Not exactly rocket science.

Almost certainly the former.

Remember, you don’t just need to allow for free movement for crew, but also materials. The ship designs of 40K as based on existing STCs. Whilst there will be some sections not comfortable for Astartes or Primarchs? The bits they need to get to already has vaulted ceilings etc.

Why is it in the HH books have decided to be better, a character has to be bigger??? 10 foot tall isn’t cool, or impressive it’s laughable.

It’s fine for polar bears, (some of my best friends are polar bears!) but if I saw a polar bear working in an office on maccrage or trying to ride a horse it would look very silly, regardless of whether or not it would eat me.

Also primarchs are practical and not above crawling or rolling through corridors with lower ceilings (whichever is faster).

On a serious note, I vaguely remember they were marine-ish in size until gw dropped that gigantic guilliman. Or was it forgeworld's doing with the horus heresy primarchs?

Remember that the Primarchs are all latent psykers. Much like the Emperor could alter his appearance the Primarchs probably could too. Its probably not even a conscious choice, just more of something that happens based on their mental situation.

The Primarchs grew up among normal humans of their homeworlds, so they would have subconsciously been more akin to humans in size. But as time went on and they matured, and came back into the fold and hung out with their genesons, they could have grown to match their new station till they are the 10-12ft walking demi-gods others, and themselves, believe them to be.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Primarchs weren't made for either of those things though. They were made to kill greater daemons, avatars of khaine, and ork warbosses in martial combat and to be such larger than life figures that they instantly command the attention of a Legion of seven to eight foot tall super soldiers. Both things that being huge help with.

7 foot tall super soldiers, according to the designer of them. They may not have been made to ride horses or work in offices but they did, and those are the stories we have of them. Being ten foot tall is not a benefit for a solider. It s hindrance, especially in a world where it is all made for 6-7 foot tall people. And to go back to earlier point, these characters existing and interacting with the normal world as they do looks bloody silly when they are ten foot tall. Beyond that, there’s no need for the, to look so stupid either. They can be impressive super duper soldiers simply being the same size as others soldiers just more awesomerer. In fact that’s exactly how they started out. Making them massive freaks that would struggle to find a toilet to crap in just makes them characters of ridicule.

Overall, we should keep in mind that models aren’t not necessarily To Scale.

A larger than usual character model does not mean the character is larger than usual.

They’re army centrepieces, intended to look impressive. Not just for painters of all levels, but to be a, well again I think I’m over egging it, “visual threat” from across the board. Simply put, it a given model is meant to be powerful, it should look powerful.

Consider the original Leman Russ model.

Now do keep in mind that it’s from a time before Primarchs were Primarchs as we know them today. But strictly speaking? Being a Citadel Model it is a valid Leman Russ model. Just a sodding tiny one.

And so Guilliman and The Lion as playing pieces are quite possibly very deliberately Larger Than Life. This also extends to the Forgeworld Primarchs, though their size difference is less pronounced.

I'm pretty sure the Primarch embiggening is one of the many sins of the Horus Heresy book series, and Forge World merely followed this new canon when they created the HH Primarch models. GW completed the trend with plastic 40k Guilliman.

So giant Primarchs is in the lore as much as the models, if not moreso. Blame Black Library
