Basic zombies should be background elements in Resident Devil.

The actual focus has to be in Umbrella being Umbrella, and in the more fun monsters (Lickers, Tyrants, giant monsters, etc.)

Yep - agreed Zombies are not the real threat....I did like the way Z Nation went more towards this sort of thing....

Are you sure you're familiar with Resident Evil??

Zombies have always been just the tip of the iceberg, the most banal level of threat associated with the *-viruses. RE7 and RE8 did not even feature zombies; neither did RE4 or RE5, really. Resident Evil isn’t actually about zombies, beyond an EXTREMELY superficial level.

Yeah, this seems to be one of the major themes of the show. Jade is the protagonist and she seems to be motivated by noble aspirations ... but is that really the case? Many other characters call her on this, not least of all Billie.

The thing is, and the games do this, you cannot just throw big monsters at people the entire time. They lose their impact when they lose over and over again. It's called villain decay. Lickers are awesome. The first licker is terrifying. The 30th licker is a chore. And thats when you are playing. If you are WATCHING the effects of villain decay happen faster. You need the Zombies to fill the space between. To present a threat of numbers so that when a Licker does show up it has impact and meaning.

Nemesis escapes this for the most part because you don't beat him. You survive him. All the way up until you beat him like 6 times in a row.

Mr. X. manages to be a massive drain on your limited resources. But in a show, I am not counting the on screen actors bullets (and neither are they). So if every episode I saw another Mr X it would get dull fast.

The Zombies SHOULD be everywhere and they SHOULD be a threat. Not individually, together.

Lickers are not defeated (on screen) in this show btw — they kill almost everyone and all our characters can do is run for their lives ... into another threat. Now, that one is defeated but it’s also a one-off.

In fact, Jade is never shown as a particular badass character. Sure she is physically fit, knows how to use a gun and can deal with a few zombies, but a horde can easily overwhelm her so she spends most of the future part of the story running for her life.

Hordes never stop being a threat, which is actually a big plot point.

Finished it last night.

OK, it did slightly pick up a bit towards the end. The dialogue remains dire in parts, and a fair few really dumb moments.

I could see what they were aiming for, just feel that it was beyond the grasp of the crew... other than the brilliant Lance Reddick, who does a lot of carrying in every scene he is in.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

The show was teeeeeerrible... I had no expectations for this or anything. But my god was it terrible.

Spoiler:
The pacing sucked.. the main character sucked... the acting and writing was god awful (apart from Bert). Only reason I watched it was because there was literally nothing else to do in this heat and I get to leech off my sisters Netflix since she visited.

I wanted it to be dark and it just wasn't. Felt like was watching a low budget teen drama with no stakes or coherent plot. My fiancé asked me at one point what the F&*^k are we watching... and she watches some terrible crap

I think it’s fair game to talk about, a lot of people online are making that criticism. Personally, I don’t see how the show is at all woke. Sure, women and non-white actors are cast in lead roles and a prominent character is gay but at the same time all of these characters are portrayed quite negatively, most especially the gay character.

Accusations of being woke are one of the main criticisms I have seen and the other one is that the show prominently features teenage drama.

The big problem of discussing wokeness is that it has never been clarified what does it even mean. Is having women and non-white actors woke? Does that mean Alien is woke? Are all of the Will Smith movies woke?

I mean, Arcane fits the bill for all these claims of wokeness by having a lot of female leads and even heavily implying a romance between two of them. Yet I don't think I have seen anyone call it woke which lets me to believe woke only means "I didn't like it and I refuse to explain why".

Care to give any examples? That word gets thrown around so much I'm not even sure what it means any more, other than "thing I don't approve of". Does the mere presence of gay, black or female characters constitute woke now?

My major problem with the show before I stopped watching wasn't around any messaging it was trying to send. I didn't detect any real message or theme, woke or otherwise, from the clunky, clumsy script. I'm not sure it's well written enough to successfully communicate a message in the first place.

I’d say the theme of the show is dealing with the gap between what people intend / want and the actual consequences of their actions, especially in light of how our motives are not always clear even to ourselves. The series frequently depicts characters overestimating their capacity to see the truth and make a difference, whether for good or ill. For example, one of the most willful and confident characters ends up as a literal puppet.

Cutting back and forth between 2022 and 2036 allows the audience to continuously evaluate and reevaluate Jade at two different points in her life: as a teenager who thinks she knows it all and as an adult woman who has been through a lot of stuff. The assumption at the outset would be that adult Jade has matured with experience and perspective, becoming more humble and maybe even noble. But as we watch, comparing the teenager to the adult scene-by-scene, we start to wonder if she grew up or if time just passed.

There is also the more abstract version of this theme, too, as related to the company. This Umbrella is morally ambiguous relative to its straightforwardly evil previous incarnation. This Umbrella is actually attempting to align its ruthless profit motive with the mitigation of human suffering. To the teenagers of 2022, for whom good and bad are just emotions, this nuance is at best vanishingly relevant. But the weary, morally-compromised adults of 2022 spend a lot of time arguing about it. Are they just kidding themselves?

One of the best scenes in the entire show, for me, was when the girls find out that
Spoiler:
their dad needs to inject himself with their blood to survive
and assume this means that he doesn’t love them — and another character questions this “logic” of theirs. “So what?” he asks. He goes on to call into question the ideals against which we judge reality as flawed. The show seems to ask whether mortals get to trade in ideals.

It's really hard to watch a show where the main protagonists are so annoying and unlikeable. Baxter even with his daft solo massacre of the zombies was infinitently more likeable and capable than Jade who is woefully illogical for a 'scientist'. Billie Eilish is also terrible.

The best characters are the journalist, Wesker senior (though he has his moments) and that is about it.

To be fair to Baxter his solo massacre explained why someone who looks more likely to be having an operation is actually an operative. And when someone is doing the improbable with often confused and suddenly less dangerous creatures around you, guys with guns who only feel confident shooting within arms reach, and copious amounts of hidden magazines, doing it in the hammed up style you would expect from toast of London is I think spot on.

I rationalise away bad scientists in these settings as organisations having to work with what they have got. The really smart ones you wouldn't send to do bizarrely ill planned field observations, that is a job for the annoying intern.

Baxter was also good fun

@ Manchu - yeah that scene was a cool moment

Jade is similar to Burnham from Discovery - except people die constantly from her rashness and stupidity and actually call her out on it rather than it always working and being loved by everyone.

This post contains spoilers but not sure if they should be spoiler'ed as the show's been out for months and the intent of this post is to discuss some of the deep-dive lore which necessitates spoilers for the video games plots and the series plot.

I posted this reply elsewhere regarding the RE series:

Netflix's Resident Evil:
1. Canonically perfect to the video games, taking place directly after RE8 and directly referencing RE0, 1, 2, 3, 5 and relying on events that occurred in 6, 7/8
2. Has slightly less of a ridiculous plot than most of the RE games
3. Has characters that are written and portrayed better than most of the RE games
Basically, it is a perfect companion TV series for the hardcore fans of the story of the video games.
The problem is the video games are all ... well, not particularly well written, and any average person would have no idea what in the world is going on.
The series developers smartly chose to separate the series from the "main" video game storylines so as to not step on the reverential stories of Chris, Jill, Claire, Leon, etc. In this aspect, the Netflix Resident Evil series is more akin to the Resident Evil Revelations video games (and should probably have been titled as such, to indicate it being a side-story to the mainline RE plot). However, I think that actually backfired, because when it comes down to it, very few RE fans actually care about the crazy convoluted background of RE and just want to see Leon S Kennedy shooting monsters in the face. For people like me, however, it's pretty great to see Wesker's clones and the resurgence of one of the original Umbrella Corporation holdings (helmed by James Marcus' daughter, no less!) after the corporation was broken up by the US Government.
It's a real bummer it was canceled, as I could easily see a second season involving the the BSAA, Blue Umbrella, and Chris Redfield (hell, the Hound Wolf Squad could have shown up to investigate the Marcus Red Umbrella disaster)

and it got me thinking purely in terms of the canon timeline - NOT about the quality of the writing or acting, which obviously has people either loving it or hating it; I'm more interested in the very high level of faithfulness the series has to the video games. Has anyone done a deep dive into the background placement of the RE series into the RE video game timelines? There are obvious references and call outs specifically to RE1 and the Spencer Mansion and RE0 and the progenitor virus (which became the T-virus), James Marcus, RE2/3 and William Birkin and Raccoon City's destruction and cover up (and by extension RE6), Wesker (and RE5), but for me one of the fascinating events of the video games, which is the US government's involvement in and breakup of Umbrella Corporation and the restructuring or elimination of it's various entities, is what this series smartly used: as the Marcus controlled "red" Umbrella operating outside of the USA as a pharmaceuticals only company, versus, say, the "blue" Umbrella Arsenal that was formed from Umbrella USA's holdings. It's obvious the creators tried their damndest to finesse the background of the show from the RE video games and I'm really interested to see if anyone has attempted a reconstruction of the show's background beyond the numerous in-show references.
