM. Because I am annoyed that I got less than ten games with codex prior to that.

At one point I was able to easily get a copy, but it just wasn't my cup of tea at the time.

(raises hand) Guilty. 1st, I have plenty of Marines. I don't need any more. And until the Indom box the only Primaris I owned was a single Hellblaster painted up & sitting on my monitor. But damn, I like virtually all of the Primaris sculpts in this box (I could take or leave the assault primaris guys).
And I loved all the Necron stuff.
I needed the rule book anyways....

So a box where I like every model, a rulebook, and at a decent savings + local discount? Why yes, I will take one.
And now I'm like so many others & have a small Primaris force I need to pick a color scheme for.

My local store still has four in stock.

I picked up the marine half of one back. Then bought the bikes, eliminators, and two characters out of another.

Good to hear. I have no issues with others starting a Primaris or composite Firstborn/Primaris force. I mean really like 'em so of course I like others like 'em too. It just caught me off guard. Fortunately the players I talk to tend not to be the type to jump on the new hotness. So it didn't surprise me when the second 8th edition C:SM came out and there were no new space marine players or those talking about playing space marines. I just got some side glances from the players that like more optimized army lists when they asked which supplement I was using and told them my space marine chapter is unknown, so I don't use one at all.

Jump to Indomitus, and I have talked to about half-a-dozen players locally excited to start a space marine army with it. I don't know it how much was the lower cost of the box and how much it was the marine sculpts themselves. Clearly, there was something that was there that the previous Primaris models just didn't have that drew them in. So when things in my area start to open up again, I will be interested to see the results of these players' hobby efforts in person. There should be a Raptors chapter (possibly two), at least one Imperial Fist, a Black Templar, a Dark Angels and possibly a Blood Angels army showing up. I hope to have my Genestealer Cult already to go for all that. Yes, I know exactly what I am in for. Primaris are probably what I know the best in 40k since I got into them when they were, let's say, just okay in terms of power.

No. Because indominatus is rare case(is there even 2nd?) of GW doing MORE of limited print run box. Other boxes that were intended to be only X prints and that's out sold out immediately(like indominatus did). Difference here is GW did made to order print run. That's not normal for discount boxes. Top of my head indominatus is only one that I can remember. Anybody remember another discount box that got MTO when initial print run sold out?

As is indominatus sold out rather fast originally. If it wasn't for MTO it would have been far less available.

I was a bit put off by the price but decided late in the day to try and preorder them, by this time both of my usual webstores of choice (those with 20% discount) had allocated all their stock, not really sure how this happens before they're even on preorder but hey ho.
So I tried on launch day to purchase from GW direct but their website crashed before I could order. Managed to find a couple of other online sellers but paid rrp, so got two boxes but with a bit of hassle due in part to my own fault. I will admit they're good value even at rrp however.
Oh and I plan to keep all the models, swapped the second rulebook for something from another game system though.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

That kind of a depends. Dark Imperium and Know no fear were great sets, and stores here got them, and they were sold through out all 8th ed. Indomitus seems to have been overstocked in US/UK, and not overstocked in other places around the world.

I wouldn't say it was overstocked. Overstocked means you've got stuff that doesn't/won't sell. Everyone seems to have sold out of the launch box.
My one local store that still had them in Nov? I'm pretty sure that's because A) they ordered plenty/as many as allowed, B) don't do online/Ebay/etc, & C) were closed due to the pandemic for most of the summer & even into the fall. They sold them sometime prior to mid-December.

Perhaps other places could best be described as having been under-stocked.

well I don't have an english word for it. No idea how to describe a situation when in some parts of the world stores can't order 10 boxs, because GW tells them there are no to other. While other stores in different countries have 50 box left over. Problem here wasn't that the box got bought out by lets say scalpers, like it is often the case with limited edition models, but that stores had problems with ordering the boxs. Which again is strange hearing stores how their stores have 20 boxs just laying around.

GW just didn't 100% accurately predict sales / demand in each country. That's all there is to it I think. Considering their previous CEO said that market research was pointless in a niche market like theirs, they probably still have a lot of catching up to do on that front.

I think its also that GW just split stock between retail, 3rd party and online as normal and it hit the barrier that small stores wanted lots to overcome shortfalls of sales so were ordering insane numbers; meanwhile vast portions of the market went online instead of going on the highstreet. So in many ways it wasn't so much a lack of stock but a lack of effective distribution brought about more by the pandemic on a global scale. All sparked by the fact that stuff went out of stock very fast online which prompted complaints and such even though there was still stock in the system itself.

Here our GW and FLGS sold out pre-orders basically immediately, and it was only due to the Made-To-Order that I managed to get one.
Though holy gak that Made-To-Order was a damned long wait, with mine taking 150 days from ordering (the original email promised they would take "up to 120 days").

Really didn’t see any issues in my area with picking up a copy.
Me and a friend split 2 between us for back burner projects later on down the line.
Always nice to have something sat there for when you need a change.

Aye some of the day's outrage was because the online stock sold out in seconds. Which was only in part due to scalpers; a greater part is because of corona and everyone being online all at the same time for launch. GW has regular launch times so everyone knows when stuff goes on sale fresh on a saturday and for a big release there was a lot of marketing about it.

That was my experience. I wanted 2 boxes and was going to order online from a local store, which is also a major online discount retailer. The website crashed the instant pre-orders opened and it stayed down. I began trying other online retailers only to find they had also crashed or sold out. Then I found out by facebook that the original store I was going to order from was taking expressions of interest via email and would allocate stock on a first come first served basis so I contacted them. Fearing I wasn't going to be successful I then phoned my local independent store. It does have a web store but is primarily a bricks and mortar store. They had plenty still in stock and I was able to secure my copies.

Much later in the day I found out I'd been successful in securing stock with the first store as well so I let them know I'd found it elsewhere and they could allocate my stock to someone else. They later got in a second wave of stock and GW also did their made to order thing so I think everyone who wanted one should have been able to get one eventually.
