Reading between the lines, it sounds like you want to collect Tau. Don't let the rules as they are stop you; these things come in cycles, and you likely don't know what playstyle you prefer yet. I bet in the new codex they get some alien allies as well, for more painting fun. Seriously, just go for something you love the lore, minis and feel of. Everything else is secondary.

You're probably right! I am going to wait on the new T'au codex and see, but that new railgun sure does look intense!

I picked up some Sisters today and will head down that rabbit hole for now. Had some store credit at my LGS and figured why not! Also had a box of 'practice' Sisters in my closet. To me, they will satisfy the Space Marine painting I enjoy but also give me something new (and way less spiky than Death Guard!) The religious imagery was a big plus and after getting some better heads off Etsy I was pretty much sold.

Here we go!

BTW.. Really enjoyed reading all of these responses - Feel free to keep 'em coming, super interesting!

Sisters are such an amazing faction! Not only are the models amazing, they are a blast to play against, and incredibly strong. They are definitely my next army.

My first faction (40k, I already had a Brettonia army for Fantasy at this time) was easy. I Started Black Templars in 3rd edition with the starter box. I then started Orks. Then I built a Tyranid army. Then I built a smurf army with all the extra models I had from Boxed sets (if it doesn'tfit my Templars army, it gets a blue coat of paint). Then I did the same with Necrons, as I had two Indomitus boxes.

For Xmas, my wife bought me a sizable army of Admech that im currently building.

So what im trying to say is, it doesn't matter what you start with, you'll always be planning your next army. I think I have 23 armies across 6 games (though many are boxed up and put away) yhat I've collected over the last 28 years.

We don't call it plastic crack for nothing.

Use Sisters and just don't use any unhelmeted heads. Problem solved.

This is the way.

I wish my partner felt the same way about it, but they don't like the helmets... so somebody else is stuck painting faces.

If I had to choose only one faction it would be Tyranids.

When I was a child I hated losing games and it was only when I began admiring the monsters in many fantasy, science fiction and horror films did I find a way of working around that. If the monsterous aliens won then that means the opposition would be eaten alive and thus they must be stopped at all costs! If I won then the game would suffer the bad ending where any hope for escape was cruely snuffed out! I felt bad about winning, so thats why I picked'em...

Tyranids also presented ideal game-controlled characters for solo / coop games. If you watch ALIENS, THEM! or Starship Troopers then the monsters aren't backing down until they've chewed you to pieces, or you've turned them into a prize-winning swiss cheese. Recreating the last stand at Fort Whiskey is damn good fun, with hordes of termies and genies against Dark Reapers...ah! The good ol' days!

The kits are also pretty good for saving money, as the Warriors and Swarmlord kits only have a few pieces missing from making second models such as the Prime or Hive Tyrant. Basic greenstuff skills and left over pieces from other kits will make for interesting conversions, such as a snake body for the Prime.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Yes.. it's yet another one of THOSE threads. My apologies in advance.

I'd like to do Space Marines, but I'm afraid they're a little too vanilla.
I'd like to do Space Wolves, but a lot of the models look so dated.
I'd like to do Sisters of Battle, but those danged head molds are a bit offputting.
I'd like to do T'au, but all I've heard is that they're too one sided.
I've also considered Deathwatch, Orks and a couple of others...

I really enjoy painting, so I'd like to find a faction that's fun to paint (NOT Death Guard for me), but also something that is fun (and easy for a beginner) to play. For instance, T'au.. I've heard they are shooty glass cannons with no melee, but they look so cool and I grew up on Gundam, so there's that.

My question for you, and the larger reason why this thread was started, is why did YOU pick your main faction?

Thank you for taking the time to read this redundant thread. Any advice or constructive criticism would be much appreciated.

I started about 25 years ago. There were four of us and everyone wanted to be Space Marines. and there were four chapters. So we all picked one, and I picked last - ergo I got Ultramarines who were the lowest of the four at that point. Since then I've started other armies usualy because they were the other half of a new edition boxed set that gave me new sculpts and/or new units and a new rule book. Sometimes one of my armies has been top dog, sometimes they've been... less so. Whatever army you pick will be at the mercy of the edition flavor of the month. Tau may not have close combat but I suspect they get a post shooting phase movement opportunity to parallel pile in consolidation on objectives. Pick the one you like. Then pick the one you like second most when your favorites are on a downswing during edition changes. Hope they don't both end up on the same downswing.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

My main army is Ultramarines, I picked them cause they're blue.....

They also like to have everything neat and organized which is also *mmmwah* chefs kiss

Like there was a time that I wanted to repaint and do DA, only to realize they don't have things too organized. Like their sgts don't even have red helmets! So if I got a Sgt with just a Boltgun he's gonna look like everyone else. So no, being able to spot him in a crowd is nice lol
